Secrets is not a good experience

Upon arrival they tried to sell us the preferred package (which we thought we already had). We got to the room and found outdated furniture and mismatched coffee cups and glasses. The coffee table had apparent water damage. The bathtub was nasty as well. Half of the lights were not working. The safe would not work so the maintenance guy came and said he had other work to do and would be back in an hour…..24 hours later he finally showed up to replace the safe. The shower was inconsistent between cold and lukewarm water. We had to call nightly for washcloths and towels because none were left. Housekeeping hours ranged between 9am to 5:30. Never consistent. The outside of the building had black mold as well as the tiles on the swim up rooms. The beds outside on the patio were split showing the inside of the mattress. Those sheets were never changed all week. The air conditioning went off several times warranting another all to the front desk (if you could get them to answer). Our keys were turned off on Wednesday. I took them to the desk to inquire as to why. He asked my room number and swiped the door cards and handed them back to me, no “ I’m so sorry” or anything. Pools were dipped out late in the morning while people were in the pool but I never saw it being vacuumed. Since we were not “preferred” guests we had to dine in the Market Cafe. Unless you ordered an omelette or cooked on the grill you did not get hot food. The food was cold coming out of the chafers. Never any bacon, only link sausage. There was ham one day, but no knife provided to cut it so you had to struggle using the tongs to cut it. You had waffles one day or pancakes. No use serving butter in there because there is nothing hot to melt it. The pancakes were cold and burned!! In my house that mess gets thrown away! The pool attendants and the coffee shop girl did provide good service. We did not pay extra money for the “preferred” package thank goodness because the food was unfit for human consumption. We couldn’t wait until evening to go to town to get a decent meal. This was our first and last time to Secrets “resort”. Shame on you Hyatt for providing such a nasty place for the price you charge!

We've been here 4 times now. Location is great and you can snorkel right off the beach and actually see fish. The hotel itself is hit or miss. Sometimes everything goes right, and other times, not so good. We've always found the wait staff friendly and outgoing. The managers though, have been less than professional. They've never heard the expression, "the customer's always right," and their attitude shows they have no interest in giving "guest" their money's worth. There are always repairs needed somewhere, and it's getting older so putting some fresh paint on would go a long way. In fairness, it's tough all over to find and hire good people who want to put in a good days work. We tip everyone so not a problem, but I've seen the looks on faces and the whispers when someone doesn't. Make sure you ask for top-shelf booze by name, or they'll give you the watered down (or maybe just weak) local stuff. We like to drink gin & tonics, and we'd be plastered if we drank more than 4 or 5 back home. Something funny about that. Same with the dinner wines. The house brands are actually not bad tasting, but they don't have a kick, which is okay too if you don't want to sleep until noon the next day. We've traveled all over Mexico over a dozen times and the best trips/best resorts are always the ones where the staff treats you like long-lost best friends. Secrets-Aura gave us that about 50% percent of the time. The one thing that stands out to us, over the last 9 or 10 years, or since the resort was purchased by Secrets; the complaints have been the same ones over and over. You'd think they would address those issues to turn things around. Secrets-Aura is advertised and rated as a premium resort, and that just simply isn't the case.
