First time in Portland for me - I stayed in the Heathman on the 10th floor in a beautifully renovated bright and stylish room. Every interaction was kind and super friendly, no task to large and they just want you to feel good and well taken care of. I liked the towels and asked if i could purchase 2 - guess what the Head of Housekeeping Michael does... he met me at the lobby and got me two brand new towels and said compliments of the house! Please come and stay with us again. How lovely is that? Monday morning never got better!

I just stayed at the Heathman Hotel this last weekend. It was my first time to Portland (city is amazing), and I had high hopes for this hotel as it seems customer service here is spoken very highly about. I payed for my package through Expedia, and was well aware that I would be charged a resort fee at check-in which is totally ok. After checking in, I get an alert from my bank account that I was charged 519$. Surprised, I go back to the desk to figure out what happened, and a different hotel clerk is there now. She tells me that is some sort of security/insurance fee of 100 per day in case anything should happen. I was shocked, what sort of hotel PRE-charges their guests for damage that has not even happened, and to be quite honest, it really makes me feel as a customer that I am not trusted upon check in. Not only did the previous attendant not tell me anything at all about that charge, the girl standing in front of me offered no apology, no smile, nothing after I expressed my concerns that at the LEAST I should have been informed about it before being charged. And to my surprise I turn around and there is the original clerk who helped me upon check in, looking nervous in the corner. He also offers no apology to me even as we take the same elevator back up with him to our room. It’s insane to think guests here are charged so much extra up front, when that money could have been used for food and experiences during my stay in Portland. Also, I haven’t even been refunded the money yet after checking out. Really disappointed with the secret charges and service here. I love Portland and I’ll be back, but at a different hotel.

The Cultural Heart of the City

The Heathman is home base for us: located in the heart of the city, directly adjacent to the Oregon Symphony, home to Headwaters Restaurant. Most of all, we’re welcomed by the staff. Every single one, from doormen to waitstaff to the desk folk all show their connection to guests. They rejoice in our pleasure at the musical performances, they prepare our food and drink to please us, and they truly care about satisfying us in every way. I’m a fan.

Very good location, internal hotel problems

The staff was very pleasant and helpful. The location is very good, as you step out the door you are within walking distance to great shops and restaurants. Upon arrival the first thing we noticed was the room toilet had a malfunctioning flapper. I must say the bathroom was the smallest I had ever encountered in a hotel. The door passed the toilet by about 1 1/2 inches. No way could 2 people be in this bathroom at the same time. No one would ever steal their towels as they were thin and felt like sandpaper. No luxury towels here. One of the two elevators in the hotel was broken. For 2 days of our stay we were awakened to the sounds of drills and talking workmen working on the elevator. Not exactly the way you want to wake up. We had good meals in the restaurant. I would not choose to stay here again.

The Heathman Hotel was a wonderful surprise of architectural splendor. Every decorative detail was well-thought out. It was a treasure for the eyes. Next door is the Portland Symphony. Even though the sign's bright lights are big, the hotel rooms have black out blinds so that you can have a quiet sleep. The rooms were also beautifully decorated, clean and large. The study is filled with signed books from authors who have stayed there. Nearby the hotel is one of only rivers in the world which travel south to north (the other is the Nile in Egypt). A delightful stay.
