We booked a couple of rooms excitedly after receiving an email announcing the newly renovated hotel. Great! I guess the review of my previous stay at one of my favored, yet now dated, properties paid off. We even bragged to our visitors from Canada about how we had made sure to get them clean, recently redone accommodations. And as a bonus, it was a property I had stayed at and thoroughly enjoyed when my daughter was a young child…a great stay at a then new hotel right next to Disney. We were a bit disappointed at check-in to find that our requested room types were unavailable. How about bunk beds...for a 19 and 15 year old? No thanks. OK, no problem. You'll be in different buildings...but there's a hallway you can use! Navigating to the rooms was interesting. Wading through a flooded hallway to the elevator entrance was a surprise. At least the kind maintenance woman sheepishly apologized. Stuff happens, right? Once we forged our way through the hallway, we were met with an “Out of Service” sign on the elevator. Stuff happens, right? Too bad three different employees had explained that we had elevators near each of our rooms and specifically directed us to the one that was shut down. Well, kind of shut down, I guess. Apparently it wasn’t out of service on the other floors. I didn’t chance it. Oh well. At least we had our newly refreshed rooms to enjoy. Wait, what the hell... Old, dingy rooms, poorly lit by aged fixtures and barely orange-yellow bulbs likely older than our youngest guest. The second bedroom in one unit was seemingly a closet with two ancient, uncomfortable twin beds crammed into it. An uneven, battered refrigerator rocked like a hobby horse when touched. Inept tile and caulking repairs. A loose tub/shower drain that prevented the water from draining until we pulled it out and tossed it aside. An entry door that wouldn’t latch unless you leaned against it and pressed it into the jamb...or slammed it, I guess. The TVs in both rooms were a nice touch. Shame they weren’t set up to receive the same channel lineup. The AC return was last properly cleaned...I guess when someone last gave a s**t. Filthy outlets were available to charge our phones, provided we were careful not to touch them. The master craftsman level electrical upgrades were impressive…OK, maybe more like an industrial warehouse wired by a first week apprentice. And there were dirty dishes available for the leftovers we dared not bring into the room. When we inquired about the state of the property, we were enthusiastically informed that the pool slides had been updated! So there’s that. I thought I might at least rest a bit and get some work done before the drive home, so I inquired about an extended checkout. Well, maybe not. I received no reply to my first request and, on the second, was begrudgingly offered two whole hours. I suppose I was selfish to expect the requested accommodations and perhaps a little grace at the end of a stay at a badly misrepresented property that couldn’t have been at 20% occupancy…unless most of the guests walked there. And to be clear, we did not complain to or badger the staff about things they could do nothing about. This wasn’t the laziness of a few employees. It was systemic. This is (mis)management. We simply asked questions to satisfy our confusion, expressed our disappointment politely, and thanked the staff for their time. I could go on. I’ve already gone on too long. I suppose I could have summed up the entire stay with the phrase sadly uttered by the matron of our visiting family: “The hotels in Guyana are better than this.” Maybe it was the healthy rat strolling along the main walkway to the newly renovated pool slide that sealed it for her. Hard to say.

We had a wonderful stay at Holiday Inn! The room was clean, comfortable, and perfect for our family. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and the water park was so much fun for everyone. We especially want to say thank you to Delaine for decorating the room for my grandson’s birthday. It was such a thoughtful surprise and made his birthday even more special! We had a great time and truly enjoyed our stay. Thank you to the whole team for making our family visit so memorable. We would definitely come back again!
