5 star prices but 1 star service. Tons of issues with the service of the staff in this hotel. Not all, but many are rude, have no issue just hanging up the phone on you when you are making a reseanable request in a pleasant tone. It seem they fee we are there to please the staff, and not the other way around. Where to start? Here are just 4 grips of many: 1) When I checked into my room, I noticed that the door would not lock when I left the room. I essentially had to leave my door unsecured/unlocked whenever I left the room. After 5 requests and 3 days the hotel maintenance staff finally showed up to fix the door. Incredible. 2) The hotel insists you use their Lopesan App for almost everything including making restaurant reservations. Problem is that the app often would not work even with in great wifi coverage. I would often get a "Quota exceeded" message after trying multiple times to use their app, indicating that the hotel app does not have enough capacity of the guests at the hotel. When I called the front desk to see, if as a courtesy, they could book a restaurant reservation for my wife and I over the phone I was told No! I explained my issues with their app, and that it was not a question that I did not want to use the app for reservations, but the app was not working. No matter. No they would not help me over the phone. Really? This is the service you get for $550/night from a so-called 5 star hotel? 3) On the day of my check out I walked to the front desk and asked if, in consideration of all the issues I had could they have the courtesy of providing me with a late check out. Of course they said no! unless I paid an extra $25/hour. I reminding the person on the front desk of all the problems I have had with my stay and If as a courtesy could they extend me just 1 or 2 extra hours, something that would cost them absolutely zero $ yet would be a gesture of good service. Nope! Not interested in helping. 4) Checkout was at noon. As I had witnessed so much bad service already I did not want to bad experience checking out. At 11:15AM I asked for help bring down my large bags. 40 minutes later, not one had showed up! Not wanting to be charged for a late checkout due to their staff not coming to bring down my bags, I walked down to the lobby to checkout minutes before noon. Of course the front desk continued their bad service by telling I could not check out because my bags where still in the room. I asked if this was not a catch 22 as I call form help with my bags 45 minutes prior to check out time. It took another 45 minutes (total of 1.5 hours) for my bags to finally come down, and I had to plead with the front desk to not charge me with a late checkout. Never ever coming back to this place.
This resort sets the bar for everything in a vacation.

My wife and I arrived at the resort around 3 pm. This was supposed to be check in time. There were issues with the Unique staff member locating our Unique room despite the fact we booked over 8 months prior and had everything confirmed. About 4:30 we finally got our room assigned to us and were issued with wrist band id's which had encoded information to access our room. No key card to carry around. We were introduced to our butler, Ramon. His English was excellent and provided us with information as we made our way to our room. He was able to book us the ala carte restaurants we wanted to attend without difficulty. He was also able to obtain a bottle, although small, of rum which was once provided by the resort to Unique guests but has since stopped. Massages were also once offered but no longer. Instead now you get to sit in the hot tub in the spa for 45 minutes, big deal. Another perk to Unique guests of having a lobster dinner at several restaurants has also stopped. Even Unique guests now have to pay an additional $60 dollars US. The Unique bar/buffet restaurant is the only location to obtain lobster and is not served every day. Something to look for. The Unique room is the same as the rooms in the adults only section. A very comfortable king size bed with great pillows. Our fridge had an assortment of pop and water and beers. There are no liquor dispensers in any rooms. There are also no tubs in the rooms, so if you were looking to have a soak at days end you are out of luck. The shower is very large with a generous rain shower head but does not have a great deal of water pressure. The wall mounted shower wand is a better option. The balconeys are a nice size with a couch and pillows. There is also an expanding drying rack for wet swim gear at the end of the day. The air conditioning worked great and there was no musty smell in the room. The colours and decor were somewhat modern and did not appear dated. A huge hanging closet and ample drawers allow for storing clothes. The room was kept super clean each day with service being completed around 4 each day. The room included small amenities such as a comb, razor and soap, toothbrush, soap and lotion. The beach was kept spotless by staff who must have been up early or stayed up late to keep any seaweed off the beach. The beach areas immediately next to Lopesan property was heavy with seaweed. Walks on the beach proved that without proper attention to this issue it can become very unpleasant, both to walk through to get into the water and the smell from it baking in the sun. There were ample loungers under shade in the Unique, adults only, and general section. Even later into the day there was never an issue getting loungers front row. One huge negative about being at the beach was that there were many tour boats at anchor just outside the swim area buoys. That in itself was not the issue, the issue is these boats blast music towards the beach. It isn't the relaxing salsa kind either. It is the high tempo upbeat nasty club type music that you only want to hear in the club at 3am. Bring ear buds for sure to drown that out. The sand is fine and soft under foot. On occasion vendors would approach you as you walked from your lounger to the water but once you said no thank you they left you alone. Security guards made it quit clear to vendors to not bother the guests. The infinity pool was massive and early enough was calm, however as the day went on the children would become ever more present in body and noise. Also on occasion was the ever popular foam party. If you like that sort of thing. Staff are amazing at keeping you hydrated while at the beach. Pop, water, cocktails are only minutes apart. The bars all offer amazing service and top notch drinks. But a special shout out to Domingo at La Perla adults only pool bar. He put effort into his drinks and service and always with a smile. This adults only pool was never busy. Never. Early day, late afternoon. The most people ever was 8. Shhhh, keep this a secret. Every ala carte restaurant was authentic in style, flavor, and decor. Wait staff at every one went out of their way to always make sure you never had to ask for anything. The french restaurant, despite the AC not working when we were there had great food. Dont let the small looking portions fool you. The size was perfect. The steakhouse was also well done, as was the Mexican. And the chocolate bomb dessert is a must ! The Italian restaurant had larger portion sizes but again with fresh cooked items and pasta cooked perfectly. The caesar salad was life changing. The drop in restaurants Valley and Yolo had traditional fare but with larger portions, be warned. The phily cheese steak was OMG ! melted in your mouth. The buffet Atlantico was sprawling with selection of everything. No, really, everything. Service again was top notch. Never waiting to be seated and always having your requirements met. As soon as you turn to look to your waiter or waitress to ask for more coffee, or ketchup they are right there. If a supervisor in a green shirt sees you looking they are jumping up to assist. The team effort here really shows. The Bavaro coffee shop was like a starbucks level of quality drinks but without the pretentious baristas with a nose lip pierce combo whining when you don't tip on a 2 dollar drink. The casino on the boulevard was just in spirit only. Its darker with flashing slot machine lights and only a handful of those. If they work you got lucky. The 2 black jack tables are either $20 or $30 dollars per hand. What ? James Bond isn't coming here in a tux, nor is anyone else. People showing up in cargo shorts and a Metallica t shirt are not dropping 30 bucks per hand. Know your clients Lopesan. And I get that a white party is a thing...but is it ? The Unique upgrade allows you access to a special section at the beach but it really is no better than the others. The biggest perk would be access to the food here. Every day bacon wrapped fillet mignon for lunch. Most days lobster for lunch and dinner. Every day grilled fish, mussels, octopus, pan seared scallops, buttery soft calimari. Fresh fruits and veg. And pastries, baked each day like from the finest bakeries. Room service always available and outstanding. Book a time and its there. Towel exchange was easy as towels were already in your room when you arrive, swap them out when required. From Punta Cana airport it is a very short trip, direct about 30 minutes. Leaving Punta Cana airport however is a challenge. If you are expecting someone to announce when you should line up, forget that. If you paid in advance for priority boarding you wasted your money. It's a free for all. And like every other airport prices are out of this world. Eat prior to leaving your resort, or stop along the way at a chain to grab a bite. Duty free pluses were alcohol for sure. Compared to Canadian prices its always a bargain. Tobacco prices however are another story. Cigar prices like at the resorts are still artificially inflated for some reason so do your homework before hand. Overall, The Lopesan in Punta Cana is a resort that sets the bar very very high for service, quality of food and drink, property amenities, attention to detail, and attention to guest requirements. Having been to several other properties in Dominican Republic I would rank this as the go to resort if it's your first time or you are looking for an outstanding experience.
