Tipping Required!

sksbss (Attleboro, Massachusetts) on May 04, 2024

This was the first time out of the country for us in 15 yrs and first time for our kids. The price of the stay included gratuities so I planned on walking around in my bathing suit without carrying any cash. We soon learned thats not the case and cash was necessary to have a "decent" time there. We had one server that was very rude, miserable face, no hi, didn't offer us anything to drink but was smiling and nice to the rest of her tables. That's when we realized it was because we didn't tip the first day we were there because we had no idea that tipping was expected there. Overall the staff was average, not as friendly as you would expect on a vacation on a beautiful island. I get better service at my local Starbucks than there. Not tipping was an honest mistake the first night but we shouldn't be pressured to tip or treated poorly, especiallyfor my kids first island trip. We won't be going back for this reason. * Beach/water was beautiful. If you want one of the palapas you need to wake up very early around 530 and claim one or you can keep your bag there the night before like most people did. * Food average, bfast was great. Paparazzi at the Tamaraijn is very good. * Cafe was very good with great pastries. * Went to the donkey sanctuary, it was fine, all you need is half hr and don't let the taxi come back for you, have the place just call you a taxi to go back. Our driver said most people stay 1-1.5 hrs and that was too long and we ended up sitting in the heat. * shuttle to the Tamarijn is convenient and easy * gym is nice/clean, good equipment

We were disappointed with the Divi. Mainly because of the food and drinks. It is nearly impossible to get a reservation at any of the five restaurants . They are almost always booked, and you need to make reservations two days in advance. Forget using the app. The only way we got reservations was by going to the concierge. And even then, we were only able to make two reservations. That is absurd for an all inclusive, but especially because when we were at the restaurants they weren't half full. Both nights we ate at the restaurants we were told the kitchen was slow because they couldn't handle the volume. But in any case, the food was not good. The best thing I got there was creme brulee for dessert. One night we decided to try the dinner buffet at around 8:30, and the servers were giving us attitude because I guess they thought they were done for the night. That food was the worst. Breakfast buffet was average, but the revolving doors to the restaurant were filthy day after day. The drinks were very weak and always served in small plastic cups. They tasted like premixed sugary frozen juice. Not good quality liquor or . We ended up buying our own liquor and keeping it in the room. The landscaping was haphazard and overgrown in spots. The pools were a bit cloudy for me too. The rooms are fairly clean, but bring your own soap, shampoo, and conditioner. There was a soap dispenser in the shower that remained empty the entire 5 days we were there. There is a shampoo/conditioner dispenser too, but I had to buy my own because what they had didn't work for my hair. The best thing about the Divi is absolutely the beach. The beach is just beautiful and very close to any of the rooms there. We liked having our own deck area off the room as well.
