A great week away from home.

We really enjoyed this resort. The grounds were beautiful and you really did not feel like we were in the city. We had a sea view room with a balcony, lots of light and super clean. The staff was spectacular! They were friendly and made us feel like family, especially Sabino (front end) and Thomas (seafood à la carte)! Would highly recommend!

Not for a peaceful holiday, Food Blah!

My daughter and I are currently staying at the Occidental Tucancún and unfortunately still have another six days left of our holiday. Sadly, we are already counting the days until we can leave and enjoy some peace and quiet elsewhere. The food has been very disappointing. It is repetitive and rather boring, to the point that despite being on an all-inclusive package we have chosen to eat out so far in the evenings just to have some variety. Prior to coming to this hotel I contacted the hotel via Telephone and sent an email (to which I had no reply to, hence the phone call) as my daughter is Celiac, I was assured dining would not be an issue, this is completely wrong, dining for my daughter has been very limited, Rice chicken or fish, so if you have an autoimmune disease or have specific dietary requirements/restrictions this is not the best place for you. The atmosphere in the hotel is also far from relaxing. During the day there are often loud, noisy guests around the resort, the adult only pool has been full of loud brash drunk guests, in fairness the hotel security did move them to the party/activity/music pool, yesterday an intoxicated female decided to vomit on the floor 2 sunloungers away from us. Just what you like to see on a relaxing holiday. Several other guests were horrified, and have also commented on how loud the adult only pool area is. late at night there is frequent shouting and screaming in the corridors, whilst these aren’t the fault of the hotel, it’s seems anything goes here. If you are looking for a peaceful or restful holiday, this is not the place. The rooms themselves are very basic. The beds are comfortable enough to sleep on, but the bedding is old, worn and bobbling, with some sheets even ripped. Our sink does not have a plug, and leaks on the floor, this has been reported, the air conditioning is extremely noisy, and our room faces the street above the hotel’s air-conditioning fans, which are deafening throughout the day and night. The sea here is also quite rough, so it has not been ideal for relaxing swims. On a positive note, most of the staff we have encountered have been lovely and friendly, and they do their best. However, overall, based on our experience, I would not recommend this hotel — particularly if you are hoping for a relaxing, quiet holiday., if you like the party, drinking , playing bingo, and pool games then go for it, but it wasn’t for a chilled mother/daughter break. We have stayed in several Barcelo hotels prior to this, this is by far the worst we have ever stayed in.
Average experience

We did not expect a “wow” effect — overall everything was quite consistent with the price. The rooms are a bit outdated, but they have a beautiful view. The cleaning could be improved. The staff everywhere were very friendly, which added to the festive atmosphere. The food was quite standard, without any delicacies, but we were not expecting that either. In general, we have no complaints about the room, the food, or the staff. Our main complaint was that we could never find available loungers, especially in the shade. People reserve them for the entire day simply by leaving a towel on them. By the end of the day, they don’t even return to pick up the towel, which means the lounger stayed empty all day. This was very frustrating.
For the price you cant beat it

For all you can eat and drink for four nights, you can't beat the price we paid per person. The buffet food isn't the best, but you can get eggs made to order for breakfast and burgers for lunch, which makes up for some of it. There aren't enough beach chairs to go around for all their guests, so if you don't get up early, you won't get a chair until the sun hides behind the hotel. Also, go to the mall across the street for sunscreen, aloe, souvenirs, and beach toys, it's much cheaper there than the shops in the hotel. There's also a supermarket upstairs in the mall, so you can get your own snacks.
