First and foremost I want to say that Costa Rica is a beautiful, friendly, safe country to visit and we will come back again and again. I do not know if we will come back to Dreams Las Mareas though. Dreams Las Mareas is an outstanding property but be prepared to venture into an isolated area of the country. Certainly one of the nicest we have visited. The pools are large and well cared for, but a little on the cold side, as is the ocean which surprised us. The room was clean and well appointed with an amazing view, and room service was fast, fresh and tasty. With the above paragraphs, you might wonder how I could only give 3 stars so here it comes. The reason for the low rating is service, plain and simple. The poor service began only moments after arrival when we were shown to our room. The bellman took us and our bags to our room and we were assigned 2 double beds. We immediately asked for a king room as we had booked, and he called the front desk, only to be told we were out of luck. He was very kind and it was not his fault, so we tipped him and went down to the front desk. We arrived later in the evening (about 9PM) so perhaps the good front desk people had gone home, and when I explained our problem, the person at the desk said there was nothing he could do and turned and began speaking to a coworker. I thought maybe he was trying to get more information to help us, so I stood there and waited. After a few minutes, he turned back to me and said "I told you there was nothing I can do" and went back to talking to his friend. This is not the type of service I expect from a Dreams resort that I paid significant money to join, and thankfully have never experienced it at other resorts. My wife and I resigned ourselves to sleeping separately and decided to make the best of it. The restaurants are all understaffed and it causes long delays in being seated. I could understand if the resort was crowded, or if numerous people were trying to be seated at the same time, but this was not the case. One night we went to El Patio and was told the wait would be 45 minutes. We were given a beeper and told we would be called. We watched group after group come out. When we got in, there was no less than 10 dirty tables waiting to be cleaned. This is unacceptable, because it is all related to Dreams trying to save a few pennys at the expense of customer service. The same happened at the other restaurants.

Everything was wonderful, the food was good, Pools were plenty and salespeople on the beach were pleasant and took 'no' as an answer if given, although they had some nice items and I like to support the locals rather than buy all my souvenirs at the gift shop at the resort when I can. The food was good and wine ok, although I preferred paying more sometimes in the evening for higher quality wine, but I do enjoy a good wine, It's also a nice feature that I can get a better bottle of wine in the evening with dinners. The bar drinks were very good. We had a room with a swim out, nice treat. The only reason I'm not giving it a 5 start is one of the employees was extremely rude to my 82 year old father and myself in the larger gift store upstairs.. I went up to the cash with my father because he's hard of hearing, but asked that he do the transactions separately and he was offended or something by that, I'm really not sure why. I'm a polite person, never rude although I did say to him that I really had no intention of causing him to be upset with us, at which point his co worker talked to him in Costa Rican then he settled a bit, but it was disappointing because most of the staff were extremely friendly and I really am a polite and accommodating person, so maybe it needs to be addressed. It's also possible a previous guest was rude to him prior to me and he was maybe feeling a little disgruntled in general with the guests, I'm really not sure. Everything else was absolutely lovely.

    Beautiful Resort But......

First, we are Gold Plus preferred club members so we do expect a bit more pampering than those who are not preferred club. That being said, if you are not preferred club and you like to drink tequila, the only thing you can get at the pool bars and non preferred club bars is Jose Cuervo. Running to the preferred club for a top shelf beverage was definitely not an option since the resort is spread out. Resort is beautiful and well kept. Pools were cold, but refreshing to me. My husband rarely got in the pool because of the temperature of them. If you want a float/raft, bring your own...they have NONE at this resort. Three or Four days into the trip, one of the eight of us got a stomach bug, then another and another and another until all but three of us ended up with it. Spent a day and a half in bed going to and from the bathroom.....we just got home on Saturday evening and still our systems are fighting it on and off. Food was great and waitstaff great for the most part. A few language issues, but you are in a foreign country. Our favorite was the Oceanside Steakhouse. It was incredible and we ate there more than any other restaurant. Maids were excellent. Only complaint was that the turndown service was always offered at around 4:30 pm....would have loved for it to be while we were at dinner, but maybe that's because it is a family resort and children go to bed earlier? Not sure. Lots of walking up and down hills but golf cart transportation is available for those who need it. There seemed to be a lack of bartenders around the resort. Long waiting for drinks most of the time. All in all we had a wonderful time, but the group we go with are always fun no matter where we are! At check in, which was totally understaffed, only one person checking people in at the preferred club, also at check out. The person who was supposed to meet us upon arrival was no where to be found, Guilberto. He has sent an email out before our arrival asking for any special requests, which we filled out and sent back with no response to our questions or requests. We were told we had $200 in resort credits to use, along with a free hydrotherapy session at the spa. We specifically asked if we could use the credit toward lobster and were told we could. We were all told the same. But when it came to checking out, we were informed that we owed $80 for two lobsters, which by the way, don't waste your time on them. They were served at the very end of the meal, after a long wait, and they were over cooked, cold and chewy. That being said, to be told we had to pay for them when checking out just added insult to injury. We thought they were free, so we didn't complain. Had we have known they actually were not and we had to pay for them, we would have asked for them to be redone or sent them back. Excursions are all far away....NOTHING is close...not even shopping. The roads are horrible with many pot holes. They were filling in/patching the pot holes when we were leaving the resort. Hopefully they have that completed and keep up with it. If you get motion sickness.....good luck.

Overall, we liked the resort - great views of ocean/bay, large swimming pools, many activities, monkeys. However, after our arrival on Saturday, all five of us got sick with stomach flu - my wife on Tuesday night, myself on Wednesday night, my son & daughter-in-law on Friday night and my grand-daughter on Saturday. There's something going on with something.

The Good:?? Beautiful Resort, very clean and well kept. Several pools with great poolside service by staff. Very nice spacious rooms. Housekeeping does an outstanding job. Staff for the most part very helpful. Lots of hills and walking but golf carts were plentiful for those wanting a ride. Very nice Preferred Club with well stocked bar. Restaurants were great. Our favorites were the steaks at Seaside Grill and the Sushi at Himitsu. Room Service also noteworthy with fast and accurate service. Breakfast at World Cafe very good with wide selection. We were concerned about having kids there since we usually only go to Secrets, but for the most part all of the kids there were well behaved and we hardly knew they were there. The Bad; ?? Beds were hard. I found them uncomfortable. Others in our part were OK with them. Need more bartenders. Had to wait in line often. Needs more employees that speak fluent or passable English. Six of us checked in together. We are all Preferred Club members. We were all told that we had $200 in resort coupons that could be used for lobster. Upon checkout we were told that the $41 apiece for the lobsters were not eligible for the coupons and since we are Preferred Club members the coupons would not apply to us anyway. The Manager said that the person checking us in mis-informed us. He gave us a 25% discount and my wife and I had to pay over $60 for 2 cold and chewy lobster tails. He should have comped it since Dreams made the error, Lesson learned.
