Extremely disappointed

Wendy H on May 18, 2024

The beach and pool were good. Upon arrival the man who drove the golf cart to our room literally could NOT drive he ran up the curb and kept backing up to try and go forward, we begged him to just let us walk. The front desk staff were not helpful at all. The first day house keeping didnt show up so by 2 we needed towels, we asked 3 times and no one delivered any. The ocean view from our room was the only good thing about this resort. Day 3 I got food poisoning as many others have said, my husband got it day 4. The pool needs to be truly cleaned. The pool staff are completely unaware of their audience. The music was obnoxious. The drinks had no flavor. The entire resort needs a solid cleaning and disinfecting.

Not too much Ocean and even less Royale.

Where to start? Well, let us start with the reasons we chose this resort for our vacations. We were looking for a smaller, adult resort on the Mayan Riviera, with at least a 4-star rating. The reviews followed the usual curve, with a decent split between good and bad. The pictures looked decent. We purchased our vacation through Sunwing (another “never again” moment) and were looking for the perfect 14-day stay to relax and celebrate our 35th anniversary. In the past, we always purchased Platinum or Club packages, so we opted for the Privilege plan right from the start. We booked the Privilege Honeymoon Suite. And now to the review. I will start with good first. First – the Staff dedicated to the Privilege guests is FANTASTIC! Starting with the dedicated Concierge/Butler duo – Daniela in the Privilege office and Alberto – our dedicated Butler – OUTSTANDING service, daily went beyond their duties to ensure we were happy with our stay at OMR. Javier – not really part of that group, provided a wealth of information and additional help (I really appreciate your help with my frustrations with Sunwing representatives!!! Beach Butlers/Waiters crew for the Privilege section – Jorge and Jesus – it was a real pleasure dealing with you. Privilege Lounge – Ilsa and Pilar – fantastic service, always happy to help and make your day better. Other staff in the restaurants: Carla in the main buffet and Jorge, maître d'hôtel @ Dolce Vita restaurant – fantastic service and even better interactions! Jorge – thank you for our final “special” dinner! And I cannot omit Margarita (activities shack) and Wille (Spa rep) – great conversations and oodles of fun! Thank YOU ALL! And finally – one of the best Wi-Fi systems in the resorts along the Mayan Riviera! Food – We tried all the restaurants and the single buffet in the resort. Our faves were Dolce Vita and El Charo. I was a bit worried about reviews depicting low-quality food and instances of food poisoning. I should not. The food was plentiful and decent quality. The move to remove buffet service in the restaurants’ serving Lunch was a great idea – eliminating food wastage and we did not feel it was limiting the food choices. More about the food reactions from other vacationers a bit later. Now, the “meh” part. The resort looks in person, less enticing than in pictures. The “villas” are more than a “bit dated” and “tired.” It is clean, but overall maintenance is not on par with the 4-star rating. There are signs of renovations starting, but it would be a lengthy process to bring this property to the 4-star levels. Rooms are generally clean, yet some signs of mould, water damage in bathrooms, shoddy painting, etc. are visible. And finally, the “below standard” part. The Privilege level perks, private check-in/check-out, Special dinner, upgraded mini-bar, room amenities, turn-down service, Welcome gits. We had no “private” check-in as Sunwing’s departure delays of almost 6 hours meant we got to the resort after midnight. No “special” treatment, and no welcome gifts, the only redeeming quality here was that we were driven on a golf cart to our room along with our bags. Something most of the Privilege guests have not experienced, as was evident from the talks with other guests. It took almost 5 days to “sort out” the appropriate mini-bar service, the person replenishing it insisted on providing bottom-shelf beer and removing the “upgraded” in-room coffee amenities (not working Nespresso machine). After a couple of days, our bathrobes and slippers miraculously disappeared and returned only after intervention from our Butler. Turn-down service – we experienced it only 3 days during our stay. These observations were quite consistent with the experiences of other Privilege level guests of the resort. We met a few guests who reported some food-related problems after eating at the buffet. Something that we luckily have not experienced. Now to entertainment. We did not partake in the daily “loud pool” activities, so we cannot comment on these. We did book a “romantic catamaran sailing trip to Isla Mujeres.” Both, the resort, Sunwing and the tour operators have a totally different view of what “romantic” means. In the pictures, you could see happy couples enjoying the sailing (never more than two, or three couples at the time), “VIP treatment” and “exclusive” snacks and libations. The reality was quite different. Almost thirty people squeezed on board of Parsifal, along with 3 or 4 toddlers, and one 6-month-old baby. Hardly a romantic and VIP atmosphere. Snacks on board consisted of some suspicious-looking mini donuts and apples, still with the grocery store stickers on them. And yes, there was an alcohol served on board. Of what quality? We will never know. You pay for the PREMIUM; you get the lowest possible level of service and product. Huge letdown. Conclusion We will not be back at this property, and possibly any other H10-owned property anytime soon. This is NOT a 4-star resort, I would argue that even 3-stars could be justified. The Privilege level is way below what stands for a standard of regular service in other resorts. The OMR’s offer is not worth the money you spend. As the title says, Not too much Ocean, and definitely NOT Royale. Very run-down property with some of the best staff we encountered in a long time.
