Great Vacation !! - and a “Very Good” Resort, much better than most !!

Let’s start with the SunWing Flight. There were no issues with both flights, other than upon arrival in Varadero - my suitcase was “ransacked”, and our personal items were stolen by the local baggage handlers. For those of you wondering what to bring to Cuba to leave behind as gifts; they stole all my toiletries – toothpaste, shaving cream, razors, deodorant, etc ….. My wife and I, along with our 2 adult sons recently stayed at the Malia Varadero for a week in late February. Check in / out was fast and efficient. The resort staffs are all very courteous, polite and helpful. We also felt very safe there – overall the resort is very scenic, quiet, and very relaxing. The front desk is always very helpful – and you can exchange your $$ there to Cuban CUC – and only exchange what amount you need, they may be phasing this tourist currency out. The hotel is a little older, but well taken care of. I'm almost sure the elevators (there are 3, & sometimes you will wait) -- have mind of their own, lol. The rooms are large, our room came with a firm king bed, the boys had twin beds. Both rooms had a balcony, bathroom, large closet, locking safe, good working A\C - everything worked fine, with only one minor problem. The main bathroom is a little tight, but the only issue was the shower (or lack of it, lol) – the bathtub faucet had enough pressure / water flow – but the shower wand / head was turned on, it was extremely slow – it took at least 20 to 30 minutes to shower. The main pool / pool area was very nice, you can easily spend a day relaxing there. The water is a little cool – but, you get used to it. The beach area is absolutely beautiful, but a bit rocky. The hotel has a bar hut with drinks and a BBQ restaurant there. Bring a good pair of sandals – the pool area and walkways are like ok being barefoot, but you will need them at the beach – there are rocks on the beach, and in the water. If you go further down the beach, there are fewer (if any) rocks. Overall, the food was pretty good, a decent selection of foods and “above average” for a Cuban Resort. The a la carte restaurants are good – I would recommend the “Tex Mex” and “International” restaurants - they had a good selection of items and beverages. The many bars also had a lot of good premium liquors. OK, you may read some complaints about the food, so I will remind you - you are not in Cuba for the food !! Bring big / large thermal mugs for drink refills, as they do use small plastic cups – that’ll save you a few trips, lol. I also brought my own stainless-steel straws. Unfortunately, to get a good set of chairs / loungers, at the beach / pool – you’ll have to mark your chairs early in the am. I hate this tactic, but if you can’t beat them – join them. Alternately, you will find open chairs - just not in the best locations. The nightly entertainment by the lobby bar is hit or miss - some of the live performers are really good, some not so much. The nightly shows - the singers / dancers are ok, but the caliber of the shows can only be described as a “Fromage Festival”, and some of these shows were amongst the worst I’ve ever seen. These shows are held in the hotel disco / bar area - so that’s out also. The shows need to be much better to be considered a 5 star. You’ll pay for certain things at this resort, that defeats the purpose of being an “all inclusive” – premium lounger locations by the pool, lobster restaurant ($14 CUC each), WiFi ($1 CUC per hour), etc…. Please note – there is NO free WiFi here. Our Sunwing package included Golf fees, at the Varadero Golf Course next door - its next to Xanadu Mansion, the large building at the end of the beach, that you see from the hotel. And you can walk to the course (10 to 15 min), or cab it. Ask at the front desk for your Golf Certificate, as this will cover your green fees ($100 CUC) – and about booking a tee time. We also rented clubs - TaylorMade M6’s ($33 CUC, and you can share a set) and rented carts ($33 CUC’s each). There is a hop on / off bus that goes to Varadero – a believe it’s $5.50 CUC per person per day – or taxi’s that you can take which about $10 CUC each way (and ensure you confirm your fare $$ before you get in). We took the Sunwing day tour to Havana - it was a great history lesson, and nice to see their capital city. The tour had taxi’s available for rent ($40 CUC) - to take you around the city – it was pretty cool !! Please note - SunWing will discount the Sunday tour, they just don’t tell you that most shops in Havana, are closed Sunday afternoons. Hope that helps, we were here as part of a SunWing Tour package, I would rate the resort as “Very Good” – and Yes, if I return to Cuba, I’d most likely come back here again.

It was my first time in Cuba and I loved it there! I would definitely come back! the resort is really beautiful and the staff is amazing. We stayed at The Level and it was absolutely worth it. Our room was really nice with a beautiful view! it was very clean too. The staff is very welcoming! The food is really good at the level's restaurants especially the Tex Mex. We really enjoyed our time there and it was honestly the best vacation! the entertainment is really good too with a lot of variety especially with Aldo Santa Maria as the host, he is super adorable, entertaining and amazing! I can't wait to visit Varadero again! Maria

March 5th to 19th , 2020 This was our 2nd time at this wonderful resort (my 7th time in Cuba, my wife's 8th.) Unlike a few other resorts we had attended for the 2nd time in the past, we found Melia Varadero to have remained very well maintained, as it was during our 1st time there last year. The entire place is kept immaculate and clean at all time, from the rooms, public washrooms, dining rooms to the outside grounds. We stayed at “The Level” once again and were still very pleased by the level of service and the kindness of all the employees. The view from our room (ocean view) was nothing short of spectacular. The food was excellent, with various choices of menus that should please anyone (I gained 7 pounds in 2 weeks...) A new addition from last year: a beautiful outside bar, extending from the Lobby bar. I have to take a moment and give credit where credit is due, by acknowledging the excellent work and friendliness of members of the staff we were very happy to see again this year (and my apologies to the ones I may have forgot to include here): At the Level's reception desk: Idania Alonso Talavera and Orlaida (only to name a few), who were a pleasure to deal with, once again. At the Level's bar: Our friends Hanoy and Luisito (among the very best bartenders I ever met – and I have met many!!), Abraham, who just worked his 1st shift in this bar (and who we had met last year in the Lobby bar). Arianna, working both the bar and sometimes the morning breakfast. Mayara Quintona, who anticipated all our needs during the breakfast period. At the beach, Level section: Humberto Reyes, as always, keeps the beach clean and sees you coming from a couple hundred yards away, making sure your chairs are ready by the time you get there. At the Tex-Mex restaurant: It was a pleasure to see Leonardo once again, a true gentleman, who always made the impossible to accommodate. At the International restaurant: Karina was pleasant and friendly as ever. At the buffet, we were pampered by our waiters: Julia Elena Tonely and Rigoberto Menendez. We were more than happy to see that the fish cook – René - was still there as well. There is a massage area as well as a hairdressing salon, 2 tennis courts and the golf course is right across the street. Scooters and bicycles are available for rent, on site and the beach offer the usual activities: sail boat quick tour, etc. Our room had a King size bed, which was very comfortable. Should anyone need to purchase anything, the hotel has a small shop, and the “Mall of America” is at a 4 to 5-minute walk away. Melia Varadero's website photos do represent how this resort really is, regarding all the amenities. To conclude, I can only say that we are hoping to be able to go back again next year, which will make it the first time we would stay at the same resort for a 3rd time!

    Melia Varadero - Third Time

This is the third time at this resort in four years and our 14th time in Cuba so we are well versed on the 'value' you get for your money, especially having to travel during March Break. We did the Level during our last two trips here. Positives: - hotel has made several nice upgrades over the last year to address a couple prior limitations: (1) a nice bar, lounge area outside to manage the congestion from the sole bar indoors (2) a well constructed large sitting area by the pool facing the ocean, with large umbrellas... which is also used in the evening for performances (3) new beach huts which provide more consistent shade - Level provides good value if you're into using the restaurant and their private lounge exclusively for breakfast & lunch instead of the buffet 2-3x per day - Concierge staff are outstanding - very pleasant, responsive and attentive - Humberto Reyes in Level beach area is a wonderful man - my teenage daughters commented after that he sets up the chairs he consciously turns away and goes about his business not making them feel uncomfortable... more than I can say for some others - beds were comfortable and rooms kept very clean - Japanese restaurant is a nice fun touch, especially for families with younger kids Areas that may not please all: - Beach: unfortunately, over the last year either the hurricanes or bad winter have eroded much of the sand exposing the rocks just in front of this resort. They have machined them a bit to make areas smooth but not much more they can do. What does this mean: (a) you have less beach width so it's a bit more congested when busy... which obviously wasn't a problem this trip (b) you need to walk 50m down the beach to swim without rocks. - Restaurants: Only three and the International Restaurant is ok at best. If you're into more restaurant choice, it will not satisfy. Overall, it serves its purpose. If you love a mature property with beautiful views and well kept grounds and can manage the few obstacles I mention, you should consider it.

Our stay was March 9-15.. when we first got to Cuba we we’re originally booked into another resort. After 12 hrs. We said we needed to be relocated b/c of how dirty and unacceptable the place was. .....long story short... we went to Melia Veradero on the Level package. Our stay was the best ever.. The welcoming staff to the lounge waiters. thank you for such a great experience As mentioned in several reviews the food is great the tex mex restaurant was awesome.. Beach staff especially Umberto.. was so attentive and helpful. Will definitely return!
