Had a great time but some basics need improving

I have stayed at many hotels as I travel for business. This was a 8 night holiday from 30th April. I went on with my sister. I booked direct via Barcelo group. Occidental at Xcaret is set in the jungle trees along the coast and has its own private man-made beach/cove. It is definately quite a unique place where you can see monkeys swinging in the trees and iguanas as well as other widlife like deer roaming around. So the good points: - Impressive lobby area and generally clean well kept resort. - Good size room and comfy bed. Good room Air Conditioning kept the room at a good temperature - Buffet restaurant breakfast had lots of choice and freshly made omellette availability - We managed to get bookings in the A La Carte restaurants without having to queue early in the morning like other reviews reported. Although we were flexible with timings. - Gym is best I have used in a hotel. - Beach area is good and not too overcrowded. - Entertainment was good on most nights. Some bad points: - Housekeeping needs improving - bed sheets were found to be stained on arrival. Towels were not left in the room on multiple occasions. Also towels that are torn at the edges were left. Not good for a 5* resort. There was no reply when using the room phone so meant having to walk to reception to report things. - Room was bit rough around the edges with shower gel dispenser being broken. Also Shower head was dirty and not spraying correctly. It should be replaced. - The staff are very keen to try to get you to sit through a presentation about the Bercelo company so you get some extra benefits and discounts. - no access to long stretch of sandy beach found at some resorts. just a small beach/cove which was very nice though. Overall it was a good holiday.

The hotel, unfortunately, was overrated and didn't meet the bar. The hotel is not solo traveller friendly and the service towards solo travellers was appalling. The buffet restaurant had OK food, though the speciality restaurants served the worst meals I've had in a restaurant. The rooms are worn out, there are not enough sunbeds around the pools and they don't clean the ground around the pools. The only thing that made the experience OK was the Xcaret Park, which comes at an added cost.
