An enjoyable stay, despite some negatives

sundaygirl2 (Nutley, New Jersey) on Jul 05, 2024

We stayed at the GP White Sands for 5 days and very much enjoyed it. Since the good definitely outweighs the bad, I will begin with the negative, and it is a big one for an all inclusive. The drinks were bad. Everything had an artificial, way too sugary flavor. There is no real juice on the property, neither at the bar or the buffet. Everything is a weird cheap tasting artificial "fruit" flavor. The best of the bunch was the passion fruit, and, depending on who mixed it for you (Antonio was the best at the WS pool), it was passable in a margarita or mojito. But they still didn't taste like either of those 2 drinks. By day 3, I gave up and just had seltzer with lime. The house red was good, so that is what I had at dinner. Food: mostly mediocre, like most all inclusives. We preferred the buffets because you could always find something that was good. The tacos and Mexican food were great- fresh guacamole! The hibachi station at the Hacienda was good, too. Fruit was always delicious. Service was generally better at the Dahlia, as was the oatmeal in the morning. We enjoyed having lunch outdoors at the Grand Azul. The only good "restaurant" we ate at was Sumptuori, whose beef seemed to be better quality than the buffets, and our chef Paulino was fun but understated. The Paisana and Portofino had good salads, but none of us liked our entrees. Meat was chewy and pastas tasted weird -- the butter in brown gnocchi butter sage sauce was margarine, I think, and there was no sage. The filling in the ravioli not good. Tiramisu nice, though! Really, there was no difference between restaurant food and buffet food, just a change in atmosphere. Nightly entertainment: standard resort; don't expect too much, but it was nice one night for a change. Good mariachi band and some good dancers with pretty costumes. Room: Nicely decorated and a great size with a nice big shower. The AC worked, but the room always felt damp, and some of the bedding smelled musty. The good: beautiful grounds! We loved the jungle paths from the WS to the Colonial, and we liked the many covered walkways since it rained a lot while we were there. Other reviews mentioned a bad smell, but they have since drained and cleaned the lagoon, so this was not an issue. Lots of iguanas, but didn't notice excessive droppings on paths, as others mentioned. We found the grounds beautifully maintained. So many activities! We loved archery with the fabulous Mafer, water aerobics with Miguel and playing pickle ball as a family. The boys had a great scuba experience. We used the gym twice-it was very good! Lots of natural light and many modern machines, with water and towels available. Everyone on the staff was super nice, professional and helpful. We loved the immaculately clean pool at the White Sands, and the quietness of this pool as compared with the Colonial. At no time of day was there a problem getting chairs in the shade. The beach area was small, but again, there was always someplace to sit. If you want to swim, you have to go to the Colonial stretch. Lots of rocks and seaweed elsewhere. It was crowded in that area, but the water was lovely. My 2 teenagers enjoyed the junior club building and sports bar where they could meet other people their age. America and Euro Cup soccer was going on, and it was fun to watch the games in the sports bar (though this needs to be repaired and refurbished; roof was leaking during rain storms.) The resort is a big one, but we found it completely walkable. We never bothered with the trams, except at check out to help with our luggage. Overall, a great stay . I don't feel strongly enough to recommend it, but I wouldn't dissuade you against it either.

This is not the place if you want top service, fast service or really good hot food & drinks. The club manager was very unpleasant and unaccomodating, the "club member areas" we're nothing special there were never towels available and they didn't even offer patron tequila in Mexico!! We got no sleep because the staff thought it was appropriate to remodle and move funrinishings in vacant rooms above us from midnight to 4am in the morning. The phone system offered a English prompt however when you selected the English option it was still in Spanish and pretty much impossible to get to a live person . The food in the day resturasts was very middle of the road but never great. Most of the time it was Luke warm or cold... honestly if vacation was only about the beauty of the rooms and property I would give them 5 stars but this property gets a 1star from me because service, friendliness, good food are everything when a person goes on vacation. I would not go here for vacation ever again!

Best dinner show and staff …

BackPacker285983 on Jul 05, 2024

To whom it may concern, Janet was absolutely “PERFECT” dinner, show were excellent. It was one of the best dinners we have had for the whole week. Janet took the best care of all of us and made sure that everyone was satisfied from the 3 years old to the 62 years old. Thank you, WRB …

Beautiful hotel installations, nice rooms, good food and nice service, everyone was nice with us. Also I recommend the #chiccabaret at the TRC hotel or RTC, i forgot the name but it is next to the one WhiteSand location, the dinner was great but the show was fabulous, more than 2 hours of dancing and singing, you wont regret it.
