At 46 years old, I’ve been fortunate enough to travel extensively over the past 25 years. I do take time to write honest reviews as I also depend on other honest reviews for booking travel. This is my second trip back to Royalton Hicacos, and fourteenth trip to the lovely country of Cuba. Royalton was once a very decorated resort, and I did thoroughly enjoy my first trip to this place. However, after just returning today (Dec 07, 2024), I will certainly not return. A few positives before I tackle the negatives: -Many of the staff work very hard, and the butler service at building 10 was no exception. -Great beach to walk, not so great for swimming. -Landscaping throughout the property is very well kept. Ok, here goes: -Toilet paper issue remains. This should have been taken care of by now. It’s ok to import 350,000 tourists each year but not provide enough TP? I didn’t have issues with tissue when I was at another resort this past February. -Those friggin carts banging around before 7am is insane. There is a zero percent chance of not being woken up to banging carts strolling along uneven ceramic tiles every morning. If they simply changed the tires to air-filled, it’s would make a HUGE difference. -Thermostat in the rooms are pointless. Mine worked for the first two days, then never again. -Water pressure and temperature are brutal. If you want a warm shower at 7:30am, you better get up and crank the shower to hot at 7, and it still won’t be hot when you get in. -Alcohol here for regular members is terrible. By far some of the worst, bottom shelf stuff I’ve tasted. While I did purchase my own from a shop, people shouldn’t have to - considering this is supposed to be All Inclusive at a 5* Royalton. -Food is not good, but you’ll survive. I don’t suspect folks saying the food here is good actually have much travel expertise. -Beach was only open to swim 2/8 days. Nothing to see in the water. If you want to snorkel, take your gear (in a cab $) to the end of the peninsula and source out the large corals. -Hard to get served coffee in the mornings. I tip every time, every meal and every drink. It really doesn’t seem to help. -Bars are unorganized and there’s absolutely no ‘first come first serve’ mentality with the bartenders. If there’s a pretty girl wearing little clothing, she will get served ahead of all the fellas that are standing and waiting their turn. Kind’ve annoying. -Internet is the worst I’ve seen, as with cell service. The long usernames and passwords provided will need to be typed in 10+ times/day. It’s frustrating, especially if you’re on a call or FaceTime with your kids/spouse. You just lose signal, all day - every day and have to sign in with your information again. Think ‘default modems usernames/passwords’. -Rum, vodka, Tequila, mint, etc etc “runs out” constantly, even if the bar opened ten minutes prior. Very odd, especially when it can be purchased in shops. -Construction everywhere at the moment. Drills for concrete and tiles, angle grinders, hammers etc..all day. I wish I had known this before booking. There it is. Royalton is nowhere near 5* in my opinion. I’d say 3.5*, 4.5* when I last visited. Melia Marina, Iberostar Selection, Blau, I have stayed at (just to name a few) of similar resorts close by that I feel are leaps and bounds ahead in terms of services available and quality.
Royalton Hicacos is the Best Resort by Far in all of Cuba

I stayed at the Royalton Hicacos in Varadero Friday Nov 22 - 29 2024. I’ve been to the Royalton and other Blue Diamond Resorts several times with with my wife, family, or friends. The flight by Sunwing was great. As soon as I arrived at the lobby, I was shocked! I was greeted by massive hugs & huge smiles by everyone! They remembered me somehow at first sight! Juzia, Eileen, Nelly, Juan, Carlos, Marcia and all the muscle men who carry my bags treated me better than a brother. The room was perfect and clean, nothing wrong or broken. When I had small requests, they were IMMEDIATELY taken care of. I had breakfast the next day. Alberto, Sunvid, Leones and all the chefs all stopped their work and walked over to hug me! Too many names to remember! All Jardineros like Bryam etc all took time to talk to me and check if I needed anything. They even trimmed down a tree in front of my window! The waiters on the beach, pool & restaurants were all awesome, and some recognized me right away! Elleseer and Maria at the pool bar were so amazing! From the time I met both managers, John, & Pascal, you were never too busy to talk to me like a friend and take care of ALL of my needs. What perfect managers! I was alone this time, my wife is a nurse who had to work in a hospital Covid outbreak and isolate herself. But the wonderful staff and all the dozens of friendly guests made me feel surrounded by my own close friends and family. ?? Muchas gracias! Please keep doing what you’re doing. Hasta pronto! ??
