The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

NateBr1 on Sep 29, 2023

Ultimately, we enjoyed our stay, but I think this resort leans very heavily into the location being so amazing and cutting corners other places. The beach is stunning and the grounds are very well kept, truly beautiful. At check-in you're provided a welcome drink and some details about the activities available, along with a '$200 coupon book' which is full of $30, $20, and $10 coupons that can be used to make various activities less costly. For instance, you can save $30 on a massage at the spa, the catch is that the coupons can't be combined and only the best available discount is allowed, so if there is a 15% off special going at the spa, you can't even use one of the coupons. Fair enough, they are running a business. Then you're asked if you would like to meet with them for a 90-minute breakfast to hear more about the brand and their integration with Hyatt. Having read reviews online before coming, I knew it was actually something similar to a timeshare presentation, so I politely declined. The representative didn't fight me too much, other than boasting that 75% of the people on the resort are Club members and I should talk to them about it. Sure they are. The issues with the resort began to present themselves when it was time to eat lunch or dinner. For instance, almost every day they would setup a buffet next to the gardens by the pool with grilled meats, rice, potato wedges, etc. The staff had a very difficult time keeping up with demand for the grilled meats. If you didn't jump in line around noon when it opened, you would probably hear something like "15 minutes until more chicken is ready". This was a consistent theme many days, they just aren't able to handle to volume of guests, even though we were told the resort was just over 50% capacity, and September is of course part of the slow season. There are absolutely alternative places to eat, so it wasn't the end of the world, but it's a bit frustrating to only have one employee working a small grill when demand was high every day. For dinner there are no reservation requirements (other than hibachi), and being the slow season, you would think this wouldn't be an issue, but it was. There was a Mexican themed night one evening at the main buffet with a mariachi show on the patio. We arrived around 7PM and I could see that the outdoor area was pretty full, but I was asked by the hostess if we would like to sit outside or inside, and my wife requested a table outside so that we could watch the upcoming show. The manager then approached and said that he only had one table left, right next to the stage, and I could have it if I purchased a bottle of wine. !!! Offering a table if I bribe the resort with a wine purchase is wrong for a number of reasons. I declined and said that eating inside was fine. The hostess said that there were not any tables available for two people and that if I wanted to be seated now we would have to share a table with another couple (a round table that sat five people). I again declined and asked how long it would be for a table for two and the hostess could not give me an estimate - I believe this is hotel policy, they won't give a time estimate but will tell you the number of tables ahead if you request that information. Frustrated, I told the hostess that I would check with the other a la carte restaurants upstairs to see if they had a wait before committing to anything at the buffet. I went from one restaurant to the other and was told that there were 11 tables in front of us at the Italian restaurant, 8 tables ahead at the French, and a 6 tables wait for Japanese. I agreed to the wait at the Japanese restaurant and was given a buzzer for when our table was ready. The main hotel lobby and bar is right next to four of the a la carte restaurants and it is completely full every evening with people with buzzers waiting for tables for dinner. Either the restaurants are too small, they are understaffed, possibly poorly managed, or there just aren't enough places to eat for this to be such a frequent occurrence. Next on the list of issues was the availability of premium liquors, specifically Don Julio tequila. The first two days it was present at the swim up bar, then wasn't available the next two days. There were two others bar near each end of the beach and they would have it some days, but not others. It was like a scavenger hunt trying to find out where Don J was hiding day-to-day. For the price the guests pay, there should NEVER be a time when it is not available at any hotel bar, especially at what is considered to be a top resort brand in the area. Again, the beach is stunning, but there are a very limited number of palapas available, and if you don't run down to the beach at 7:30AM every morning to leave a hat or book with some towels, they will all be taken by 8:30AM or so. The resort also places cabanas for rent in front of the palapas in most areas except the 'Preferred Club' area, so the stunning beach views were usually partially blocked unless you paid $80 per day (after coupon) for a beach cabana, or paid up for Preferred Club - but even then, the palapas were taken quickly and not guaranteed. We didn't pay the premium for Preferred Club, the benefits included rooms in the buildings closest to the beach, a special section of chairs/palapas on the beach, and a lounge/restaurant near the beach. Drink service on the beach outside of Preferred Club seemed to be much spottier than those in Preferred Club areas. The shows each night were average, mostly cover bands with some dancers/performers mixed in. Several times this resort hit a homerun, it was definitely not all bad: We ordered room service for breakfast a few mornings to avoid a wait at the breakfast buffet, and it was incredible every time. Never a long wait and very convenient to use the tablet in the room for ordering. Room service for dinner the night we arrived was also spectacular. Excellent job by that team! Manny and Stephanie (I think that was her name) were fantastic for pool volleyball twice a day - Team Spicy Chicken Nuggets for life! Great energy from the entertainment team overall. Italian was the best meal at an a la carte restaurant, followed by the Seafood and Steakhouse restaurants. Housekeeping was fantastic every day, with turn-down service at night. Employees that passed you would smile and say hello, that was very nice. In the end, I don't think we would stay here again, other resorts have included restaurants for all guests near the ocean or with a view of the ocean while you eat instead of needing to be in Preferred Club for the privilege. Secrets Maroma has a special location and beach, but there is just too much competition in the premium hotel all-inclusive space to settle for the issues we encountered.
