Just another day in paradise!

Pamela R (Springfield, Illinois) on Apr 07, 2024

Just got back from our trip to Viva Wyndham, Playa del Carmen. I was reading some other reviews and wonder where those people really stayed.....our trip was incredible. The beach is beautiful, the pool well maintained. I'm a vegetarian and found plenty of food to eat, my husband stacked his plate with meat every night!! I like that some things are consistent on the buffet with alterations enough for variety. Lionel at the water sports hut was the best catamaran skipper!! Gerard in the buffet was an attentive server. All the bartenders hustled their butts off and never seemed flustered. True, there aren't ice machines available, but you can get your ice bucket filled at the 24 hour pool bar. Easy, peasy. It's a smaller resort, but it has SO many activities going on! If you get bored, that's your fault. We will definitely return to this resort if we visit Playa in the future.

Viva by Windham ? Never ever !

Bee M on Apr 05, 2024

It took 10 days to cool down myself and to settle my emotions returning home after 10 days vacations at Viva Maya by Windham, Playa del Carmen. Our first negative impression has no relation to Viva, it was either Funjet Vacation or AmStar fault : arriving at 2 AM March 14th in Cancun we been told AmStar expected us on 12th and there is no reserved transfer for us to the resort. Two almost 60 y.o. adults after 4.3 hours of flight came for a vacation stay in a middle of a night at foreign country on the shuttle station. Nice picture ? Two options have been offered by AmStar rep : to wait at the airport till 7 AM when regular shuttles gonna come or to hire a taxicab. Because our resort stayed at Playa del Carmen which is 55 miles distance the cheaper fare I found at 2 AM at the Cancun airport was $170.00. Only 3 competitors been available : $220 and $250 Upon arrival to the resort of course no welcome drink been offered, the lobby bar was closed. The room was okay, we slept till noon. Unexpected details about our stay terms&conditions started to pop up next day. What I learned at Viva is "all inclusive" applies not to everybody, to be specific - not to us - regular guests. You gonna be surprised Viva by Windham segregates guests by a plastic wrist color . Black wrist /bracelet is for elite people a.k.a. club members, blue one for regular guests and a green color for minors. For 20 years visiting "all inclusive" this was my first experience associated with a feeling I'm a sub-culture. Tell you why : - separated food menu - separated sits a the cafe - separated alcohol selection - separated beach spot and separate chaise lounge - separate color of beach towels Indeed I 've been negatively impressed by a phrase, " you are not qualified" when I approached the beach bar asking for a decent rum brand to be served There is no separation notice on a bar desk, cocktail makers used their own discretion if the guest qualified to be served by specific alcohol grade. That was my first shock. A little bit about alcohol. Never seen in my entire life ( 59 years) Vodka 35%, Rum 36%, Whiskey 35% - all in plastic bottles similar to Pepsi . After kind of a talk to their supervisor a glass bottle 1.75 l of white Bacardi rum became available for me. It stayed hidden behind plastic bottles mostly not visible to approaching bar visitors. I knew it stays there and barmen knew I know about it. Ridiculous, right? I saw such cheap alcohol in Dominican Republic all inclusive resorts 15 years ago but never seen such crap in Mexico. It seems I forgot to tell you there is no bar in the room and the refrigerator is absolutely empty. Why a small ref. is in the room remains a secret for me. Do not expect bottled shampoo or a soap bar in a restroom, a liquid version at the dispensary box attached to the wall inside the shower. Another problem is an air-condition filter. Viva by Windham does not use disposable filters. Upon requesting a maintenance worker to change it ( because it was fully black color and mold), he opened a cover, removed it, placed on a shower floor, removed a showed head and washed it with a water steam into our shower room. And installed it back right away. We got either infection or a severe allergy that we brought to New York after such 9 nights stay at Viva. I think is because of that filter. Beach sand and nightly entertainment been okay. Non motorized activity staff is friendly and nice. Viva by Windham has 4 restaurants. To book your restaurant visit you have to satisfy following requirements : you are qualify for 1 restaurant visit per 3 nights of stay period. Just because we paid for 11 days we got a permission to visit all 4 restaurants. Not many visitors were so lucky. Another details I have to mention - visitors spoken language ( if you are interested in that details. The number 1 spoken language is Spanish, number 2 is German, number 3 is French, number 4 is English , number 5th is Polish. There is no sauna, no hot tube available. Archery range for 2 shooters is open from 10:30 am till 12:30 pm and from 3 pm. till 5 pm. Nice 10 yards range. Kids been presented from a toddler age till 18th y.o. Food selection is extremely poor and the menu stays the same day after day with a small deviation between lunch and dinner. All breakfasts for 10 days were the same. Fish was presented by frozen portioned white fish nuggets on a grill, seafood was presented by overcooked frozen Chinese shrimps; calamary cold salad on ice was also available. Fresh squeezed juice presented by 6 or 7 fruits selection was good and refreshing. Breakfast, lunch and dinner been served at the same lobby located cafe for all visitors. Finally, at the good-by day we were forced to pay extra $22.00 as local environmental tax per room. It seems we polluted Mexico by our stay and such tax Viva by Windham is not capable to absorb into their all inclusive scheme. If you want to ask me if I ever gonna stay at Windham anymore, I world say definitely NO. If you don't trust me - be my guest, pay $3,400 and see everything from your own eyes.
