Beautiful resort for destination wedding
dmccrann (Barnegat, New Jersey) on Oct 23, 2024
My husband and I used the Barcelo resort in Riviera Maya to host our destination wedding in April and we were overall very happy with the resort. Since we were the bride and groom, we had a lot to arrange as far as room blocks, speaking with the wedding coordinator, other vendors arranged with the hotel, and helping getting our guests situated over several days before the wedding. In case many do not know, Barcelo in Riviera Maya is basically a complex of six hotels all on the same property. You have access to some features at almost all of the hotels (except for the highest end hotel which you do not have total access to). You can come and go to most of the bars, pools, restaurants, etc. We chose Barcelo Maya Caribe for its location in the middle of the compound and its general affordability for our guests. We used a travel agent to block off rooms for our guests. Our guests booked through our travel agent to stay at our hotel. Now whether this was the agent we used or the hotel, we did have some issues with some of our guests being placed at a different hotel than us, which made us and the guests both pretty unhappy. The hotel did not easily accommodate these guests to move them which is probably my only complaint. Moving on from that, the hotel is situated like I said basically in the middle of the compound. It’s located easily near the biggest pools and right by the mall. Our room was upgraded to the ground floor rooms that have walk out pools which was absolutely gorgeous. The rooms were spacious and the mini bars were filled pretty consistently every day for us. The housekeeping was also consistent. The pool bars and other bars were as to be expected. Busy with people wanting drinks, but if you’re patient they are totally fine. We enjoyed several of the bars and explored the compound frequently. Another thing that many of our friends and family found frustrating was the dinner reservations. We found it to be very difficult to get conveniently timed dinner reservations among many of the restaurants and you could not just walk in and sit at many of the restaurants that were not buffet. Make sure to get your reservations as early as possible or you will be stuck eating at the buffets for every meal. The buffets are also totally fine, but you can sit at most of the restaurants also for free so why eat buffet when you don’t have to? All in all, we did love this resort and really had minimal issues. Bug shout out to the wedding coordinator we had. Cindy was amazing for us and was very thorough with everything from start to finish for us. We couldn’t have asked for a better time for the wedding.
We love going here

We have been to The Barcelo Maya resort multiple times. We keep going back to the same resort because the beach is beautiful and always clean and the snorkeling is good as well. The staff are always nice even when they can’t fix a problem they still try to be nice. The resort itself is huge. The pools are beautiful. The swim up bars have great service. The rooms are always clean. We have also had one of the rooms with the hot tub on the balcony and that was kind of fun, but I’m not sure that’s worth the money. The reservation style dining is good. The show at Tokyo is fun and enjoyable. The buffet food is decent. I wouldn’t say it is outstanding, but it’s definitely edible. The upside of the buffet is the servers are always attentive. The resort itself is always clean and you get to see iguanas all over the place well except in your room. If I had to say the only downfall of this resort seems to be, they have an issue getting you checked in on time. If you’re ready for the fact that you are not going to get your room at 3 o’clock when they say check is you don’t get mad about it, but it is definitely an issue they need to work on. Make sure that unlike my wife at the little stands, you don’t pay full price. There is always room to haggle!! The shops at the mall and all the little shops in the courtyard will all haggle price with you. Do not pay their original asking price. Also for transportation to the hotel from the airport, it is cheaper and easier to book it through Barcelo while you are booking your room. On previous trips, we felt that the drinks have been watered down but on this trip for sure they were not. If you plan on going in the ocean, I recommend water shoes because you can walk forever in the water and be able to see and touch the bottom but there are rocks and stuff that hurt your feet. If you don’t have the water shoes. Overall, we absolutely love this resort and plan on going again. I also recommend watching some videos about the resort so you have an idea of what to expect. Try to find videos that are non-biased and kind of a Karen base approach. If you are a laid-back non-uptight person you’re gonna love this place just don’t expect it to be the four seasons because you’re not paying for the four seasons. Believe me from my experience this is one of the nicest resorts for the money you spend, and I believe it is a great deal.
