GOOD FROM AFAR BUT FAR FROM GOOD !!!

My recent stay at Viva Maya by Wyndham was unfortunately one of the most disappointing resort experiences I have had. While the property itself is visually appealing and the nightly entertainment was enjoyable, several significant issues negatively impacted our vacation. The resort grounds are well maintained, and the evening shows were entertaining and professionally presented. However, these positives were overshadowed by ongoing concerns regarding customer service, food quality, amenities, and overall guest experience. One of the first issues we encountered was the Wi-Fi service. Connectivity throughout the resort was extremely unreliable, both in our room and in public areas. Even basic tasks such as checking email were often difficult. When the issue was reported, the response from staff was disappointing, as we were informed that Wi-Fi service is not guaranteed anywhere on the property. Dining was another area where the resort fell short of expectations. Restaurant reservations became available only several days after our arrival despite attempting to book immediately after check-in. Additionally, the quality of food in both the buffet and specialty restaurants was consistently below expectations. While taste is subjective, multiple members of our group found the dining experience disappointing throughout the week. Beverage service was also problematic. Long wait times at bars were common particularly at the main pool area. Soft drink access was inconvenient, with only one self-service soda station available at the buffet which was not operational for two days. The advertised swim-up bar was rarely operational during our stay, opening only one day for maybe 5 hours for the 7 days. Communication presented another challenge. All announcements, entertainment information, and activities were conducted in Spanish and French, with no English translation provided. International guests should be aware that English-language communication appeared limited during our visit. The beach experience was impacted by significant sargassum seaweed accumulation, which affected both water clarity and beach conditions. While this is largely a regional environmental issue beyond the resort’s control, it nonetheless affected our overall enjoyment of the destination. Overall while Viva Maya by Wyndham offers attractive grounds and quality evening entertainment, our experience was negatively affected by poor Wi-Fi service, disappointing food quality, limited restaurant availability, long waits for beverages, communication barriers, and other operational shortcomings. Every traveler’s expectations and experiences may differ, but based on our stay, I would not choose to return and would not personally recommend this resort to friends or family seeking a traditional all-inclusive vacation experience.
Sisters Vacation

My sister and I recently spent a week at the Viva Maya by Wyndham in Playacar, Mexico, and we had an absolutely wonderful holiday. Before booking, I read many reviews, and after staying there, I think it’s important for people to understand exactly what this resort is—and what it isn’t. The Food One of the most common complaints I saw was about the buffet being repetitive. Personally, I found there was plenty of variety. Breakfast included cereals, fresh fruit, made-to-order omelets, pastries, and hot items. There were always salads, fruits, grilled foods, and multiple choices at lunch and dinner. I honestly can’t imagine not finding something to eat. We also ate at three à la carte restaurants—the Mexican, Mediterranean, and Cosmopolitan—and all three were excellent. The Rooms The rooms are not huge, but they were spotless and very well maintained. There is a small refrigerator in the room, but it is not stocked. If you want beer, soft drinks, or bottled water in your room, you’ll need to purchase them. However, there are filtered water stations throughout the resort, which many guests use. The Resort This is a family-friendly resort and it’s not very large. The layout is shaped somewhat like a horseshoe, making it easy to get around. I highly recommend downloading the Viva app before you arrive. It contains schedules, restaurant information, activities, and answers to many of the questions that people seem to complain about in reviews. Noise Another common complaint was noise. If you’re staying near the pool or beach area, you’ll be close to the evening entertainment stage. Shows begin around 9:30 p.m., and yes, you will hear them. If you’re someone who is very sensitive to noise, you may want to request a room farther away from that area or consider a different type of resort. Beach and Sargassum Yes, there is sargassum. It’s present throughout much of Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and even parts of Florida. Some days are better than others. During our stay, it never prevented me from enjoying the ocean. The Pool One thing visitors should know is that the pool is warm. When temperatures are in the mid-30s Celsius with humidity pushing the “feels like” temperature to 44–45°C, the pool does not feel cool. That’s simply the reality of travelling to this region during the hotter months. A Few Things to Know If you lose your wristband, room key, or towel card, there is a replacement charge, so keep track of them. Mexico also has strict smoking regulations. Smoking is not permitted on balconies or throughout most of the resort. There are designated smoking areas available for guests who smoke. Location There’s a small market just outside the resort that’s fun to explore. The resort also hosts a Mexican-themed evening (during our stay it was on Tuesday), where the courtyard fills with local vendors, music, and cultural displays. Playa del Carmen is approximately a 30–35 minute walk away. (150 pesos by taxi) It’s an enjoyable walk, but be prepared for intense heat and humidity, especially during the summer months. Final Thoughts We travelled as two sisters celebrating time together and had a fantastic vacation. The resort was clean, the staff were friendly, the food was good, and the location was beautiful. My advice to future travelers is simple: read the resort description and reviews carefully so you know what to expect. Many of the complaints I saw were actually about things that are clearly stated beforehand. If you understand what this resort offers, there’s a very good chance you’ll enjoy your stay as much as we did.
Don’t book at this hotel

The service was not good compared to other resorts. At the reception, no staff member helped with our luggage or guided us to our room. We had to find the room on our own. The hotel did not provide complimentary bottled water or any drinks in the room. While sitting in the common areas, there was no service to offer drinks; staff only came to collect empty glasses. The food was acceptable, and the à la carte restaurant was very good. Room cleaning and housekeeping were also satisfactory. Overall, the lack of service and attention to guests was disappointing. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this hotel to others.
To loud at night!
Adriana v on Jun 17, 2026
We spend 14 days in this hotel and we felt very agitated about the noise of singing/yelling drunk people almost every night around the poolbar wich is open day and night. Furthermore we saw people eating and drinking (spoiling) alcohol IN the pool and that must have had an effect on the water quality. The rooms were spotless clean and the beds really comfortable but we really would have appreciated at least some bottles with cold water in the fridge and a possibility to dry wet clothes. The waiters/waitresses in the main restaurant were all very nice but those at the Cafe Maya and the poolbar weren't at all! The entertainment was great. Overall we wouldn't come back. We want to relax when we're on holiday but -I repeat- there are to many drunk and very loud people during the night.
