Last year my husband and I stayed at the Iberostar Tucan, in Playa del Carmen - our first time at that hotel, but our 10th time in the Playa del Carmen area. We had a great time - and this year decided to go back to the same resort, but its sister hotel, Iberostar Quetzal. Once again, we had a great time and we applaud Iberostar for its eco efforts. Last year there were no plastic straws available at the resort, and this year there were no straws, but in addition, the bathroom amenities are now all biodegradable, and there were no longer plastic bottles of water, but we were provided with 2 large glass bottles, which we could refill whenever we needed, at a dispenser which was located just outside our room. Like Iberostar Tucan (see my review of there), the Iberostar Quetzal was super clean and very comfortable. Food was amazing and we love that you can eat at either of the buffets and any restaurant, despite which side you are staying in. The lobby and resort staff are friendly and accommodating, and the food was delicious. The buffets were good last year but this year even better. Entertainment is great at this resort. There is often live entertainment outside the lunch buffet restaurant during the lunch hour, and it is nice to have entertainment in the lobby bars each night before the main show as well. Nice to have a drink and unwind after dinner before going to the main show. The quality of the performers and musicians at every show is outstanding, and the entertainment 'leader' who MC's the shows every night is very funny and gets the crowd going. Like last year we loved all the wildlife in the resort. And we found out this year there there are 15 growler monkeys on the resort - we had no idea there were that many. You hear them loudly every now and then, but they never bother you and it's so cool when you see some in the trees. Lots of birds, and smaller animals, and this year even some kittens that would come around the buffet restaurant but were not aggressive, just adorable. The beach is beautiful and I would definitely recommend this resort - as I did the Iberostar Tucan last year. Just be aware that it's not really a 'party' resort. Lots of entertainment, and games throughout the day, but it's not like some hotels down there that are busy, busy, with non-stop activity. A nice in-between resort. Pool is great as is the separate pool bar. The hotel is modern yet maintains a traditional Mexican feel, which is really nice as alot of the hotels along that hotel strip have renovated over the last couple of years, and have lost alot of the atmosphere.

The pool is amazing, but despite signs, people put stuff on the lounge chairs in the wee hours of the morning to reserve them. Getting a lounge chair is for the early birds! Number one complaint by far is the smoking!!! It is rare to find any where where there is someone not smoking! If you have asthma or are allergic, this is not the resort for you. And I find it very contradictory that everyone is Eco friendly, yet the beach is littered with cigarette butts. If you are assigned a room in building 29, you will be awakened every morning at 7 AM by the back up beepers from the delivery trucks at the resort next door. There is no sleeping in. Property is beautiful and the staff is very friendly. Taxi to 5th Avenue was around $7 one way. We loved the wild life and evening entertainment was great.

We returned to Iberostar Quetzal in late January 2020 and enjoyed this visit just as much as we have our previous two visits. We "experimented" with a different room -- the Oceanfront Junior Suite -- and loved it. The view of the ocean from our first-floor patio was beautiful, although somewhat interrupted by beach palapas. Next time we'll try to get a second-floor room. We recognized many staff members from previous visits and made many new friends among the staff. Special thanks to Star Friend Rubi for sharing lunch with us, tennis pro Marco for remembering us, and Star Prestige Lounge host Mario for welcoming us back so warmly. Food was fabulous and plentiful, as always -- we especially enjoyed the Italian restaurant, steakhouse, Mediterranean (try the salt-encrusted dorade for a real treat), and buffets. (Not a fan of the Japanese hibachi restaurant; although the food is tasty, the environment is too noisy for conversation and the stools have no backs, very difficult for someone with a bad back to sit for any length of time.) As was the case with previous visits, the grounds are immaculately maintained and the beach is stunning. Rooms are spacious and kept very clean and inviting by attentive and friendly housekeeping staff. This year's new adventure was parasailing: Fantastic!

Before you book your trip to Playa del Carmen please read this review, I have been there before and this was the worst experience I had on a resort ever. 1- Location: it's a bit outside of Playa del Carmen, on a condo, so every time you need to leave, you need to take a taxi. But the beach was amazing! 2 - foods and drinks: extremely mediocre. Just 1/2 choices of meat on the buffets, not a lot of seafood, the food was very tasteless. The drinks, were those very sugarly ones. Even the restaurants that you need to book upfront are no big deal, we went to the Japanese, the food was pretty much the same as on the buffet, and there was no special decoration. 3 - The area of the hotel is great, there is a lot of green areas, animals walking around. 4 - the bedrooms are very simple, no decorations, local TV channels, no bathtub, the minibar just had drinks, no snacks. 5 - maintenance: since I arrived in the room the key didn't work - I spent so much of my vacations dealing with this, and nothing was done. I called front desk as soon as I arrived and they said they would send somebody, later that day I went to the front desk and requested it to be checked, the next day the same over and over again - and every time I would receive an answer that it was fixed, but every time I would get to my bedroom the problem wasn't fixed - there was a problem in the lock. Every time I wanted to come to the room I had to be waiting for 10-20 min for somebody to come and open the door to me.
