    Pandemic Woes, Spring Break Chaos or Both?

    In November of 2020 we stayed at the Mauna Kea and this April for our Spring Break we decided to stay at the Westin. We have stayed at Mauna Kea residences 3 other times and have always enjoyed our stay. While we enjoyed this visit overall, there were many things "off" about our stay. First, there were no dinner reservations to be had at the resort at a reasonable time, unless you made reservations OVER A WEEK before your stay. Since other resorts in the area were not allowing non guests to eat dinner at their resort during Spring Break, you really were out of luck to get dinner reservations. We got take out at the hotel beach restaurant and ate it on property, which was fine. Also, we have always been able to use Mauna Kea resources and vice versa when staying at either resort. This time, we were told we had to pay a $25 resort fee to use towels, sit on beach chairs, etc. at Mauna Kea!!! (Luckily, you could find beach personnel that didn't enforce). We were also told that we would be "turned away" from the Mauna Kea if we didn't have reservations for dinner. We went anyway and told them we were going for take out and were allowed access no problem. As others have said, there is no housekeeping in the rooms. We had to ask repeatedly for one during our stay. The resort was at 100% capacity and trash cans throughout the resort were often over-flowing. I would only consider returning if access to both resorts are granted without an additional fee, as has always been in the past. I am hoping this is just a pandemic Spring Break anomaly that will go away. I am unsure why some other recent poster said there is no ocean view from the rooms. There most certainly are.

    Improved resort with some shortfalls

    We just got returned from four days at Hapuna Beach and I believe this was our fourth stay. The grounds and rooms are all improved from the recent remodel. Rooms are very comfortable and the landscaping is beautiful and well maintained. Service at the restaurants was good even with the spring break crowds. The new gym is fantastic with squat racks and loads of great equipment. Westin Hapuna Management isn't offering daily maid service which is upsetting for the prices paid and the fact it's a resort and not an Airbnb. I don't enjoy making up my hotel room. I feel the management is using Covid as an excuse to cheap out on maid service and not provide guests the service we deserve. Also, pool and beach chairs were impossible to get unless you got up and 4 am and place stuff on them. The resort should police this more. We ended up having to lay on the grass with our young child. Overall, the wait staff, front desk, and so forth were friendly and worked hard. They could use some better housekeeping and resort policies to improve to a four or five-star resort.

    Shocked!! When opening the take-out salad from Meridia restaurant.

    We had an absolutely fabulous time at the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort. Our daily breakfasts at Ikena were great and the Banana Waffles are out of this world. We also enjoyed the lunches at poolside which was very convenient for our son who spent most of the time in the pool and at the beach. We had a very wonderful dinner the first night at Meridia restaurant and dined while watching a beautiful sunset. We had such a wonderful experience we decided to dine at Meridia on our last night as well. Unfortunately my dad was very tired on the last night and decided to rest in the room before our flight home, so the rest of the family went to enjoy dinner at Meridia and let dad rest. Just like the first night, our dinner at the restaurant was fantastic. We felt bad for dad as he did not have any dinner. Since mom really enjoyed the salad she that night, we ordered the same salad for him as a take out order so he could eat on the at the airport or on the plane. Well we were all tired and dad did not eat the salad, but we did manage to bring it back home in the nice take out container from the restaurant. We were Shocked when we saw the take out salad order. It literally looked like left over scraps!! There was not much in the container at all. Luckily dad did not have to see this as he decided not to eat at all. Our whole stay at the Westin Hapuna beach - the room, meals and service was excellent ... and this very disappointing incident with the Salad Take-out out. How in the world did this happen?? Our entire vacation was so great, so perfect, and then this one thing happens and this is what we will remember and most likely talk about while sharing our vacation experience at the Westin Hapuna Beach.

    What a joke. This property may have been great 50 years ago. They sold the beachfront property to another residence and now they have the spectacular view and location. This hotel needs to be torn down. They have NO ocean views. They have NO a connecting rooms. This hotel is a motel. DONT DONT DONT

    The title says it all really. Great property, even when full it seemed comfortable and open. The pool is nice and the beach, while public, is open and comfortable. The rooms are large and comfortable, typical Westin. No small feat as this is a property in transition. I was given due love as a platinum member with requested connecting rooms and greet views of the water and park area. Breakfast was a challenge with not enough wait and host staff for the volume. I must say it worked well when Ginger was working... she is the glue that holds the breakfast area together. On days she was off the place was chaotic and breakfast was never right. Front desk staff seemed lost about programs and gave no warning that you needed the little rubber bracelets to get towels at the beach.... or pool. The front desk tells you how the hotel is tied to the Mauna Kea Beach hotel next door but when we tried to attend programs there they said we couldn't... Little issues but they do matter. Over all, I recommend this property but make sure you get the front desk to spend more time with you. Also,,,,, breakfast is good, just know that no Ginger, no Service.
