A first class hotel to which we always return

PAENYC on Feb 02, 2023

My family has visited the Sands 8 of the past 10 winters, skipping only on account of the pandemic. It's altogether delightful. The beach, on Grace Bay, is gorgeous and serene with ample palapas and lounges for all guests. The pool is large and lovely. The in-house restaurant, Hemingways, has a terrific and diverse menu -- special props at dinner for the lobster and tuna entrees and at lunch for the burrata salad. The rooms consist largely of 2BR suites with lots of space and all relevant amenities. The staff is first rate and has routinely responded to requests and questions with dispatch, competence, and warmth. The Sands is also an easy stroll into town and to a host of great restaurants there or at nearby hotels along Grace Bay,

Great location, but tainted by some big issues.

We’ve stayed in Grace Bay several times but this was our first time with children and first time at the Sands. The positives are the hotel is in perhaps one of the best locations in terms of beach size and proximity to town. Close to downtown but not crowded on either side by other resorts. I found the front desk staff to be lovely on arrival, and throughout our stay. The accommodations are a great size for the price, compared to other resorts, but as with everything you get what you pay for. The rooms are very bright as other travelers mentioned, so if you have a child on the sofa bed, they’ll be waking up early. We tried to upgrade to a 2 bedroom because of this but unfortunately we’re unable, not surprisingly, it’s a busy time for resorts. The front desk was very kind about trying to upgrade, but we completely understood that it simply wasn’t possible. The room also had a leaky dishwasher, something leaking from the utility closet and the sofa bed broke a couple of nights before our departure, but a cot was provided. Once again the rooms but do have issues. The cleaning was fine it was done in a timely manner, but as other reviews stated our floors were not cleaned the entire stay. I’m pretty easy going about housekeeping on vacation but would of really appreciated just a Mid stay cleaning of the floor. Last and finally the biggest issue for us. The resort allows people to walk up from the beach and use the facilities. I don’t mean use the restaurant and bar as expected. I mean beach loungers. We saw it more than once and one of the visitors asked if she could use the loungers even if she wasn’t staying there and was told yes. That’s a big deal on a very popular beach during peak season, every bed was full when this happened. And let’s be honest who wants to pay thousands to stay at a resort if anyone can use the facilities. One day a drunken guy with a guitar and zero musical skills plopped down on a bed with his dirty bathroom towel. Once again the beach was full. When after a few hours of listening to him I reported it to staff, just so they could ask him to stop playing, they did nothing. I then politely asked him to stop singing, not even to leave just be quiet. He was loud and verbally abusive. I reported to 2 more staff on the beach, still nothing. Everyone around us HATED it. The main problems is there’s a safety issue here. This guy by his own admittance was not staying here, was drunk and using the facilities. We later saw him wondering throughout the resort. I understand people come and go on this beach and I love walking the beach and having a cocktail at other hotels but staff at other places are very aware of the guests and there comfort. The beach staff here isn’t and for that reason I would probably never stay here again, it’s just too big of a safety issue for me.
