We have stayed at the Westin for years and must say that this was one of the best vacations we have had there. The beach is the best on the island. That said, it is the staff that makes your vacation special. Warm welcomes at reception, great service at breakfast and an all around good feeling to the hotel. It has become more crowded, but so has the island. The renovations are lovely. We will definitely be back next year.

Really Bad Live Music and a Cluttered Beach

OK for this money the hotel should be nearly perfect and the Westin could have been a much better experience than it was. To start with there was terrible live music on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday afternoons, and on Sunday they had fireworks. I do not go to a tropical island beach resort for the noise. The beach in front of the hotel was completely covered with chaises, umbrellas, kayaks, jet skis, etc. At ground level the beach view was totallyt obscured. To make matters worse there is a designated swimming area with floats, ropes, and signs, and a large floating platform in the middle of the area. I was dodging ropes and platforms every moment I was swimming. So much for getting back to nature. There are even old ropes lying on the bottom in the swimming area. Hey Westin how about cleaning up your trash? The room had a big closet with useful cubbyholes for my shoes and there were three deep drawers for my clothes. The room would have been excellent except for two problems. First the lights in the bathroom were retina-searing. I don't need that kind of candlepower to locate the commode. It is OK to have a bright light at the vanity but this was ridiculous. Also they used really cheap bathroom tissue. Do they not have Charmin in the islands? At least there was a decent reading light at the bed. The second and by far worse problem was with the A/C. The thermostat read 78 but I would say it was really about 72 degrees. The temp could only be turned down, not turned up! 78 was the max. There was a beautiful Hunter ceiling fan in the room but such a thing is useless in an icebox. Every time I returned to my room after walking or swimming the cold was physically painful. The bedclothes were too heavy so that I went from freezing to sweaty and back again every night I was there. My solution was to wear two shirts whenever I was in my room. Service on Grand Cayman is a mix of wonderfully friendly, English-snooty, and St-Thomas-surly. Overall I give it a B. Food is great everywhere, fish, shrimp, and lobster. It is expensive but it is worth it. Food: A-. There are some great activities too such as swimming with the stingrays. FUN: : B+ Georgetown is a great place to buy a Swiss watch. SHOPPING:B+ The Westin is a beautiful hotel but next time I will look for a little more natural and serene setting.

    Very Nice but Noisy

The hotel is very nice with a great beach, pool, and Oceanside restaurant. The rooms are all standard small size except for a few suites. Although we got upgraded to an ocean front room we wished we kept our ocean view room on the side of the building since these still have ocean views without all of the pool noise. There is constant music and noise making your balcony experience not so enjoyable. We also had bad luck with a large obnoxious and rude group that had no regards for noise level or resort etiquette. The food at the beach grill was very good. The hotel also has water sports right on property so it’s easy to take nice excursions. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet was very good. Nice hotel but not the place for peace and quiet. If you like busy and noisy then you won’t have a problem.

The Westin continues to impress; it's a lovely spot that is hard to leave

This is our family's 5th trip to Grand Cayman and the 4th in which the Westin figured into our plans. Plusses: Very friendly and accommodating staff. Everyone from the housekeepers to the front desk to the wait staff are great. The grounds are meticulous, and you can't beat the location on 7 Mi Beach. Although nothing on this island is cheap in terms of hotels, the Westin serves up an arguably good value as compared to other properties that are either exorbitantly priced and crowded (the Ritz) or a really nice property that has lost its beach (the Marriott). As someone else posted, the only drawback to the Westin is the battle (and sometimes it is) over beach side and pool side lounge chairs/cots. If you obsess about being the closest to the beach, then you better be up well before 7AM to stake your claim. It's kind of silly, really, but it is reality at this property. Nevertheless, I/we, love the place and hope to be back someday. Evenings just before sunset at the beach/pool bar with someone playing guitar and a live mic, are pretty close to sublime. In terms of meals, you can opt for any number of them at the Westin -- or be in walking distance, across the street from others. I have read in the past that people thought good food in Grand C was hard to find. I don't know what they are talking about. Nearly every cuisine and dollar range are available to you in short distance from the hotel -- just for what it's worth.

Five stars for Hotel! But service...

We planned a last minute trip and decided to stay at the Westin. The front desk manager was kind enough to upgrade us upon request although it was a room with partial ocean view but was still very nice. My gripe is not with hotel grounds it’s mostly with Westin’s day to day staff. The hotel’s poolside restaurant offers limited food and is priced accordingly to brand so we decided to order in a pizza from the outside. Once the pizza came we started to eat by the pool but then we’re suddenly interrupted rudely by someone who said we need to take the pizza up to the room. I understand hotel policy but there was no reason for this woman to be rude and embarrass us in front of people. If she had just politely and quietly told us we couldn’t eat by the pool we would’ve respected that. A message explaining the situation was left for the manager who failed to respond or reach out for apology. Not surprised as we were told at the time of check in that we didn’t pay for hotel with cash and that we used points. I don’t know how other earn points but Our points were earned by spending money. They weren’t free. A second incident occurred with my wife and three year old son who desperately had to use the bathroom but couldn’t get into the room and waited almost 20 minutes for someone to help. The apology was a mere two free drink tickets. Thanks. This was planned to be a good trip and overall still was but the service at this hotel certainly left a bad taste and will most likely not stay as the staff mostly cares for gold and platinum members.
