    Worth the Resort Fee

This is our second stay at this hotel. It’s probably the only hotel we’ve stayed at that is worth the resort fee. I’m always a little worried that a hotel will give us a mediocre room when we use rewards points, but we were happily given a large room with a sofa bed close to the lobby. Mask protocols were in place and most guests seemed to be complying. I felt my family was safe. The room was clean, updated and spacious. We didn’t use the pool this time because we had other activities planned, but we did play a round of golf and took a leisurely bike ride around the bay. Both activities are included in the resort fee. I also loved that the bay is right across the street. We walked over to the Newport Dunes Resort and rented paddle boards and ate at their hamburger shack there. Hyatt has beach chairs and umbrellas you can take to spend the day at the beach there. We only took towels and it was fine because there was sufficient shade. We also drove across the road to Fashion Island to eat several times. Overall, we had some great family time and will be back to this resort.

We only stayed for one night and did not use any of the amenities. So it sucked to be charged a resort fee for nothing. The location is great. The first room we got stunk and had bugs flying it it but we moved to another room. Not a big deal. The fire pits, pool and other activities make this place worth it. We did not book direct and saved about $100 off the standard room rates using a third party site. Hotel is close enough to explore Laguna, Balboa and Huntington Beach. If you want to kayak or paddle board, Newport Dunes is less than .5 miles away. Plenty of restaurants to try in the area.

We stayed for two nights in the Balboa section in a one bedroom premier suite. It was basically two hotel rooms with a connecting door, so we had access to two bathrooms. One room had ants, but it was not terrible, so we did not request a change. The beds were quite comfortable, and we enjoyed the balboa pool which seemed a more comfortable temperature than the oasis pool. Room service here is currently in take out containers. The food was okay and cafe shop style. The valets did a great job moving the cars quickly. The front desk worked to resolve errors in my folio.

We, like many of us right now, needed a short getaway and time out of the house. We like the Newport area so we thought we would try the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach. They recently re-opened (Fathers Day Week-End) and have many COVID-19 protocols in place. There could be better enforcement of the mask policy as we saw several guests without masks in the lobby and other public areas. Overall, the property is nice, the only thing keeping my rating from 5 stars is some of the walkways, paint on buildings and hallways could use a refresh. Some areas just seem a little dated. The staff was trying very hard to make it a wonderful stay. They are running a short crew and at times you could really tell. The text number for service worked great. Quick responses but sometimes the service requested took awhile. Overall, as things start to settle in again, I'm sure they'll bring back more staff and the service issues will resolve.
