Pretty resort but too expensive

danielleandken on Jun 21, 2021

My husband and I are avid travelers. We have stayed all over the Carribean in all-inclusive resorts, rented villas, cruises, etc. My husband had always wanted to try a Sandals resort. We have stayed at luxury all-inclusive in the past and I didn't feel that Halcyon was worth the money. We stayed in a standard room and since we weren't at Club Level we didn't have access to room service. That was really odd and I haven't stayed somewhere before where the room status impacted room service. The resort is a bit tired and the pools need a good clean and tile/ grout is grubby. The resort ambiance is very very lush and pretty. It would have been nice to have meal service of some sort by the pool. There was hit or miss drink service by the pool and beach. We did have a great expierence with the spa staff- Tameka and Celine give the best massages we have ever had. Amazing and superior service by the spa staff. It would have been nice though to have an actual spa area (it is a room off of the gym). The Hibachi and Sushi restuarant was seriously so good. Dong, the manager, is so incredibly hard working and very nice. Tammy, waitress at Kelly's, was very kind and fun. Chester, the tennis pro, was my husband's favorite and went above and beyond. The bar staff was generally a bit cranky- especially the pool bars. We even saw some pool bar staff rolling their eyes are orders. My husband and I are very polite so this was unexpected. Overall the food was very good. The vibe is definitely a younger crowd- which is fine- just an fyi. Island Routes excursion desk is staffed with very nice and helpful people. The line to get the Covid test was over two hours long...... (which we have traveled during Covid and that is kind of standard). I felt that the there are a lot of better places to stay for the cost. If the cost was half of what we paid I would say it was great. For the crazy amount of money we paid for a regular room with sometimes pretty rude service and lack of amenities it was not a good value.

Consider booking somewhere else!

My husband and I just got back from Sandals Halcyon Beach, celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. I normally am not one to write reviews, but our experience was so disappointing that I wanted to make sure others don't make the same mistake we did. We stayed for 5 nights in a private pool with waterfall and full butler service. When we arrived at the airport we had arranged for a private transfer to the hotel. We had been told that the shuttle vans that transport you to the resort were hot, crowded and the drivers were a bit wild when they drove. Since I often struggle with motion sickness we paid $140 for a private transfer. The gentleman that picked us up had a dirty vehicle, talked on his cell phone multiple times during the 1.5 hour trip and traded beers with another driver right before we headed out. When we arrived at the resort we were escorted to the "club" area and then quickly moved to a place to eat. While we were eating we were introduced to our Butler. For the remainder of the day and evening we received no Butler services. There was supposed to be turn down service, dinner set up, an orientation, help with unpacking, pressing your items etc., as promised by the Butler Elite standards on the website. We received none of those amenities. After not knowing what to do for dinner, we ordered room service. The food came cold and stale tasting 1 hour later. Late in the evening a cell phone was dropped off at our room that we were to use to contact the Butler. The phone wouldn't turn on and the battery was dead. Thankfully my husband's toothbrush charger was able to charge the phone. The next day we received no contact from any butler service and made our way to the pool. Finally, after waiting half the day, we decided to visit the "club" to find out how to figure out who our Butler was. The woman in the club was rude and short with her words. Long story short, we finally figured out who our Butler's were and became more disappointed as the days went on. To put it best, they were very reactive, not proactive. Things were forgotten constantly and they seem to be servicing too many people to be able to give attention to detail to all their costumers. Reservations were extremely difficult for them to set up, I think, because they kept forgetting to set them up and waited until the last minute. The food at all the restaurants was nothing special. We did have a few good meals, but overall, it wasn't the quality of service and food that we expected for what we paid. The women from the spa make their rounds all day long trying to sell you spa services. They approach you when you walk around the resort and even while you have your eyes closed trying to relax by the pool. We didn't have any spa services so I cannot speak on the quality of the spa. There are a few men on the beach that try to sell you things as well, which is a bit annoying. Their sales pitches are long and they hound you each time they see you. Speaking of the beach, please don't expect white soft sand and crystal clear waters. The beach has more of a lake feel than a Caribbean beach type of feel. The room itself was nice and the housekeeping was clean and efficient. We did have a large number of ants outside by our private small pool area and a cat that wandered into our room when we opened the door. Overall, we left feeling like we overpaid greatly for what we received. I would NOT purchase the Butler service if you are thinking about booking. You also are not able to visit the other resorts unless you are vaccinated, which they never told us. Most of the staff was friendly, but we did encounter rude staff as well. They say, "welcome home," and then treat you as you are an annoyance at times. The area of the resort is noisy as well. You hear constant beeping of horns, motors accelerating and lawn maintenance machines. Two times the fire alarms went off for well over 30 minutes for no apparent reason. In the evening the noise from the local bugs/frogs or whatever it was, provided you with a consent high pitched beeping type of sound...all night long! I would HIGHLY recommend looking into other resorts before booking with Sandals. I am not sure if it was just this resort or not, but our one experience was enough to sway us away from ever booking with a Sandals resort again. If you do book, I hope you have a much better experience than we did!
