    Perfect Anniversary Getaway

    Last October my wife and I celebrated our 1 year anniversary in Wailea, Hawaii at the Andaz hotel. This hotel was amazing and perfect for a couples retreat. The hotel has breathtaking views of the ocean in almost every direction even as you lounge from one of the several pools. We enjoyed our time by the pools so much that we ended up canceling our exploring plans since we were very happy relaxing in our cabana. The room we had was very comfortable even though it was a bit small. Although, to be honest, you spend very little time inside your room other than to quickly refresh and recharge. The hotel has some nice amenities as well like a small market to stock up on snacks, grab coffee, and gifts; a couple of onsite restaurants to quickly enjoy meals; and an Enterprise car rental location. The car rental was a huge plus as we could rent onsite and simply bring the car back to the valet. This hotel is family friendly but it’s not family exclusive which means it caters to the couples too who want to enjoy some serenity and romantic moments together as well. The next time we come to Maui and stay in Wailea, then hands down we will choose Andaz. The staff is top notch and look to make sure you enjoy your stay from start to finish.

    The residents of Maui are appalled that Andaz is hosting a film crew coming to Maui to film a tv show! Really! We are close to a lockdown on this island! This should not be allowed! Also so disappointed in Andaz that they have to bring a crane to the island to add on to the hotel! Go away! This isn’t Oahu!

    First let me say we booked through American Express Platnium Services which proved useful in getting the free breakfast and $100.00 credit. We were not upgraded which is pretty much the norm with A/E. The Pros: Friendly staff and beautiful property. Complimentary car to take us shopping or to restaurants Although we did not use the service at the pool. They were well staffed and they were very nice and courteous. Housekeeping was good for the most part. Our room was serviced 2 times a day. water bottles are provided to be refilled at stations on different floors of hotel chips an cookies are provided in your room and replenished daily. Cons: Bathroom was the worst we have ever had in any hotel anywhere in the world. The closet is in the bathroom behind the vanity with 2 small drawers and impossible to get to while someone is using the sink. The shower area is absolutely horrible and the oddest design ever. It is directly behind the vanity with 2 openings. One to enter the shower and the other had no use at all except for allowing water to come out of the ill fitting shower curtain. The curtain on the entry part is just as bad, too small. In the middle of the long, narrow shower area is the shower head and a small soap dish. No ledge to put anything on. There is a wood rack at the entry where the towels and their toiletries are. While you are in the shower it is difficult to reach it as it is at least 4 ft away. We ended up putting our shampoo etc on the floor. While you are in the shower there is a glass wall behind you that is covered with wood slats on the other side. That is where the bed is right behind the slats, actually the low headboard is touching the wood slats. All I could imagine was the silicone caulking for the glass failing and my husband getting wet while I was in the shower and he was napping. That didn't happen but that is how close the bed is to that wall. Very strong water pressure which was good, but made all the water come out under the vanity every time we showered. Why that is an opened area is beyond me. It should be glassed in. The sink (only one) is a vessel sink only about 2" deep. No way to rinse out bathing suits, etc. We were there 9 nights so this was a problem. I complained and the housekeeping supervisor went to the kitchen and got one of those big grey bins. Think busboy in a restaurant clearing a table. That was all they had. It was so large I had to use it in the shower like an old washer woman bending down with the handheld wand. The A/C vent was directly in front of the bed and even though the air never was that cool it blew on our heads. We fashioned a hanger with a towel over the rod and secured it with clips we had. No one ever asked us about it, like a housekeeper. The thermostat does not indicate the temp in the room. We had it set as low as it would go, 68 but it never felt that cool. More like 70+ and humid. The TV had to be pulled out to see from the bed. If you didn't get it exactly right part of the screen was obscured. We asked that the heavy down comforter be replaced with a blanket. They brought a twin blanket for the king bed and instead of making the bed with it, just threw it on the bed. I called and they brought a king one. That was fine until when they changed the bed on the third day they removed it an left another twin blanket. I had to go to great lengths to get this resolved and threatened to leave it they did it again. Slippers are by request only. The pool is nice, but the lounge chairs are only inches apart. No privacy whatsoever. They offer drinks and food, but the prices are sky high. Burgers are $24.00 and cocktails are about $20.00. Your only other option for food (ready made sandwiches and flatbreads) etc. is their Marketplace for take out, also available for limited breakfast items. The seating is benches outside the marketplace which in inside the hotel. It is like sitting in a hallway. I do not know if they offer any room service as we did not have an in room dining menu in our room and never saw anyone delivering food. Be aware of the cost of breakfast, it is only buffet and is 49.00 each for adults with an added tip of 18% + tax. Making the total $120.46 per day. As I said we had it included in our A/E package thank goodness !! It is very good, except for the birds landing and pecking on the muffins (hope that was all they were doing). No one shooed them away. We didn't like that waffles, pancakes or french toast were not made to order.They never taste good sitting under a heat lamp. Omelets and eggs were made to order. Service was spotty, some days coffee was brought quickly and refilled immediately. Other days not as good. So for $892.00 per night. including tax and the $48.00 resort fee, it just didn't seem worth it to us given all the cons I sited. The housekeeping supervisor said this property was a Renissance Hotel before Hyatt purchased it and renovated it. She agreed the bathrooms needed to be totally reconfigured and renovated.We were told every room has the same bathrooms. We asked to see another room, but they said they were full and had nothing to show us. Our room was a partial ocean, which was pretty nice. I know I would have been disappointed with a room facing the front. Also lots of construction on one side of the hotel so beware of that.

    Everything about our stay was amazing. Rooms were clean and luxurious. Grounds are well kept. There are numerous and chairs, so you won't have issues finding some privacy. Every member of the staff that we conversed with was friendly and helpful. We appreciated the in-house laundry room, which was clutch with our young family. Due to coronavirus precautions, we were not able to try any of the restaurants. However, we appreciated the ample of amount of hand sanitizer scattered throughout the resort and free water provided on every other level.

    Family Spring Break

    We loved the resort! Beautiful and modern with great pools and wonderful snorkeling right off the beach. The included snorkel gear, boogie boards and paddle boarding tours really enhanced our beach experience along with the guys who would set up beach chairs and umbrellas for us on the beach. It was a little quiet for our kids in terms of activities other than going to the kids’ club for a half or full day. There was bingo one day that my kids enjoyed, but no other pool side activities during the 5 nights we were there. It could be because of the coronavirus shut downs that started while we were there and low occupancy. On the other hand, we had no problem getting chairs and didn’t have to deal with the hassle and extra expense of reserving cabanas, which it looked like might be necessary if the resort was more fully occupied. The rooms are beginning to show some wear on wood finishes, etc. but the beds were comfortable and the views were great. Food was excellent but expensive.
