I have been coming to the Banff Springs two or more times a year for the past five years. I’m blessed to live nearby. I adore this place in all seasons and never tire of visiting. But I confess that I love it best in the winter. The staff are amazing, the surroundings spectacular and the hotel really is the Castle in the Rockies.

My wife and I were in Banff for a few days and thought that a few drinks and a meal at the Banff Springs would be a great idea. The walk up from town was comfortable but when we arrived, we couldn't enter as only registered guests were allowed past the driveway. Signs were posted and staff were turning people away. This exclusive access was not mentioned anywhere on their website -thus our thoughts that this would be a great way to spend an evening. Please update this on your website as we were not the only potential diners turned away.

I booked a reservation from their too good to be true deal. This is absolutely very misleading. When you state it’s second night free? It’s should be FREE right. At first I knew this was too good to be true! Wow what a amazing price. I was a fool. Got super super excited! Than I was very disappointed. So I contacted them to make sure I was reading this right. The ladies on the phone told me that they charge per night and the price that was shown was just an averaged if you book 2 nights and I told her that it very misleading. Why didn’t they just put the full price like $469 to begin with? Than she said it was stated on the fine print. And yes this was the fine print. I am sorry maybe I am an idiot but when I look at this. I still see $235 a night and a second night FREE!!! This is very disappointing and very misleading. As a hotel that is 5 star and a royal hotel brand that has been around for a very long time. Come on, you don’t need to swoop down this low to get customer through the door.

Engagement that was 10 years in the making, dampened by this experience

We stayed last week at the Fairmont Banff Springs. I had booked this trip as a surprise to my partner for both her 30th birthday as well as our engagement. We have been together for 10 years and I put a lot of planning into making this trip memorable and proposal perfect. I had chosen the Fairmont Banff Springs as I wanted a landmark destination that we could return to for anniversaries for years to come. This started with booking a specific room with specific amenities. Therefore, I did this by calling the reservations line so I could speak in person with an agent and make sure my requests could be accommodated. The reservations agent at that time assured me they could. My plan was to propose as soon as we got there in front of the hotel, then head up to our room where we would have wine, flowers for her and a great view of the mountains to relax and enjoy our afternoon and share the happy news with our parents. Well, I went ahead and proposed to her in front of the hotel and then we headed up to the room. The flowers ordered were there but it was the completely wrong room. Instead of spending the late afternoon relaxing together and calling our family, I found myself distracted, making multiple calls to the front desk to ask to be moved to the room I had booked (and frankly paid for). We were offered another room but in her words “it was a downgrade with a queen bed” from the one we had. I had then asked if I could order champagne to our room and she transferred me to Food and Dining to order it. This is the Fairmont – when they make a mistake they are known for rectifying it immediately, not offering a downgrade. She stated that she would talk to someone and get back to me. I was disappointed with this response and continued checking in with the front desk into the evening by text to see if there was another solution - even while having drinks in the Rundle bar instead of exclusively enjoying our post-engagement bliss. I called again the next day and was told finally that our room was available on Friday - we had arrived on a Wednesday. We were grateful that they could finally move us to the correct room, however Friday was my now fiancés birthday so we spent almost 2 hours in the afternoon on her birthday packing up and moving rooms. It was was not ideal and the last thing she wanted to do after spending the entire morning and early afternoon at the spa (her experience at the spa was however outstanding). The staff in all of the restaurants we had encountered were extremely kind (staff at Castello’s stand out in particular) and really did seem to want to make sure we enjoying ourselves. We were also impressed with all of the COVID guidelines they had in place. The food in all of the restaurants (we exclusively ate at the hotel for our entire stay except one meal) was phenomenal and the views were second to none. There were many things that were memorable about the hotel but I am giving our time there two stars as when I reflect on it, I have an intense sense of disappointment for the response and handling of our room. I waited 10 YEARS and planned carefully for that moment, had chosen the Fairmont Banff Springs and instead of exclusively enjoying that evening and following day, I spent a significant amount of effort and time distracted trying to rectify a situation that the Fairmont should not of let happen in the first place.
