Still An Excellent Resort With Areas of Improvement Needed

I have been coming to this resort since around 2004, and lastly arriving/leaving March 25, 2021. Over the years this and the Sunset Princess have been the BEST resort for the money for families and couples alike. Great restaurants, beautiful grounds are extremely taken care of, which includes the beach area as well. Although COVID has hit all major resorts in this area, all the staff are wearing masks -- staff are cleaning crazy, are always professionally courteous, (with exception of one female employee at the check-in desk -- I'll explain later) and ensuring that every guest has an exceptional time. I wholeheartedly recommend this resort -- and if price is not too much an issue, spring for the platinum accomodations. Francisco and Renee at the Platinum concierge desk were professional, informative, and always helpful. It seems that the Sunset Princess is closed due to COVID restrictions, and everything seems to be handled through the Grand Riviera Princess. These are EXACTLY twin resorts side by side. With COVID, it is very sad to say, that some of the "normal" accomodations and guest offerings that the resort provided to guests have been either suspended or no longer available. Here a just a small sample of "problem" issues that were noted on this March 19-25, 2021, trip: 1) With the requirement of having a COVID-19 test 3 days prior to your flight return to the U.S., the testing medical facility comes to resort and charges a $35.00 USC for each test. Most of the other prestigious resorts are now offering a "complementary" COVID-19 test since they apparently want to have more U.S. business. You'll have to scan the link and sign up for an appointment time on their app. The app states to arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled time. HOWEVER, on our appointment day and time, reservations/appointments were meaningless. Our appointment was scheduled for 9:30, and we arrived at 9:00 a.m. There was ONLY 1 female nurse taking all information down (be sure to bring your passport) and giving the test. By the time we finished in the "line," with other "appointments," it was well over 1 hour. This is no way to handle these tests for guests. The other negative impact was this resort used to provided free bus transportation to Playa in the morning, and free pickup in the afternoon/evening. But blaming COVID, they unfortunately no longer offer that wonderful service. But yet, if you ride the property tram from the lobby to the platinum rooms, they can be full and everyone is wearing a mask. Management needs to bring this service back ASAP! Another negative impact is that the swim-up bars are "partly" open. You may sit on the pool bar stool and order a beverage wearing your mask or they will not serve you, but you are not allowed to sit at the pool bar to enjoy your beverage. You cannot visit or drink at the pool bars. Yet all the buffets, restaurants, are thankfully getting busy once again, with guests walking and drinking inside with and without masks while eating. What's the difference? Open up the pool bar seating and allow consumption at the pool bars!! And if necessary, social distance between each pool bar seat. Another negative impact that guests at the platinum in past years can or could make all their dinner reservations upon their arrival with the concierge, who would provide the guests party with restaurant vouchers with the name of the restaurant, date and seating time. Again, blaming COVID, everything now supposedly is done with an app for reservations. However, with the limited weak WIFI on the grounds, management should remember that all guests are NOT millennials, and smart technology is definitely not their strong suit. Management should consider an immediate return to the paper vouchers for guests that prefer that over the app. Give guests the choice! Another negative impact was an excellent selling point for platinum guests, was the ability to use computers and printers, check emails, in their lobby. However, the computers apparently contracted mole for lack of use and heat damage, and were never replaced. Concierge's are busy printing and checking your emails due to the poorly WIFI on the property unless you want to pay extra for WIFI. Airlines still were requiring a printed copy of your negative COVID test as well as the PDF sent to your email. I unfortunately had to cut my 8 day 7 night trip short by one day. Since I already paid for the trip in advance for that duration, I was NOT looking for a one (1) day refund. However, at the MISO restaurant (excellent I might add) now charges a $15.00 USC option for shrimp with main course if you want it. (They never used to charged for shrimp in the past) When I checked out the day early, this one very RUDE desk clerk (Angeles) informed me of the $30.00 shrimp restaurant charge. I asked her politely since I was leaving a day early, and the resort would be getting paid in full for the original 8 days booked, and I was only getting 7 days for what I initially paid, I figured that would be natural "wash!" To the contrary, she was extremely rude and said you "MUST pay it or you will not get cleared to leave." I immediately asked for a supervisor. She informed me that NO supervisor was available until after 9:00 am. So apparently there is NO one in charge at the reservation desk if you check out before 9:00 am. I wanted to remember who she was, so I attempted to photograph her name tag, because I have NEVER dealt with anyone at the resort that rude over the years I have been there. She dang near literally tore her name tag off her blouse and slammed it on the counter so I could snap the photo. Since I was on a deadline of departing the resort at 8:45 am, I reluctantly paid the $30.00, to receive my release voucher for the luggage bellman. Now, I know these negative comments may sound worse than they are. In some instances, management needs to take better actions and use common sense when it comes to over using the COVID theme. Appointment times should be strictly followed and not keeping guests waiting for over 1 hour past their scheduled time. Management can and should immediately re-store some of the amentites immediately that have outlined here for returning guests, Swim up bar seating, etc. I guess if it's your first time, you'll never know what you've missed if you haven't experienced it yet. All in all, it is still a fabulous resort with great restaurants, buffets, and 99.9999% of their entire staff -- save one! I will not let one bad apple spoil the pie! You WILL enjoy your stay -- especially at the platinum, even with these restrictions. You really can't go wrong. Thanks for reading/listening!

It was our 5th time to the Grand Princess. Usually we stay on the Sunset side but it was closed during COVID. Both sides are exactly the same so it was not a big deal for us. The only thing that was disappointing was the fact that the Sports Bar was closed. But we did have 24 hour room service. All of the employees were WONDERFUL and they went out of their way during COVID cleaning and sanitizing!! We felt complete safe. Can not wait to get back!!!

I was fortunate enough to stay in the Platinum Suites of Riviera Princess upon my second visit to the resort, and trust me when I say, this place truly is something! Due to the pandemic and travel bans in the US, I was required to spend 2 weeks in Mexico to be able to visit my fiancé. There was only one option for my place of stay and this was the place. It has everything, even during a pandemic. I want to start by saying, this place would not be the same without the staff. Each and every staff member I had the pleasure of meeting worked hand and foot to make the stay as special as it could be. I cannot put into words how special the people of this place are. They will accommodate your every need, work tirelessly to make things right, and always give you a very pleasant welcoming (even by name). You will have staff serve you wherever you are in the resort. Staff serve you drinks around the pool, on the beach, in the lobby, and they provide the best service. You don’t need to move, just enjoy your stay (although it’s good to sometimes, I can’t be lazy all day!). I cannot appreciate the people at this place enough, they’re truly one of a kind! The rooms are big, with very clean bathrooms and a great sized bed. It has a private beach including a Platinum area with soft beds, including double beds. Facilities are endless. There are multiple bars and restaurants, which were still open when the resort was empty. A bar on the beach, multiple swim-ups, multiple buffets, a number of a la cartes (the food is absolutely fantastic), a sports bar, and even a nightclub. There are so many facilities to keep you busy! The selection of food at this resort is very impressive. You have the buffets which cover breakfast, lunch and dinner. On top of the buffets for lunch, you have a taco bar which is muy bien, serving different meat. The taco bar is my favourite, I often skipped lunch for the tacos. There is also a beach snack bar, serving nachos, burgers, hot dogs and fries. The burgers at this place were also pretty good, I just wanted to feel good and expected the tacos to be healthier. Then you have the a la cartes for dinner, which are a complete variety. Grill, Italian, Asian, Mexican, and International to note. Each night the food was fantastic and the portions are a great size, you won’t leave hungry! This place is clean, even more so during a pandemic. I didn’t spot a staff member without a mask. There are hand sanitisers everywhere, literally anywhere you go. Rooms are cleaned daily, reserved rooms are sanitised, food served to you, so no concerns of other peoples germs. This place genuinely is Covid free! I have to finish off by saying my best wishes go out to Martin in the Platinum lobby, Farello at the swim up bar, and Lupita at the pool / beach bar. All of the staff have my full respect, the work they do is not appreciated enough. However, if you’re ever lucky enough to meet Martin, Farello, or Lupita, you’ll understand my well wishes. Martin ensured my room and stay was perfect. Any need I had for the resort he would be onto in a flash, firsthand. He would go beyond any need. Farello and Lupita are first class around the pool serving drinks. Neither of these two would leave me thirsty. They worked tirelessly to cater my needs, knew my orders, and had hearts of gold. I will certainly be back, and I cannot wait to be reunited with the staff, these 3 in particular! Thank you to all of the Riviera Princess team, keep being you!

    Nirvana State of Mind

It is rare when a resort’s accommodations, amenities and services provide guests a unique sense of “nirvana state of mind" but this is exactly the idyllic state we experienced during a recent stay. We've visited the resort several times and find its allure fascinating. This time, we stayed in an incredible swim-out suite which allowed us the inimitable convenience of stepping from the room into the pool to take a dip when the urge hit, while “lazing away” the days enjoying free-flowing drinks as part of the all-inclusive plan. Similarly, we enjoyed the gastronomical appeal of its many restaurants. The breakfast and lunch buffets are excellent and for dinner the specialty restaurants offer a variety of international scrumptious cuisines. Regardless where we dined, the ambience was always pleasant and the service exceptional. This stay confirmed again that quality guest services is an integral part of the culture at the resort. Many of the staff went out of their way to make us feel special. To name a few, we want to recognize Raymundo and Eddy of the concierge desk for their constant attention, and from the Riviera Restaurant, Roberto, for striving to make our dining experience magnificent, Chef Chic, for the special dessert he prepared for my husband and I on our last day, and Dora, who presented me with a handcrafted rose. For us, this destination is conducive to how we like to vacation. It appeals to our senses and with every visit our desire to return grows deeper.

My family enjoyed a 2 week vacation here. I gave it 5 stars for the price. You get way more than what you pay for. If I had paid 5 star prices, I would have given it a 4/5 stars. We loved being pampered by the staff, the pools were clean and lovely, the drinks and food good. The resort is at less than 10% capacity and the entire Sunset side is closed. The resort is constantly doing repairs to the buildings and pools, but I didn’t find it an annoyance. The staff is exceptionally COVID concerned! Everyone wore an eye covering (glasses or shield) and a mask, I didn’t see an employee’s face once! As a guest you are expected to wear one at the desk and in dinning places unless at your table. I felt more safe here than at the grocery store at home!! There was more than enough precautions and if you needed extra space there is an entirely vacant section of beach on the closed side of the resort. The resort has an app that is quite useful. It allows you to make and cancel your dinner reservations and see what events are going on. We chose this resort solely based on the children’s splash pad, pool zone and we were not disappointed! Our 2 1/2 year old would spend hours going round and round on the slides. There is a large bucket that fills with water and dumps every 7-9 minutes, to every child’s delight. During COVID, there were NEVER more than two families here (not a restriction) at the same time. There was always a life guard posted. My only complaint about this area is the bathrooms are a 4 minute walk, which was cumbersome for my newly potty trained toddler. The pools were delightful! Not all of the pools are available but more than enough!! There is a main large pool next to the platinum buffet (the only buffet open at this time). It has very attentive bartenders at the swim up bar. The platinum swimming pool was spectacular!! Small, and intimate with luxurious queen, thickly padded beds, under Cabanas. You have your own platinum bar tender here. The staff quickly get to know you and won’t let your drink go dry! You MUST have Charl-ye make you a mojito here!! The best of my life!! O’ and get morning lattes and green juice here!! My parents joined us for 3 nights and they got a swim out room which was a huge treat! I wish I would have asked for a swim out room with the platinum package. I tried to book it that way and was unable to find it online. The beach is delightful! I appreciate the smell of seaweed so it didn’t bother me in the slightest. The resort cleans the beach of seaweed every morning with a really cool tractor and trailer, but during the day more accumulates. The platinum beach section is prime!! The chairs lovely and generously padded. However, the staff to refill your drinks or provide towels are inconsistent. Grab a towel somewhere else before you get there. There is a nice bar, bathroom and restaurant on the beach. If you like a good mojito tell them here, no lime juice, otherwise it is an attack of sour! I wasn’t a fan of the food there, but it was your basic burger, hot dog, chips and french fries. The beach entertainment staff are superb!! If 3 people start to play volleyball, they will jump in and play with you!! Making it more of a game! They have fun kid games, crafts and activities that my son really enjoyed. The beach vendors mostly weren’t pushy and I was surprised at how few there were! However, the non-resort massage ladies are relentless! There are 2 competing massage places, blue vs pink shirts, and it’s about a 10 minute walk down the beach. They may be kind of tedious in there sales, but they give excellent massages $20 for 70 minutes!! There is only one buffet open and it is the Riviera Platinum Buffet, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. When you find a server you want, request them over and over! We had Marciella and we were spoiled!! Every morning when she saw us, she had a high chair on the way for my son, 2 green juices, latte, 2 mimosas and milk heading to our table! Then lunch she would save me a glass of green juice from breakfast!! My favorite food here was a freshly prepared omelette and lunch cooked vegetables and fajita style meats. The Al-Acart restaurants were good, some great things and others good. Miso was my favorite and only open 2 nights a week right now. It is a hibachi style grill with a set menu. Sushi, fried rice (amazing), vegetables, fish, steak, chicken, and dessert. The other restaurants are good, just make sure to ask for what you want and they are so good. The steak had a weird texture for my American tongue and realized I needed to order medium instead of medium rare. Also they are providing QR codes instead of menus for Covid concerns, we just asked for a paper menu every time. The shows are good. Moana was my sons ABSOLUTE favorite! My husband and I really enjoyed the break dancers. This isn’t broadway, but lip syncing to good old favorites and they do a good job. The shuttle’s/ golf carts are usually consistent during dinner time but otherwise you could find yourself waiting up to 15 minutes if you didn’t call for a ride. We always took the shuttle from Platinum to the kids zone. Our favorite driver was Fernando, he had a jolly demeanor and very melodic English. The cleaning staff was amazing and quick!! We did have a problem with mold growing on some of our items, ESPECIALLY our sons CAR SEAT!! But when I asked the room cleaners for supplies to clean it myself he wouldn’t hear of it and scrubbed it down himself (This was Rafael, he was great!). This had to be done 2 times! Be sure to make sure anything wet airs out to prevent mold growing in this moist environment! Our concierge was wonderful!! Zuriel handled our every need! I did find it odd that the resort would not provide a stool for my son to be able to reach the toilet. I was told they were unavailable even though the Family rooms have them AND the Family rooms are not open. If you have the Platinum package you schedule your COVID test with your concierge and take it at the resort. It took about 30 minutes, cost $60 pp and we had the paperwork to come home the next day. The wifi was good for a Mexico hotel, but randomly you are asked to write a review. I think the first and last day. Be sure you get everything completed without your screen shutting off, otherwise you won’t be asked again!! Why is this a problem?? You may accidentally leave a bad review by the shutdown. I accidentally said my service was bad at check in and it wasn’t bad at all! In fact the opposite! They kept calling to ensure I had everything I needed!! We really enjoyed the wildlife. The Coatis are adorable, but will definitely steal a banana from you bag if its an option! The cats on the property are friendly for the most part and we were sad we never saw the monkeys or the Crocodile. And the seagulls are ruthless at the beach if you have a plate of food from the beach bar. The bugs were not bad at. My son did end up with 4 mystery bites (maybe beach ants??) and my mother who slept outside had bites as well. Overall this is still Mexico and the standards of tipping, bartering and saying NO still apply. We can’t wait for our next trip to see what a Full resort looks like!!
