Great hotel, Hospitality and Location

momWashington (Washington) on Feb 17, 2024

We come to Victoria twice a year and stay at the Hotel Grand Pacific. The hospitality is always superb! The location is walkable to all of the amazing restaurants, music and pubs. The in house restaurant, Fathom is delicious and the lounge a fun place to enjoy a cocktail or a night cap. We’ve been coming here since they opened and their service is consistent. There’s a Starbucks directly across the street which I love! The BEST SUITE in the hotel is the Premier Suite room 610. The living room dining area looks out a huge windowed wall with a slider over the inner harbor where the Coho and the Clipper dock several times daily. You can enjoy the gas fireplace while watching tv. The view off the dining room and the oversized bedroom is the Parliament Building which are covered in lights and so beautiful at night. This suite also has a sofa sleeper and a half bath for guests. The bedroom has a large tv and a walk in shower with multiple shower heads and a double sink and bidet! If you’re a lover of Italian food you must make a reservation at IL Terazzo. It’s SOOOO delicious!! Ask for Marissa she’s an excellent server, we had her two nights in a row.

Old, worn and uncaring

eyp708 (Vancouver, Canada) on Jan 23, 2024

I stayed at the Hotel Grand Pacific for 3 nights in January for the Victoria Whisky Festival. Although this was not my first stay, it was my first stay since 2019. Unfortunately, this stay was really not enjoyable. Upon checking in, I'm not sure if the girl at the desk was new, forgetful or not detail oriented, but she asked the same question multiple times. Had she forgotten that she already asked us? Was she new and nervous? Was she going through the motions and not paying attention to what she was asking and wasn't listening to the answers? She even called our room to ask us one of the questions again. The room itself, which I knew would be an older room, was more worn than I expected. The upholstery on the furniture was worn, frayed, dirty and sometimes stained. The bathroom counter had a huge chunk missing on the front. The alarm clock was set 5 hours ahead of the current time and the instructions on setting the time didn't work. The pillows were all very thin - no mix of pillow types here - and the bed was harder than the floor. In the middle of the first night, I finally went down to the front desk to ask for a mattress pad or extra comforter to make the bed softer. The person manning the front desk gave me a very shocked and surprised look. I guess I'm the only one who has ever complained their bed was so hard that it was uncomfortable to the point it was physically hurting me. They offered to deliver a foam pad to the room, which helped a bit but not a lot. After 3 nights of sleeping (or more accurately, attempting to sleep), I've returned home with a very sore back. We were checked out by the same person who checked us in, who again, asked the same questions repeatedly but seemed to have no interest in the actual answer. She asked us twice "How was your stay?" My husband answered good, but I responded "OK". Having worked in a customer service and retail, if someone had responded "OK", I would've used it as an opportunity to find out what the problem was with their stay and see if there was anything I could do to leave them with a better impression of the hotel. However, she either wasn't really listening or didn't care, and simply continued to check us out. The location of the hotel itself was good in that it was quiet and there were 2 grocery stores nearby for getting snacks to eat in between whisky Masterclasses. As well, there was a Starbucks across the street. However, it is a bit far away from the main areas of Victoria if you're looking for restaurants, other coffee shops, to run errands, etc. The grounds of the hotel themselves was covered in snow when we arrived. Although they shovelled the snow leading up from the sidewalk right to their entrance, they missed the opportunity to go the extra mile and shovel the sidewalk from the crosswalk to their actual property. Legally, they only have to shovel the walkways that belong to their property. However, it is very difficult to drag a suitcase in the snow and many of their guests will likely leave the property to eat or explore. Nearby, The Fairmont Empress had taken the extra step to not only shovel all of the paths on their property, but also all the sidewalks surrounding their property all the way to all of the pedestrian crossings. Just taking this extra step gave me a very good impression of the Fairmont Empress, even though I was not staying there. But it said to me they cared about the safety of their guests and had thought about the fact that their guests might be utilizing these areas to get around. Whereas the Hotel Grand Pacific did the bare minimum. Overall, if I did not have to book Hotel Grand Pacific as part of the Victoria Whisky Festival out of towner package, I would not choose to stay there again.
