I went with my couple and we stayed at a premium room. It will be great that the manager could not only read this but also take some actions, we travel a lot and we would lime to gi e our humble opinion, not only from our side but many customers talked about the same good and bad things. Pros: 1. Nice beach, crystal clear, no waves 2. Good national food, nothing fancy but good. 3. Clean rooms and big with great view 4. Adults only hotel 5. Great onsite transportation 6. Great staff- good customer service 7. Separate bar pool for people that want to party 8. Great alcoholic beverages and good brands( if u pay premium) Cons: 1. We arrived to the reception at 10am the first day and we didnt get a chance to make reservation for a la carte dinner, premium rooms full and only 1 restaurante open. 2. We went to the main buffet lunch on saturday And there were not food options for people lactose intolerant( we were not asked about allergies) we had to go to the snack restaurant were food was not that great for lunch. 3. The beverages and beers in the room were hot and the fridge will keep anything cold but will not cool anything 4. Only 2 towels in the room and we didnt get them changed until 4pm next day because we asked. No room cleaning for that day and we did leave the note. 5. The big pool had the music at a volume that everyone there was complaining, you cant relax, it was too too loud. We had to leave. Could be great if u also play something else than only reggaetón. 6. No cable service in the room during the weekend and weak signal sometimes. 7. It is a very hot month, 78 pool chairs and only 6 umbrellas in a place where the sun hits really strong, people that cant get sunburn, cant enjoy of that area. I would really recommend to help customers to relax, that loud music in the main big pool is not what people are looking for, u could play that music at the pool bar, you could add more umbrellas and try to make the premium price to really pay for the value.

Overall there is room for improvement but you get what you’re paying for and it’s a peaceful and restful place. Overall score 3.5/5

Where to even begin as there is simply so much to say. Firstly, this is no longer Occidental Papagayo but is now Barcelo, which may help to avoid some confusion. Check-in was a slog. Even though we were the only 4 people arriving on a Thursday afternoon, the process took nearly 30-minutes. Only one receptionist working, and between waiting, filling out forms, and endless explanations, she was wonderfully professional, but who is going to remember what time the bar closes or where to eat when you've just spent 4 hours in the car and only want to get to the beach!? Rooms were fine. We booked a Premium Level Junior Suite (702) and a Premium Level Room (606). Even though the junior suite is more expensive, the views from the regular premium level room were far superior. Undoubtedly, upgrade to a Premium Level room so you have access to the VIP services - exclusive bar as we called it (where Julio and Olman offer the best drinks and incredible service) as well as room service availability. Other than that, those special gold bracelets didn’t offer much. The beach itself was lovely. Incredibly quiet and private compared to most Guanacaste beaches, and the sea quite calm and great for swimming. Ample beach chairs, excellent massages right on the beach by Estefany, and a number of people offering incredibly overpriced tours. There’s a shuttle you can grab anytime you see it to/from the beach, but the walk down or up was no more than 5-minutes from our rooms. Frustrations and disappointment existed in two main areas: employment (not employees!) and dining options. It seems that the hotel has reopened and is employing about half of the staff that is required to properly run the place. Housekeeping never made it around until about 4pm - the exact time that you’re returning from a full day at the beach, want to shower and then make it out the door for sunset. Restaurant staff were totally overwhelmed at every meal, especially in requiring that the buffet is served to guests due to Covid restrictions. The pool towel person was almost never working, making it a full day project to procure tennis racquets or archery equipment. As a result, it also seemed that the staff that was working were exhausted and being pulled in various directions, leaving them visibly frustrated and even hostile at times. The second area that was annoying was all of the confusion that exists around the bars and restaurants. The swim-up pool bar at the beach is open only from 11am - 5pm, where staff were incredibly rude. They told us that after ordering our drinks we had to leave the bar because of Covid, yet other guests were able to sit there for over an hour. The pool was also filthy so we went only the one time and never returned. The ’snack bar’ by the main hotel pool is open daily, yet you’re told you cannot enter if you’re wet. Well… it’s a pool bar! There is no cocktail or drink service around the pool, which means one would have to schlep back to their room to change each time they would like to get a drink. It makes zero sense. If you have a bar at a pool you need to expect that your guests will be wet and not make them feel uncomfortable if they are. Otherwise, the only other bar options are next to the lobby, which you’re certainly not going to hike up the stairs to in your swimsuit to order a drink. The buffet was diverse in its offerings during our three nights there. Breakfast was always great, we had room service delivered to our room each day for lunch on the balcony as it was complimentary with our Premium Level access, and with our three night stay we received one a la carte dinner in the ’sushi’ restaurant. Breakfast and room service were the definite highlights. The dinner buffet was fine, but again, you could sense that the serving staff were overwhelmed and if you’ve ever worked in hospitality or are human, witnessing that stress can totally impact your experience. I felt horrible for them. The sushi restaurant was a total joke as well - only an appetizer of mediocre sushi from a set dinner menu followed by options of kung pao chicken or teriyaki salmon, and then the only favorable part, green tea sorbet. This ‘Disco’ was cute and certainly less lively than usual due to Covid, which I was grateful for. Our visit was fine, but I was really hoping for a relaxing long weekend. Instead, I felt as if I had to work to find the things I needed because the company isn’t employing ample staff on the property. Nb. One of my friends slipped on the stairs and cut his knee, and there wasn’t a band-air or first aid kit to be found anywhere on the property! Luckily it wasn’t anything severe, but for a more severe medical issue, be prepared. Nbb. Often stated as 'adults only' but there were a plethora of children at the hotel.
