Second Time and Still Amazing

sheilasiciliano (Oshawa, Canada) on May 19, 2024

We have stayed at Sun Palace last May and this May. We chose to return to Sun Palace for many reasons. The entire property inside and out is immaculate with staff attentive to all aspects leaving all surfaces gleaming. Every detail from pool and common bathrooms is constantly cleaned and attentive service with staff always being attentive. The food is simply amazing with the breakfast buffet being incredible in variety and quality. Juan our morning server was so helpful and attentive, always smiling and remembering us each morning and our beverage preferences. He definitely added to our wonderful trip. He truly is a gem The process to make reservations for dinner via the app was easy and we did not experience any issues with availability. Each restaurant is amazing with the Italian one being our favourite. I would highly recommend this resort.

It breaks my heart to write this reviw...not mmbers...honest review

Wrasse01 (Saint Jacob, Illinois) on May 18, 2024

It saddens me to have to write my review, that's why it took so long for me to do. I am going to start with the some background. He have been staying for a week at the Sun Palace every year since 2008. We were very close to the manager at the time Palbo Winkler until his sad death. During that time we were treated really well. It was our home away from home even though we weren't members. After Pablo's passing he was succeeded by a new manager Walter Barbieri. He was wonderful and picked up where Pablo left off. In 2022 a new manager took over and Walter left....this is the start of the severe decline at the Sun Palace. Let's get on with this review. The beach and pool are always beautiful, plenty of beach chairs and umbrellas. We are beach people not pool people, but we did hear plenty other people complain that all the good pool chairs were reserved for members. More on the member thing later. The rooms: Always beautiful, clean, comfortable bed, and beautiful ocean views. No issues at all ever with the rooms. Food: Here is where this vacation went south. We are not foodies, I am somewhat picky, my husband is not. Let's start with the breakfast buffet. Compared to years past the breakfast buffet was extremely small. Not any fresh juice options like they always had in the pat, like water melon juice etc. The only options were orange juice, green juice, and grapefruit juice. The fresh fruit was put in individual cups as a fruit medaly. Instead of the usual huge assortment of fruits. They still had a made to order omelets, eggs, waffles, and French toast. The pastries were also lacking unlike in the bast. Lunch: This was extremely disappointing. We like to never leave the beach, so we eat at our beach chairs. After the renovation in 2020, they would have made to order personal brick oven pizzas. We loved that. They no longer had that in 2023. Chicken wings were available one day and not the next. The onion rings and fries were cold and very soggy. It was never like that before. If you wanted to eat lunch inside at the buffet, you had to go to your room, dry off and change swimwear was not allowed. The guacamole cart was great, but was only available one or two times during the week. Also no churro cart. All of things were available in 2021, 2022 the decline of the Sun Palace began. Dinner: This year was the first year they began to require dinner reservations at all restaurants. Members got first dibs on reservations. Non members got the left overs. Sometimes you might get stuck eating at 8 or 9 at night because of this. Such a shame they went to this. Non members were treated very poorly from what I saw. Again I am not a member. The food at the restaurants were the worst we have ever experienced at the Sun Palace. The Asian used to be one of our favorites, this year the wait was incredibly long to get your food, spring rolls were always cold, the main dishes were not much better. The steak was a huge disappointment, because if you wanted a decent cut of meat like a rib eye you have to pay for it, it used to be included. The Mexican was just down right bad all the way around, and I tried several dishes. For the cost of the Sun Palace the quality of the food should be back to like it was. They charged more, but lowered their quality standards. Our final take on this hotel....it has went downhill unfortunately. We loved this place, you can read my many reviews about this hotel. The breakfast was the quality of a motel 8 continental breakfast. The same with the lunch. Very disappointing. We would love to come back to the Sun Palace in the future if they can ever get back to their former glory. Sun Palace has to remember Non members are just as important as members, and need to be treated as such. If they ever bring back the brick oven pizza for lunch, improve the breakfast buffet, get rid of restaurant reservations, and go back to how they used to be we would not hesitate to go back, Unfortunately this year we will be staying at the Hyatt Zilara that has no time shares, so you are all equal. I will review that property after my stay in a few weeks. Thanks for taking the time to read this review. If the new hotel manager would like to reach out, I will happy to discuss this. It saddens me to have to write a two star review.
