Recently, my husband and I, as well as another couple, visited Punta Cana. This was our first trip to the country and the experience at this hotel really left a horrible taste in my mouth. I am really baffled, because this hotel is supposedly a five-star all-inclusive resort, but it definitely reminded me of an ungraded Motel 6.
When we first arrived at the hotel, at first glance, the resort was nice. We were greeted by a long driveway lined with palm trees. The front of the hotel was beautifully landscaped and the lobby was open air with a beautiful wooden wall. Unfortunately, the remaining portions of the hotel didn’t live up to the grandness of the entrance.
We were greeted by a group of very friendly bell-bops upon arrival. They welcomed us warmly, took our bags and escorted us to the front desk to check-in. Much to our dismay, the friendliness ended right with the bell bops. The young lady at the front desk was emotionless. Maybe it was because she didn’t speak English very well, but who knows. We definitely didn’t feel as welcome after check-in.
After taking our information, she advised us that our room wasn’t available and recommended that we visit the hotels’ buffet while we waited. We received a squirt of hand sanitizer before working into the buffet and immediately thought to ourselves “we are not in Kansas anymore”.
The buffet was a chaotic mad house! There was a black bird leisurely dining on the food. We came to find that this same bird returned daily for breakfast, lunch AND dinner! The floor was slippery and dirty. Seating was scarce and you literally had to track down the wait staff for silverware and drinks.
The food was ok, much of it was cold and unappetizing. This was disappointing because without a reservation made at minimum the day before, you had no other dining options. (Unfortunately, we were not told this by the young lady at the front desk and learned this lesson the hard way) I fell extremely ill from the buffet food the next day. I mean violently sick, which nearly ruined my paid excursion the next day.
Once we finally received the keys to our room, it was after 2pm. After a long day of traveling we wanted nothing more than to drop our bags off, take a shower and relax before exploring the hotel. After walking through the room and ending in the bathroom, we realized that was not an option, as we didn’t have washcloths and went a full 24 hours before we were able to get them.
The room was mediocre, definitely in serious need of updating. The fixtures in the bathroom were rusty and the water pressure in the shower, toilet and sink was virtually nonexistent. The furniture in the living area was old and stained with nail polish amongst other things. The bedding smelled clean, but was stained and needed to be replaced. Our mini bar had two waters and three bottles of sodas and was never restocked, even after we requested it. Later in the day, we received a plate of fresh fruit and a bottle of rum. The fruit was good, but warm because it was delivered well after we checked in after we spent most of our day at the beach and in the pool.
Despite everything mentioned above, we determined to remain optimistic. I mean, what choice did we have, this was our home for the seven days. We did enjoy a few features of the hotel such as the pool area, beachfront and the extremely strong drinks the bartender served. Unfortunately our optimism was thwarted when the couple we were traveling with starting having major issues. Not only did they not have washcloths, but their room was never cleaned, during the entire seven day trip. While my husband and I finally received washcloths on the second day, they didn’t receive theirs until around the four day. Even with these issues, we continued to try to enjoy ourselves.
The last straw for my husband and I came on our last full day at the resort. Our room’s key card was deactivated four times in one day. The level of frustrated I felt was indescribable, as the front desk was quite a distance from our room. There was no apology from the front desks for the inconvenience either. Needless to say, I was almost excited to see my vacation in Punta Cana coke to an end.
Again, I am so confused at this hotel’s high rating! Occidental Caribe definitely didn’t live up to the many positive reviews that I read online. It is highly suggested that you stay far away from this hotel!! Book at your own risk!!
