Always an incredible experience!

DrBlas2019 (Lakewood, California) on Sep 02, 2024

We were still at the hotel when I wrote this review, and as usual, this beautiful property doesn't disappoint. We have stayed at The Del several times in the last year, and we love it so much we became resort members. Jose, Joycette and Thomas at the Windsor are always amazing, as well as Jimmy, their bartender. The property is undergoing some major renovations, but we were not impacted in any way throughout our stay; however, some minor inconveniences should be expected when a beautiful historic property is being worked on. Our stays have always been incredible and we have zero complaints about the staff or the property, if anything, we cannot wait for Christmas season to enjoy the lights, and for the renovations to be completed for us to try the newly renovated rooms with a balcony. Lastly, the staff at The Del is amazing, and we always enjoy our stay at this historic landmark.

5th Summer at The Del

KimDSF (San Francisco, California) on Sep 02, 2024

We love Hotel Del Coronado but were shocked when we arrived to see the hotel under construction. It’s not posted anywhere on the website. This is our 5th summer and we continue coming for the magic this hotel creates. With that said, this trip fell a little short. To be a world class hotel, there needs to be transparency of construction ahead of arrival to set expectations. Employees need to be welcoming and also act like they want to be there. We booked a cabana to celebrate my birthday. Our server was friendly in the beginning but there were multiple instances where didn’t feel prioritized and had to run her down for service. Not sure if the hotel cut back on staff due to the renovations, but our server was often overwhelmed. She seemed frustrated when our chicken nachos came with no chicken and we asked her for chicken. When we saw her the following day, she was borderline rude. She got the required 18% + we tipped a little extra. Apparently she didn’t think it was enough. Most of the employees we came in contact with are great. Check-in was amazing (I’m sorry I didn’t get her name) but she helped us with an upgrade to an oceanfront room and it was incredible! We also met Wendy on the Sun Deck. She has an amazing personality and provided excellent service. One of our favorite things to do is have cocktails as a family and listen to Gonzo at the Babcock & Story Bar. Gonzo was on vacation this week and it just wasn’t the same! We enjoyed the coffee bar each morning and sundaes every night. The hotel makes it easy for families to have a great time! Again, thank you to many of the employees who went out of their way for our stay. We heard Nobu is coming in so we are excited to see the hotel post renovation next summer.

Worst hotel I have ever stayed at in my life!! And we are international travelers!

Johanna E (Los Angeles, California) on Aug 31, 2024

Worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in my life. There’s construction everywhere. We’re international travelers and this is not a 4 or 5 star hotel. This is more like a two star hotel. We ordered two sandwiches and two Diet Coke and it was $60. Are you kidding me?? Run from this place. Oh, and by the way, the margaritas are $42 each.

Not worth the price of admission

Mark-Eilers on Aug 31, 2024

My wife, 2 young children, and myself stayed here August 6-10, 2024. The property is a far cry from what we remember from years ago, and not for the better. For the price we paid per night ($750), we were quite disappointed. We arrived and circled for a while before being able to find an actual entrance. The construction is overwhelming, with construction equipment, fencing, etc everywhere. I finally stopped at what appeared to be a valet and was told it was the valet for a certain part of the hotel only. Our entrance was elsewhere. They provided good directions, and we finally were able to find the correct entrance. From check-in to check-out, there were cracks in the façade they try to create. We arrived early, around 10. I checked my luggage with the valet, who instructed us to let the front desk know we had arrived, in case our room is ready early. I inquired about self-parking, which was $55/night. According to the valet, the parking garage was across the property. Didn’t seem far, but with the construction there was no direct route. He stated it would be almost a mile walk around the entire property to get to and from the garage. They almost force you into valet at $75/night by not having a reasonable self-parking location or route. I went to the check-in (as instructed by the valet) and was met with a rather rude employee who simply stated check-in wasn’t until 4 and we were early. I stated that I was quite aware we were early but was instructed to let her know in case the room was ready early. She replied simply by saying that’s not going to happen. It was not a pleasant interaction, and certainly not a good first impression for the renowned HdC. We eventually were able to check-in, and the room was in one of the newer towers. Nothing spectacular about the room, looked like a standard hotel room one could get for less than $200 a night anywhere else. But this is the renowned HdC, so it’s $750 a night. The closets smelled of body odor, essentially unusable. The toilet paper holder was coming off the wall. The room did not appear well kept. Housekeeping was good the first 3 nights of the stay. However, the last full day we were there housekeeping failed to come at all. We called the front desk to inquire why they didn’t come and could not get an answer. They came and dropped off a trash bag with toiletries and towels. Did not include washcloths or toilet paper though. So, here we are at $750 a night and can’t get consistent housekeeping? Another crack in the façade. Finally, at check out, we requested valet to assist with luggage as they would not allow us to get a luggage cart to use on our own. It literally took 30 minutes to get someone to come to the room and assist with luggage. If they had let me use the luggage cart on my own, I would have had it done in 10 minutes tops. We had a flight to catch, so I went to get the car while we were waiting. I saw 3 valet workers standing around talking and asked them why the luggage was taking so long. Their answer was that they only had one person that morning assisting with luggage. I guess the valet are not able to help with that when needed? During your stay, expect to pay for EVERYTHING. I think Hotel del Coronado loosely translates to Nickel & Dime. Want to utilize a bike, pay for it. Beach chair, pay for it. Beach umbrella, you guessed it, additional fees apply. They have a makeshift skating rink (which was ridiculous), for a fee of course. There’s a coffee station near the lobby, but even a simple cup of coffee has a self-pay station attached to it. Even the Homewood Suites will give you at least a free cup of coffee with your stay. I am really not sure what the extensive resort fees and taxes were for, as everything came with its own additional fee. I guess we were simply paying taxes and fees for the privilege of staying at the renowned Hotel del Coronado. On a side note, others have mentioned the beaches being closed due to contamination. We were lucky in that regards, as the beach was open during our stay. However, it’s not a private beach as they make you believe on their website. The only private portion of the beach is reserved for those room/cottages that are even more overpriced. My advice, stay at one of the many other places available on Coronado, and bypass this overpriced resort. It is not worth the price of admission.

Great if you like raw sewage!

DONALD T on Aug 29, 2024

This resort is located on one of the most sewage contaminated beaches in the country. We were not advised of this sewage problem prior to our stay, and we paid for an oceanfront upgrade upon arrival for the privilege of being close to the sewage smell. We couldn’t open our balcony slider door due to the horrific smell. The hotel is not responsible for the sewage problem, however they are completely aware of it as an ongoing problem with no advance warning to guests. There attitude is you should have known! I can’t believe this beach was not closed and saw many families swimming in the water. As a Hilton Honors Diamond member I was able to receive partial refunds after contacting and explaining what I experienced to Hilton. Shame on you Del Coronado for your deceitful practice of not making it clear to guests ahead of time about the ongoing sewage problem!
