The Muthu was good value for what I paid (it was on sale - less than the last place). Interesting architecture - late 50’s Miami style. The lobby has a huge “floating” roof. The lobby is in 3 sections - Reception, lower band/dance level and upper lobby bar level (smoking permitted here) Entrance to the buffet was in the corner of the bar level - a la carte is at the other end. These are all wheelchair accessible via long curving ramps. There’s a ramp down to the pool level, but watch out if it rains - Cuban tiles are notoriously slippery when wet. I believe they have several handicapped suites on ground level. The 5th floor room was nice. Comfy king sized bed. Bathroom was clean. No mold or critters. Shower only - has one big overhead and a smaller detachable head. Always had lots of clean towels. Hot water could be if’y, but I think there was only once I had to take a cold water shower (not bad on a hot day). Electronic safe was free. Coffee maker, iron, board and two sun umbrellas included. Cons for the room: It was raining when we got there. When I got off on the 5th (top) floor, it was raining inside the stairwell/elevator area. The lock on the balcony slider was broken but I was on the 5th floor. TV always had snow even after a repair person made it better. The AC worked well but the controls had been disconnected, so the maid showed me how to use the main breaker as an on/off switch (not the 1st time I’ve seen that). Room door had an automatic closer but it would stop just short of latching the door. Always had to push/pull on door to make sure the bolt was thrown. It appears some one had previous used a “Cuban” key (it had been booted open). One of the two elevators malfunctioned. Mind the doors as they only give you a few seconds to board and then close quickly and will NOT “bounce back” if you try to stop them. Rest of the place: Pretty good overall. Food was ABOVE average. Meatballs were excellent - same for the unidentified ground meat. Joint of Pork done to a turn. Nice “crisp” (skin) but mind the hairs and the fat. Booze was standard economy brands. Premium available for $. The flavour of cocktails varied with the bartender. A la carte was good but small portions. Coffee bar was excellent. The pool was nice, but forget having service at the in-pool bar. Cuban weekenders weren’t too bad. No excessive garbage in/around pool. Saw several mothers take their children “in hand” for acting up. Even had a young Cuban guy in the buffet line up step aside and insisted I go ahead. Overall the staff was friendly and helpful. I bought a litre of milk at the store (for my tea) but after I ran out, the staff at the coffee bar would give me a small glass half full. The BIG CON: The store! I knew that tobacco prices had gone up, but here everything was overpriced (by Cuban standards) by 25-35%. They didn’t even have beer. You’re better off to go to the store (liquour, coffee and tobacco only) down on the main road - south side, just east of the Dolphinarium, look for the yacht that is parked on the dock (it’s a restaurant). Prices here are the same as you get in town. Serrano espresso coffee (the best - ask the servers at the coffee bar) is 14.45P CUC/kg. Prices on the smaller packs have gone up. You can walk the 2-2.5km to Cueva de Ambrosio (Ambrose Cave). This cave has aboriginal wall paintings in good condition but you’d better not be afraid of bats. 3 species live there. Entrance is 5P CUC with guide. If you want pictures, tell the guide to turn off their flashlight after they point out a drawing. I forgot to ask if one of the holes in the skylight room points at Polaris (the north star) or if they found 3 piles of stone in a row (markers for solstices & equinoxes). Entrance to the Eco park is another 1.5km east (5p CUC) where you can visit the ancient cactus (5P CUC). Too hot for me. On the way back you can look for the store I mentioned - it has a bar with cold beer. There’s also a Pirate’s Cave Disco just east of the Cueva de Ambrosio Would I recommend the Muthu - yes, certainly, as long as you can put up with the typical glitches. Several repeat tourists and now Mexicans and Russians. Had a good time, but very disappointed at high prices and no beer at the on-site store.

I was at this hotel 16 august to 30 august, it was the cuban holidays so we had more or less 400 locals those two weeks. Everyone has the right to well deserved vacation, but I find that almost half or 60 % of the local guests did not behave well, am talking about the local adult guests, their children I can't juge them since children are meant to make noise and run everywhere etc. There were some "mean looking" dudes who starred a loit at me every day . the bad about this hotel -The food was less than average, I always eat pasta which is cooked in front of you, the first week the pasta was cooked in front of you but the second week, the pasta was already cooked - the bar on the beach one of the bartender who worked there seems not happy with his life, always making remarks (poor dude) - the alchool seems diluted with water, thankfully I had 5 bottles of sipirtis I bought from duty free in montreal The best thing about this hotel is - the main lobby bar staff at night, Barbon who works at night at the buffet - very clean rooms and excellent maids, hello Mirelli - the reception staff excellent

My partner and I spent a week there during the rainy season in late August. Pros - most beautiful beach I've ever been on - incredible sunsets almost every night - staff was generally friendly and helpful - room had very good air conditioning - room safe was repaired quickly - the shower had detachable shower head Cons - there was a literal human turd on the side of the path to the beach as of my second morning there. It remained there baking in the sun for the duration of my stay - the food was ok at best. The overall cleanliness of the dining rooms could have been much better - booking a meal at the reservation-only restaurants was impossible because there was never anyone occupying the reservation desk - the massage therapist was also mysteriously not there. We even had the front desk call her and she said she was in but never actually answered the door - toilet paper was like wiping your ass with Lego. Normally I'm not picky about these kinds of things but after a week of tourista, it really makes a difference. Thank god for that detachable shower head.

I stayed on this Hotel for my Varadero vacation. Rooms are OK but need a rapid renovation because the doors are not closing well and the AC do not cool off enough. Halls are dirty and lacking maintenance (paint, etc). One of the elevator was not functioning making its usage very hard.Food in the buffet restaurant is terrible poor quality. Locals use the Hotel and makes big lanes to take the food from the different places. They take big amount of food in one visit and even when is not allow to take food out of the restaurant they ignore the disposition and carry out with no limits excessive amount of food. More control from top management is needed. To get to the Hotel is difficult if you travel by yourself. There is no sign in the road identifying the Hotel. Took us several stops and questions asked to finally arrive to the installation. Shows and entertainmnet are OK, some times the music is too loud for the people standing in the Lobby. Beach is very good, calm and enjoyable.

Hotel guests were its downfall, currency exchange is crazy

I traveled with my 9 year old grandson for a week in August. The grounds are beautiful, well maintained and lush. The beach is everything you look for in a Cuban holiday. The staff are, for the most part, friendly and welcoming and eager to keep guests happy. They treated my grandson like he was a member of their family. We had a few minor glitches with the safe but this was dealt with very quickly and resolved. We were in the older part of the hotel, overlooking the properties next door. Rooms are basic but immaculately clean (thank you Daisys). The A/C was consistent and kept nice and cool. We always had hot water and good water pressure. Food was average to good, some meals were excellent. The beach restaurant chef and staff were wonderful and the food there is delicious. The pool is beautiful and has lots of shallow areas for chillin out. Lots of chairs and shady areas. The pool bar and snack bar are always busy, but the service is good and the hamburgers are wonderful. Mosquitos and other bugs were almost non-existent. We went on 1 excursion to the Dolphinario which cost $240 CDN for both of us and included a dolphin show and swim with the dolphins afterwards. You are in with the dolphins for a good length of time and have 1-1 time with them where they pull you around, give kisses and send you shooting high into the air. Great fun. Pictures can be purchased later at a cost of 10 CUC each for a 8x14. To attend the show only is 15 CUC each I believe. The only issue I had was booking with my Sunwing rep - I had indicated that I did not want to swim with the dolphins, just my grandson, but was told that I had to be in the water with him and pay 90 CUC for that. I was surprised to discover that this was not the case and there were several children younger who's parents had paid only for their children and did not go into the water. I expected that I would be refunded at least a part of the money since I did not go in and was misinformed but he would not discuss this option. Very disappointing, however no reflection on the resort. The only real issues we had at this resort were related to the behavior of the guests. The pool area is so beautiful but they would leave plastics cups and plates and napkins everywhere which would blow around and into the pool. There are trash and recycle bins every 10 feet or so but they ignored them and left their garbage behind. The animation crew would often try to keep up with the mess, but were not very successful due to the amount of garbage. In the dining room, people would push and shove and did not respond well to being asked to wait their turn. Guests would pile 3-4 plates so high with food that it was falling off as they walked away. Perhaps the chefs could show some restraint when serving and remind guests they can take some and come back for more, so other guests could be served before food runs out. One evening it took 40 minutes to get fresh shrimp from the grill and I was 5th in line! The 4 in front of me each took several plates and the chef and to start again each time. Unacceptable. The resort does post possible wait times for certain hours on the door to the buffet - make sure you choose a less busy time to go if you want to avoid most of this. One big plus at this resort is all the live music throughout. At the pool at lunch, at the beach restaurant at 1 pm, in the lobby in the evening, there is a band playing and interacting with the guests. Marvelous! I felt that the cost was a bit on the high side for this time of year, and when you add in a 30% exchange rate when you arrive it was not as good a value as one would expect. Overall we created a great holiday but would probably not return, certainly not in August when it is summer holiday in Cuba. Can't quite get past the lack of manners and respect from the guests.
