A Lovely Business Stay in December

A Lovely Business Stay in December We are in San Francisco at least once per month for my wife’s corporate business meetings, and in December, were again staying at the Westin St Francis Hotel, on Powell Street, between Geary and Post Streets. I think that this was our third stay at this hotel, but only the second, after a major refurbishment of both the historical tower, and the new tower. To date, we have only stayed in the historical tower, facing Powell St. Being BonVoy Platinum members, we were upgraded, and assigned to Room 1034. The rooms in the historic tower were the first to be refurbished, and though that process was now about two years ago, the room was like new. One of our requests is always for a walk-in shower, as my wife has two artificial hips, so a combo tub-shower is a bit tricky for her to manage - doable, but not ideal. Room 1034 has a nice walk-in shower, so it suited us nicely. Apparently, there are not all that many walk-in showers, and especially in the historic tower, so very glad that our request could be honored. We had a very comfortable Westin “Heavenly” king bed, and though facing Powell St, and Union Square, being on the 10th floor proved to be very quiet. This room is down a small hallway, so felt almost separate from the other rooms on the 10th floor, and just around the corner from us. We heard zero noise from inside the hotel. We had a sitting area, just off of the bedroom space, and then an ample closet, just off of the bathroom. Though it had the requested walk-in shower, the bathroom itself, was a bit small, but adequate. We also had a small desk. We had two flat-screen TV’s, with one facing the sitting area, above the desk, and the other, on the opposite wall, facing the bed. Remember, this room is in the historical tower, so the scheme/floorplan goes back many decades. Still, this was truly a Jr Suite, and was nicely appointed, bright (three windows), and comfortable. We had a mini-fridge in a unit with three large drawers for clothing, plus a coffee maker, a Mr Coffee, which is not my favorite hotel coffee maker, and stocked coffee caddy with the Pike Place coffee We had a single thermostat, which functioned perfectly, as did the AC/heat. The heating/cooling was very quiet, which is not always the case in older hotels, even with a major refurbishment - job well done.. We had a horizontal safe, and plenty of AC & USB outlets, to charge our various devices - a nice touch for a business stay. I dislike the vertical safes, as tablets and iPads tend to fall out, when the safe is opened, and stacking those takes time, and a lot of patience. This safe was ample and easy to access. The closet, where the safe is located, also had an iron, ironing board, and two plush bathrobes. I the bathroom, we had a single sink in a vanity, with a shelf filled with very nice towels. Though there was a lack of horizontal space for storage of toiletries in the bathroom, with the proximity of the closet, we just used its large shelf, so things were not that far away. The shower head was good, as were both the water pressure and the amount of hot water, both in the morning, and evening. In California, I too often find the flow from the shower heads to be minimal, and one has to run around the shower to get wet. It was not so in this room. There was also a separate wand in the shower, besides the overhead shower - always a nice touch. Besides the limited horizontal space, and the single sink, one aspect of the bathroom, which is not ideal, is that the toilet is in the middle of the room. However, with a full frosted glass door, that did not prove to be an issue. However, I prefer a separate WC area, which this room did not have. There was a hair dryer in the bathroom, and my wife reported that it worked well. We also had full bath amenities, the White Tea & Aloe from the Westin Heavenly Spa collection. There was also a little spray bottle of lavender “pillow spray.” During this short business stay, we had few interactions with the staff, beyond initial check-in and check-out, but all were very pleasant, and it was nice that the reception staff recognized our BonVoy status, plus our request for a walk-in shower. Due to the short stay, we really did not avail ourselves of the on-property dining, the wine tasting opportunities, or even the location, as much as we normally would. With the location, just off of the Powell St Cable Car Line, and then Union Square, there is so very much, just steps away. In all, a very nice, albeit short business stay, in a great location.

Don't get me wrong, I understand this is SF, but in my opinion you should get what you pay for. I have stayed at MANY Westin in the past and they all have lived up to my expectation. But this one? Im not sure it does. So YES there's a Pandemic in place, and as an ER Nurse I totally understand the need to limit things. But in MY opinion, the price should reflect that. To be honest it feels like they are taking advantage of the pandemic as an excuse to not even try. THIS place is EXPENSIVE. At $250+ a night, I expect to have SOME kind of amenities, and this place has Nothing AT ALL. Even the things you think are included, cost A LOT. YOU WILL PAY $70/day JUST TO PARK! YOU WILL PAY for WIFI AND you'll even pay tourism tax of almost $40!!! (probably not their fault, but if their base rate should reflect this) MIND = BLOWN! NO Room Service NO Bellhop NO Microwave NO Bar NO Restaurants NO gym NO pool/hot tub NO Customer Service. EVEN the toiletries they give you are crap. DID I MENTION IT WILL COST $70 JUST TO PARK! Now, listen. I know I sound Boujie right now but please DONT get me wrong, I'm a country boy. I don't NEED any of these things. But if I'm paying 250+ a night, I expect SOMETHING. The staff literally stared at us and offered zero assistance as we are getting out of the car, and upon check out I called to ask for a cart for luggage and was told "its outside, you have to come get it." Never have I experienced such crap customer service. I used to be a Westin Fan, but NEVER AGAIN. =(

I am still waiting for a call or an apology from the manager te as i request this before my check out. No one assist us in nothing, i completely understand that under the circunstances , to travel is difficult now, but you should show emphaty. Help a guest with a taxi call, a taxi number if requested, provide the hotel number if need it, Help them to make a reservation request if your wifi is not working correctly,....We were always wearing the mask. But we witness how your staff at the front desk was rude when someone forget the mask, she apologies and out it inmediatly and still, nad words and actitude from your staff! I was also a victim of this. Also, when you receive some luggage and try to get it from the desk and the front desk simply give you faces , terrible faces....they did not even Wear the mask correctly and they were rude to people? They should always ask the guest politely. Is something that the best hotels do and the guest understand and apologies if they did something wrong,...but not you, your people were rude. Even the info that they provide about the restaurant has mystakes. Also no bellboy assistance, nosecurity asístance. I call them three times to get an answer about this complains and nothing, send them emails, send them the questiinary that they send for feedback, and nothing, no answer. This hotel do not care for their guest, visitors. Also their protocols are just ok, no carpet with desinfection at the entrance well locales, their sanitizacion stations were just fine. Of course they still charge us with more than 1000 dls. The wifi not working So you can not do the reservation , they say ok, we will do it for you, but the charge will be more. After more than 25 minutes waiting at night and begging the front desk staff lady to help us on this, provide a computer or something.....It was awful. At that moment we do not want to Fight about the Price. Is not about the money but you should not charge this amount when not only your services are not complete, but your staff was not ready to assist one guest traveling to your City. I am still waiting for someone to contact me. Terrible experience. The location ok but nothing to do at the moment, still is not about this, we understand the situation now but is how you han it, if you can not do it, then you should not be open. Period.

The nonprofit organization I work for had a Spring 2020 event scheduled at the Westin St. Francis that was quickly complicated by COVID-19. The events team was phenomenally professional, responsive, and attentive to our needs that arose out of this unique situation. I would highly recommend using them for future events - the customer service we received from this team was unparalleled.

    Classic San Francisco Hotel

I am a Marriott Bonvoy Titanium, and know Marriott's brands incredibly well. Westin is one of the brands that I trust, as they are generally consistent. This property is a classic. Originally built in 1904, the hotel added a more modern tower in the late 60s/early 70s. Due to the current pandemic, the original 1900s section is closed, unfortunately. But the open parts of the lobby still give a nice glimpse into the past. Upon arrival, I was disappointed by the lack of door staff - no one, not even a valet guy, said hi once during my 3 days. The receptionist, however, was welcoming and thanked me for my loyalty, I was placed on a high floor in the modern tower. Unfortunately, it seems they are placing guests into very few areas, as my hallway was noisy. Sound insulation in this hotel are poor. I could hear everything in the hallway and in the rooms next door, which made for a less relaxing stay. Times are different and there was no regular housekeeping, gym or normal food operations, as expected and as it should be. I have to say that this hotel is incredibly well-maintained. Common areas and rooms were immaculate, which I really appreciate in this weird time we are in. Hand sanitizer was readily available and everyone was wearing masks. My room was incredibly comfortable with the classic Heavenly bed, plentiful and comfortable bath linens and the signature Westin bath products. The location of this hotel can't be beat. It is right on Union Square and any area of the city is easily walkable. There are plenty of eating options - Little Italy is perfect for outdoor dining, shopping and pharmacies nearby. This is a great hotel especially if you don't have a car. Based on the noise and lack of greeting staff, I would normally give this hotel 3 stars, but this is an odd time in our world, and I'm not going to judge a hotel based off of minimal staff and such poor occupancy. I look forward to returning and hopefully trying a room in the original building.
