April Getaway to Sandals Montego Bay

Ron C (Toronto, Canada) on May 04, 2024

Travel from Toronto to Sandals Montego Bay Our trip was from April 19th to April 26th, 2024 to Sandals Montego Bay. This was our first trip to this resort but we have been to other Sandals resorts. Travel through Airport Flight down was ok from Toronto. Due to a strike, there was no food served on the flight besides pretzels and drinks. Getting through the airport was simple. We applied for the online immigration form for Jamaica before leaving but only got a notice that it was accepted. No confirmation. They did not hand out paper forms on the plane. There were lots of QR codes to apply and we found out that is all we needed. You will scan your passport on a machine, get a weird picture then gather your luggage. Getting our luggage was quick and getting through the final Customs inspection was quick. About 20 minutes from plane to Sandals lounge. We were barely in the lounge to grab a drink and snack before heading to the bus. It was only 3 couples on the bus and 10 minutes drive to the resort. Arrival We were greeted with the cool towel and escorted to the Club Sandals lounge. We did the online check- in so we had no forms to fill out. We were given a drink and a little explanation for what we can expect. With arrival before 3 PM, we could not go to our room, so we went to the Jerk Shack for some lunch. Around 3PM, we came to get our keys to our room. We were escorted to RM 203. Nice room but looks out to the roof of Tokyo Jo’s. We were told our bags were brought to our room but one problem, they were not in our room. They didn’t know where they put them. Fortunately, my wife noticed 205 written on the tags so they checked the room and our bags were there. Fortunately, no one was in that room. We requested to stay in that room since the view improved (can see more of the ocean), our bags were already there and no one was booked for that room. They agreed with some prodding. Room We were in the Oceanfront Honeymoon Club Level Room w/ Balcony Tranquility Soaking Tub (OFT). The room was nice. Not super big. The bathroom was spacious and the shower was large. The closet had lots of hangers and the safe was large enough to hold all our items. It was big enough to hold a couple of laptops if necessary. The room was cleaned every day. The turn down service was around 6:30ish every day. Most days there were inspirational cards on the bed. The fridge was not always restocked each day. We had to ask some days to get it restocked. Don’t know why it wasn’t, considering we walked past the people who were restocking the rooms. Since we are not big alcohol or beer drinkers, we asked for more water, juice and pop. The water were large glass bottles that were filled each day with stickers of the day on it. We like to drink some milk (yes, milk) in the evenings or for the wife’s tea and the Club Sandals group got us a couple of boxes during the week. The balcony was spacious to sit out on and watch people pass by or a wedding. It was a nice place to sit and read in the evening as the sun went down before dinner. Dining We tried as many restaurants as we could. We had a plan when we came but that just went out the window when we arrived. Our best meal was Bayside (French). The food was very flavourful and tasted the best. We had a nice table on the outside deck. We went to Tokyo Jo’s twice. The appetizers are good and the main were ok. Doesn’t matter what vegetables or proteins you added, the spices and sauces were that same for each meal. Cucina Romana was ok for dinner and a great view for breakfast. The Jerk Shack was the place to go for lunch. You are in Jamaica, you should eat jerk chicken or pork. The pizza at Dino’s, the burgers and quesadillas at Mariner’s were good. Soy restaurant were fine except they ran out of shrimp and avocado for the sushi. We went in the later part of the evening so supplies ran out. Kind of weird. Butch’s was a hard reservation to get and a bit of a disappointment. The rime rib was not very good but the filet mignon was very good. Stewfish was nice and the food was tasty. I visited Café de Paris for snacks and ice cream. The ice cream was good and had a different flavour than what we have here. Last day, I find out they do milkshakes. The crepes are good and great for a light snack instead for Mariners or Dino’s pizza. We didn’t go to Cricketeers. For breakfast, we usually went to Bayside for the buffet. We tried the a la carte breakfast at Cucina Romana. Except for the view, it wasn’t outstanding. The buffet had the usuals of eggs, bacon, cereals, pancakes, French toast and breads, with the occasional change up food of fish or vegetables. There are only so many options for breakfast. They do make fresh smoothies to order. We only went to the buffet once for lunch and it was pretty good. The fruit at the buffet was very juicy. Property The property was very nice and a good size. We would walk the property each morning and it is an easy walk. Mostly flat and people who may have mobility issues, this property is good to get around. The beach was good. There was some seagrass to watch for but there were lots of sandy areas. There were floats on the water for people to use. Just watch for the first foot of the water as there is a quick drop. The water was always warm and with the breeze, it was warmer in the water. Sometimes getting chairs under a palapa was difficult. Some people had butlers reserve chairs for them and they also had a chair in the sun. We usually found a spot under one of the trees if you moved some chairs. They were doing some renovations on the property, especially after the storms in February. The wedding chapel and beach cabanas were closed. Some rooms were being repaired and painted. The outside of the Beachfront Village was being stuccoed. This did not interfere with the guests and were not noisy. These workers worked very long hours. The only noise and inconvenience were the last day when they brought dump trucks with sand on to the beach at the east end. Off Property We visited Sandals Royal Caribbean a couple of times. We visited the island for lunch and walked the property. SRC is a much smaller property than SMB. Still a nice property. We used the shuttle from SMB and SRC which was a quick transport. We used the shuttle to go to Ironshore, the area in front of SRC. We walked to the shopping center on the corner. There are some gift shops to buy shirts, jewelry, knick Knacks and other touristy items. If you miss your KFC, BK, DQ or Pizza Hut, they have shops there too. Don’t freak out about the tourism warning, we were fine and were not really bothered by people trying to sell you stuff. Keep your head up and watch your surroundings, you will be fine. We did the Rafting on Martha Brae River excursion. We were picked up in the main lobby by Hilly Billy and taken to the river after a couple of stops at other resorts. Hilly Billy pointed out some points of interest, like the crocodile farm used in the James Bond movie and Usain Bolt’s old high school. On our day, a cruise ship was also in Falmouth so the rafting trip was busy. We waited for our turn to go. We were given a drink of fruit punch. Any more to drink requires you to purchase. There were some vendors selling snacks and shirts. Eventually we were escorted down to the rafts and were placed on the rafts, 2 people each. The ride starts a little fast because of the shallow rapids but the water gets deeper and the water is slower. The raft ‘captain’ has to pole harder now. Depending on the ‘captain’ you get, they will point out some of the things about Jamaica river, history and plants. We did not get one of those ‘captains’. The ride is very quiet in spaces that you could hear a pin drop or some woodpecker hammering a tree. The view is nice and enjoyable. The ride is about an hour. The end of the ride has a little gift shop and restaurant if you want something while waiting for the rest of your bus group to arrive. Shout out to Hilly Billy. Hilly Billy makes sure he has all the same people he arrived with when he leaves. We are dropped back at our resort around 3PM. The trip only lasted so long because of the wait for a raft but the view at the raft site was very pretty. Leaving Jamaica We checked out from our room with no problems. We were taken to the airport at 9:45 for a 12:50 flight. Our check in at the counter was quick with limited people in the line up. Security screening was about normal and lots of lines to process people. Once you get through security, you walk though the gauntlet called the Duty-Free store. You can buy your alcohol, perfume, coffee or candy there or you can go farther in the airport to another duty-free store where there is no line up. The price of the alcohol at the duty-free store is cheaper than some stores in Montego Bay. There are some restaurants to grab something to eat. Be prepared for lines, especially for American fast food. Lots of planes are leaving around the same time (midday) so be prepared for crowds, especially near your gate. The experience of going through Sangster’s airport was pretty easy.

On my way home from Sandals Montego Bay, we have been to many Sandals and all have been great, but the people here and our Butler David Love made this trip feel like royalty. We were oceanside by Latitudes close to the party pool. This resort has something for everyone and if you want to be pampered request David as your Butler. Can’t wait to return.
