Booked a "suite" at the Marmara, nonsmoking floor. The suite was very tired. Carpeting very dirty. Smelled like smoke. They offered to bring a machine up to take the smoke smell out but we were too tired. The suite was very large and was inexpensive. You get what you pay for. 2 elevators for a 30 story building, one of which was out the entire stay. Elevator wait 10 minutes at times. Summary: cheap, not terribly clean, needs renovation. Bed was comfortable. A lot of space for the price. We chose a different hotel for our next visit a few weeks later.

We have been staying at the Marmara for many years. We have found the rooms to be uniformly clean, spacious, and well-appointed. The views from the higher floors are breathtaking. The staff are capable and courteous. We particularly enjoy sipping a glass of wine as the sun sets over the city, and waking up in the morning and watching the city come to life from our room. These are experiences that we will always treasure. The location is stellar. On one occasion we took the Q train (right outside the hotel's door) all the way to Coney Island. To accomplish this for the price of a subway ticket is one of the world's best bargains. We can not wait to return.

We were two couples and we stayed from Dec27 to Jan3 on the west side, 8th floor with balcony single bedroom. My overall impression was very good so I will start with CONS first so the close the review on a positive. CONS: -Price for this room over this time was twice the normal but not sure why as a week starting the 31st was much less. - This room was EXTREMELY noisy in the bedroom but quieter in the living room. All the noise was from the street and seemed to be related to buses hitting a bump in the 2nd Ave. and construction on neighboring buildings which seemed to start at 6AM and noise did not die down until 1am. - Much of the noise seemed to leak through the AC unit under the window. - The NW corner of the bedroom seemed to be a pipe chase for the heat going to all floors. The room was much to warm with temps outside above 40F and the heat turned OFF! In fact the wall in that corner was hot. We were only comfortable by opening the window all night until going to sleep. - The rooms were not worn out but had plenty of wear in some locations. The windows were internally fogged up and needed replacement as they were always dirty in appearance. There was some stains and light damage to some furnishings but all in all it was acceptable considering prices of competitive locations. PROS: - Staff was excellent, especially Jon and Matt. They gave candid suggestions about where to eat locally and Matt had good knowledge of food over reputation of restaurants. - Anything we needed was provided and instantly. We needed additional towels and missing kitchen utensils which showed up within minutes. - We were told when making reservations that we would not have room makeup except once a week but it came everyday and we seldom needed it. Room service personnel were excellent and very friendly. Towels and bath amenities were high quality. Shower excellent with no shortage of hot water or pressure. - The location is excellent! Walk out the hotel and your on the Q train that goes all the way down Manhattan and as far as the ocean in Brooklyn! When you get on the train to head downtown you are the only ones as it starts at this location and the entire 2nd Ave Subway system is new with new stations and cars. - There are excellent restaurants within walking distance but ask staff as there are a few lemons close by. - There is a grocery store within two short blocks that has everything including gourmet items and they have great sales that change daily. Prices are reasonable with a slight NYC premium...dairy high! - Everything we needed to cook our own meals was there in the kitchen and I loved the pans which did a great job...not some crusty scratched up teflon crap but great stainless quality cookware. I wanted to take the skillet home! The skillet cooked better than my ALCLAD! - The balcony was a nice touch and the room layout was perfect for 4. I suspect we got this room as we were 4 and paid for 4. Well worth it. Privacy from living room sleepers when going from bedroom to bath. If staying 4 in the room then make sure you get a balcony which is what makes this layout. - Flat screen TVs in each room and great wifi (wifi repeaters are at each end of the the corridor that faces the elevator. No cable but just local stations so bring your Roku stick. Some slowness of wifi in evening on rainy days as I think more residents stay at home. - Walking the streets after dark for blocks was safe and comfortable. Try a walk along the East river in the park next to Gracie Mansion. - Best Neapolitan pizza or Italian was 5 min walk to San Matteo but get there early as it is Small and cozy. Suggestions for NYC: -NYC is a noisy place to visit and the last week of December is a waste of money. The lines due to security at all places of interest were 3-4 hours long. The are some short cuts but I will post them with reviews of attractions. - If you here for a week get a 7 days MTA card, which also works on buses. But don’t get it until the day after arrival if you want to use it the last day as passes expire at midnight. - The M15 bus runs north and south on 2nd Ave and is a great way to stay on the East side (up to Costco or down to the lower East Side) and you can use it with your MTA card. The Express buses (real nice inside like a tour bus) are not included on your card but one driver lets us on and the card worked on his machine. - Do not buy one of those passes to see many attractions at a discount like the NYC-pass, City-pass, etc. First you will find that you need to exchange your pass ticket for a real ticket at some locations and the lines are long. You will not get to see everything in the time allotted, thus, spending the same amount of money as buying normal tickets. If available, like Statue of Liberty, get a reserve ticket on line and print it! Our experience was 30 minutes wait on reserve line and 3 hours on flex line! Also, it seems the week we were there those passes contributed to the creation of those long lines of thousands...YES Thousands in line! In the rain, no less! - Search out the small family owned local restaurants with ethic food and save your appetite for steak until you get our of NY! We found meals well known but mid-range restaurants were $150 for four with no drinks bit including tip. In summary, I will be happy to return in the off season but only if I can arrange to get on the East side of the building at a higher floor. I am a night person so after 7 days of short nights due to the street noise I was ready to get home and catch up on my sleep. The staff makes this place get it’s stars!i

We stayed at the Marmara Manhattan for Christmas and New Years. There were 4 of us and we booked a 1 bedroom apartment that had a pullout sofa and we all fit comfortably in the hotel for the 10 days we were there. There were some great aspects of the hotel but there were also some bad aspects that we encountered during our stay. Pros: - Decent sized apartment for New York City - Room has a fully equity kitchen and you save a lot of money eating in and storing left overs in the fridge provided - All of the staff are extremely friendly and always greet you as you enter/exit the hotel - The views from the balcony are great - Plenty of storage space for clothes and suitcases - The lobby is a little dated but I enjoyed it as it was great for photos and gave it a more old school New York feel - The neighbourhood is great and the food options/shops around the hotel are fantastic with so many different options (rays pizza is a must) - The subway is literally right next door Cons: - The biggest con for us was the fact that we had booked a 1 bedroom apartment with a sofa bed for the simple fact that there was 4 of us. The hotel was made aware when we booked that there was 4 people. However when we got to the hotel the sofa bed had no sheets, blankets or pillows. We called straightaway and were advised they would try to sort something out. Day 2 we called again and were told the same thing. Day 3 of having no blankets pillows or sheets for the sofa bed, we once again called and this time they came up with a very thin blanket that was more like a throw (it is winter in New York in December and a throw is in no way warm enough). We once again called and were told that it is a full house so they may not be able to find a blanket (how there would no spare blankets in a hotel is something I still don’t understand). Finally on the night of day 3 we received a blanket for the sofa bed. We were extremely disappointed as this was something so simple and it was a very uncomfortable first few days as there was 4 people sharing around 1 blanket in winter. - During our stay 1 of the elevators was out of service so the whole hotel only had 1 elevator for all guests and staff so it was an extremely long wait to get up to the room or down to the lobby as we were on the 24th floor - The rooms are a bit run down and could do with a renovation If we had of received the blanket the first night of our stay I would have rated this whole a 5 as we did enjoy our stay overall and I would recommend based on the above pros.

Great location, large rooms sizes and great staff - but really run down

The Marmara could be so much more. The staff are great, the location is terrific especially now with the Q train below the building. The rooms are big and draw in lots of light with big windows to give you a real feel for NYC and how the locals live. However the rooms are very tired. Stained carpets and blinds, one lift was out of action over Christmas. The room we stayed in needed a major refurb with damaged furniture, cupboards and bathrooms. I hope the owners spend the money that is needed.
