    March break at Muthu

We have been lucky enough to travel to many resorts and cruises around the world. We have been to resorts in Panama, Nicaraugua, Belize, Dominican Republic, Europe, US, Australia, and parts of Asia. We have been to Holguin and Varadero three other times. My point: we have been to beaches around the world and have admit Varadero is still one of our favourites. While getting sick of the snow; our family of 4 (2 adults and 2 teens), booked a month in advance with Sunwing from Toronto. Reading the mixed reviews gave us some hesitations about booking the Muthu resort; however, after our trip to Muthu we were pleasantly surprised. Luckily, the weather was good driving early in the morning to Toronto from London. Although, we were leaving just shortly before March break-Pearson wasn’t too bad getting through. Flight was easy, however, my family and I purchased the Havana day excursion in advance. The flight attendants had guaranteed that their prices were the lowest, but later when we got to the resort, the Sunwing resort representative had prices that were lower. When on the plane, the flight attendants had stated that the excursion was refundable (and this information was also told to another client on another flight as well); but when I tried to get a refund to rebook, the resort rep for Sunwing pointed out on the printed receipt from the plane that is was “non-refundable”. So just a warning-buyer beware on purchasing in-fight excursions. More details on the excursion later. Remember that this is a poor country and, although the people live on rations, they try to serve you as well as they can and any gesture of gifts/tips does reward well in service. Going through Cuban customs was a slow process. The bus trip from the airport was easy and luckily MGM Muthu Varadero (formerly Oro de Playa Varadero) was one of the earlier stops, so we checked in maybe an hour before our room was ready, being helped by Pedro-the porter. Will go through the details, pros/cons of rooms, resort, excursion, food. The room: We had room 2307 in a building that had 2 of 3 elevators working and a set of stairs. Pros: they were nice enough to immediately set up a third double bed that can accommodate our second daughter balcony view somewhat of the ocean bathroom-all plumbing was working and even had hot water as needed throughout the whole stay closet space was plenty for the 4 of us TV-had international channels mini-fridge-with complimentary water daily for Sunwing (had to remind housekeeping sometimes) towels changed daily cleaned daily there is shampoo/body wash for us Cons: bedding was dated and frayed in some areas fixtures and furniture was outdated and damaged in some areas the air conditioner ran well, however, the controls didn’t do anything so it would run all the time which made the room cold at night; however, we used the breaker switch by the room door to turn off the air at night our room faced the service road of the Iberostar which caused some noise with the buses at 6am and 7pm with the moving of staff from the hotels which caused some of us to wake early in the morning The Resort: Pros: Small but quaint and easy to navigate Ernesto-Sunwing Rep was nice and informative Since it was small-easy to recognize staff and they got to know us pretty well also Bar staff were friendly and we left little gifts/tips which helps the service as well The renovations are going on with the new tiles in the area and the new management were willing to listen to recommendations to improve the property Beach had easy access and was never busy; since a small resort there were hardly any vendors on the beach Massage- Roniel was great and he massaged our whole family On staff doctor and nurse were nice (luckily never needed their services) Pool-even though I am a beach girl; on the windy days I did the aqua “gim” and did some salsa classes and the animation team were great (loved Alexandro) Tipped/gifted the beach chair guys and they were always there to help set-up Loved the live Cuban bands (in the lobby and on the beach including right by the beach restaurant, so nice to lunch with live music); the Opera singers, the circus shows and my girls are synchronized swimmers and they appreciated the water show as well Beach games were fun and engaging and learning dance moves on the beach was fun Animation team really tried to engage the tourists and make the events fun Mosquitos love me-so suggestion for bug spray for those with sweet blood Can easily take the hop-on-hop-off bus to downtown Varadero, 5CUC for the day Cons: There was only one pool but not really busy Beach chairs-there were limited blue/soft beach chairs so you had to get up early to hold the chairs Not many amenities since the resort is small; there’s a tennis court which we never used; paddle boats and kayaks as well Catamaran “free” rides were short and disappointing-they said the short ride was due to wind but I think they only reserved the rides for the snorkelling customers On weekends some locals came to stay however it only added to the culture of the trip and still no concerns with major waits nor line-ups Foods: Pros: Beach restaurant was awesome with fresh foods and the BBQ was great (the staff-Rafael, Reynol, Alexandro, Pedro, Fiallo and Tainos (taught us Cuban card game, Manotanzos (?spelling)-were all amazing! Vegetarian-had to ensure that there were options and that the beans had no pork products in them Although the variety was lacking-the new food manager (William Rodriguez) ensured that the temperature and “plating” was on par A la carte restaurants - loved the Cuban restaurant on the beach; Italian was just ok and International was good as well Cuba is not known for their food; however since they are under an embargo and have little GMO and pesticides in their food we seemed to be good with it Cafe Bar: great staff, yummy espressos Small resort meant no line-ups for food and we were there for March break Cons: Fruit had little variety but could be due to us travelling in the “dry”season Sometimes staff were slow in cleaning up a table in the buffet lounge-but once you got a regular server and again tipped them-they were on it Pool bar-not the greatest of food but the hot dogs/sandwiches were decent in a pinch Excursion-Day trip to Havana with Sunwing Pros: Had a variety of things to do for most people Air-conditioned bus but would have preferred to to the classic car since would have been cheaper and can do our own thing Option to do a classic car while in Havana was an extra cost at $10/pp the lunch included was good-basic chicken stew but the black beans were delicious Tour guide-was nice and informative Walking tour was interesting and would love to explore Old Havana on my own Due to strict gun laws and only 4% violent crimes in the country-it is one of the safest places in the world as a tourist Cons: Trip is cheaper on the resort than on the plane; and if purchased on the plane-it is NON-REFUNDABLE!!! Bus tours-have to wait for slower people and those who need to use the bathroom all the time Pina colada stop-forced to go here and shop as well Classic car extra-was good but not everyone had a driver that spoke english nor gave descriptions of places on the New Havana tour (luckily I spoke some Spanish which helped) Not really great to see New Havana on the bus, but will explore it again on my own Hope this was helpful and we meant some really great people at this resort from Canada, Sweden, India, England, Germany; and since it looks like the renos will be promising we would consider booking here again. Although a small resort, the friendly staff and the simple food made the resort a positive experience.

It offers a good price/quality ratio. The food is decent and most will find something to their liking. Two disappointing things during my visit. The shower did not have any hot water and customer service did not fix the problem after 3 requests. The "gym" was non- functional. None of the equipment worked. Even the weight stack was broken. It is also right next to the massage room. A little design mistake. You get what you pay for....The staff is friendly and helpful. At 1000$ Canadian or less for a week, one can't complain.

3rd time at this resort great resort for the price looks like management is trying to improve the facility repair work going on the entertainment is top notch the music in the lobby was terrific food was good buffets are hard to manage when you have so many people eating at one time on my other visits the buffet would run out of plates and cups but that didn't happen once this year .The beach bbq has the best chicken staff tried real hard to make it enjoyable . overall a good resort but people can be very fussy expecting 5 star treatment at a 3.5 star price would definitely go back again .My only complaint has nothing to do with the resort. my issue is with the airport the restrooms are ridiculous no doors on the toilets and having people collecting money is annoying and they are quite aggressive at times i think they make enough money on the high exchange rate to have proper and free restrooms

Just got back from my very first trip to Cuba. Anywhere in fact. Thought the resort was great. Was very impressed with the staff being so interacted with the guests. The beach was beautiful. Will be going again for sure.
