Wonderful Stay But Needs Some Improvements

We just returned from our stay at this resort, and have the following comments: Pros - Beautiful grounds - Multiple pools - Excellent customer service - Right next to The Shops at Wailea - Excellent food Humble Kitchin - Mask compliance was pretty good - Mandara Spa massage and facial was superpricey but excellent. Molly for the Fire/Ice massage was especially good. Cons - Lots of people on Tripadvisor have complained about this, and it's a big problem. Guests are placing towels at the adult pool starting at 6 am and hogging it for most of the day. If I'm paying $43 for the resort fee, I'd be pissed with having to compete for seating so early in the AM and no ability to access it in the afternoon. Ritz Carlton Bacara had a reservation system for AM and PM slots, and I think that's the way to go so everyone has a fair chance at the seating. - $700+/night or a gajillion poins for ok size rooms. I know demand is currently sky high, but the rooms are just average so the value is not that good. -

    Better than expected!

I booked this hotel and then got super nervous reading the reviews that were being posted as we got closer to our trip date. Luckily, everything was much better than I anticipated and we really enjoyed our stay! Grounds were beautiful and didn't feel very crowded in general. Pools looked nice (a bit crowded - this is definitely where the action was), but I'm not a pool person so I never went in them. There were a couple times that I wanted to lay on a lounge chair for 30 min or so and that was no problem. They have a lot of different types of seating options and we had no trouble finding one. If you're picky it could be an issue, as I noticed all the prime spots were occupied early in the AM. The hotel is in between two beaches, and we had a lot of fun snorkeling in the mornings at the smaller one (Ulua). There is no "beach" immediately in front of the hotel, just lots of lava rocks and the ocean - but you can see turtles swimming right up to the shore! We stayed in an Ocean View Suite, and it was really nice to have a lot of extra space. The room was in Hale 1, which was convenient because it's close to the lobby, but the building was a bit dark and felt dated. I'm not sure if the other buildings are like that. The room itself felt like a Marriott with some Hawaii touches. The bathroom was fine, but the shower was tiny and the door barely cleared the toilet. Water pressure was average, but not great. It could really use a handheld wand to make up for the lacking pressure. Having the extra 0.5 bathroom was great, though. They also accommodated our (super) late check out request, which was so nice and basically gave us an extra day in Maui before our late flight. They have an arrivals/departures lounge, too, where you can shower if you can't check in early or out late. This is such a great feature and I wish more hotels would do this so that you can spend your last day at the beach and still clean up before your flight. The staff was extremely friendly, which surprised me since I did not expect personable service at a huge hotel in Wailea. Everyone was great, from the receptionist to the bellhop to the pool bar staff and the pool attendants. This really elevated our stay and made me feel welcome. I was expecting to be treated like a piggy bank and this was not the case at all. Food was better than expected, but nothing to write home about. We ordered poke and a salad at the pool one day, and it was pretty good. We had the breakfast at Humble Market Kitchin a couple of times and it was fine. I wouldn't pay those prices for that food, but it came with the room and the convenience was nice when necessary. My only complaint was the check in process. I felt like I didn't get much info about the resort at all, other than where our room was located. I only knew there was a beach activities desk because of all the research I did ahead of time. They didn't tell me that breakfast was included with our room rate, so we found out accidentally on day 3 when we decided to check out the hotel breakfast for the first time. I know there is a fitness center and spa and other things from reviews, but had no idea where they were. If I had wanted to use any of the facilities, I would have found out, but I would have appreciated a bit more info upon check in since the resort was huge. Also, make sure to automatically tack on another $78/day to the room rate for the resort fee and parking. Hate these hidden fees, but that seems to be the norm in Maui. Overall, we had a great stay and would return. I would recommend this hotel as a base for doing all the activities in Maui.

Beautiful hotel with many amenities; Malia made our stay

Pros: + Front-desk staff: Malia at the front desk went above and beyond to help us upgrade to a lovely room for our anniversary. She was so kind and helpful, even suggesting we go to and rest in the original room while they prepared our upgrade. Really made our trip special. The front desk staff overall provide a lovely greeting with leis, drinks, and a complimentary mai tai. + Beautiful views from ocean view rooms and the pools. The ocean-front path is just lovely. + Good food on-site + Ability to self-book activities like yoga and Hawaiian cultural classes before arrival through the QR code. The app itself is a little clunky. + Fun water slide (even for adults), nice hot tubs, gorgeous pools. + Lovely hospitality room where you can shower and change after checking out, before your flight. + The Starbucks is so convenient! Improvements: - The beach activities desk has a good package, but limited hours. They close at 3, but require all equipment to be back by 2:30, so stop renting before then. Kayaks are even more limited. We showed up at 8:30 one morning and were told they were all out. We went right when they opened at 8 and were told they couldn't rent kayaks until after 8:45, which was frustrating. - Availability is limited for app-booked activities, like yoga, but there's no way to cancel and release your spot if you can't go. - The best seats at the pools are reserved for $400-$500 a day, which is disappointing given how much you're paying to stay. Many days these went completely unused. - There's a great luau onsite but we were told it's completely booked up through May (we stayed in mid/end of April). Wish they had reserved some spots or reached out ahead of time. So if you're reading this, book early! - Could be better about sustainability (we hung our towels to dry but they were still replaced each day and they had single-use plastic shampoos)

My fiance and I stayed at the hotel in March and it exceeded our expectations. The pools and grounds were beautiful! The adult infinity pool was a highlight of the trip, you can watch the sunset and the whales breach while relaxing in the pool. The beach where you can rent beach chairs via the Marriott was ok and a little tight. I would recommend checking out Makena beach about 15 minutes down the road. Overall a beautiful hotel in a great area, definitely a lot of kids but that is to be expected when there are many activities and pools that cater to families. I would recommend this hotel and would return!

First off, I would give 5 stars but I remove one for the deceptive resort fee. With that said my stay was very relaxing and worry free. The staff is exceptional and go out of their way to make you feel welcome and appreciated. Keep in mind that they have also been through a pandemic and have not been able to work for a year and Maui is a very expensive place to live. I also want to clear up some misconceptions about the resort that other reviewers commented on as well as some tips for a great stay. Reading those reviews made me a little anxious to go and instead I had a great experience. I have stayed here multiple times and the chair situation at the adult pool was no different than previous stays. You have to get up early or go after lunch. They have.a 45 min. rule as well so don't try to leave a towel and go back to bed. I never had a day I did not have a seat. Hot tubs are on reservation but there was rarely anyone in them unless it was really windy. Honestly if you are going to Hawaii to go in a hot tub you are doing it wrong. Waterslides are open, just don't ride after drinking at the pool all day as one makes you dizzy, Food at pool was great, menu is so much better than previous stays. All covid rules and masks followed. FYI, There is a high end coffee maker in the room and mini fridge and a market you can walk to for snacks, Not sure why people wait in line for Starbucks?? Dinner does take some planning, go on open table now and reserve, Humble Market Kitchen Sashimi is a must, and Ko at Fairmont Lobster Tempura! I did have a couple nights I walked in and never waited more than 10 min. for a table. My advice is come with a positive attitude and an open mind and everything will work out. I made myself an anxious wreck before going and my stay exceeded expectations.
