Barcelo PV has some lovely features...and some big problems. First the good: The rooms are big, lovely, and clean, The staff are (mostly) nice, friendly, and concientious. The concierge was a huge help in finding tours and helping us with reservations. The bad? The food and drink and service in the restaurants. Seriously. The free buffet is okay for breakfast (breakfast foods are easy to do on a large scale), but for lunch and dinner? Mostly inedible. The specialty premium restaurants aren't much better. The food is very much a disappointment, and the house wines are undrinkable. What really astonished me was the low level of service. We tried to buy a bottle of wine at the Italian specialty restaurant (because the house wines are so bad). It wasn't available. We tried a different one. It wasn't available either. They brought out a bottle that was available, but the cost was 50% higher -- an attempted up-sell that left a bad taste in my mouth. When we finally did get wine, we had already finished our appetizers. They seem never to have heard of bringing out everyone's food at the same time. That might have been a limitation of the kitchen, but we were just a party of 3. It's awkward when one person gets their entree while someone else is still waiting on their appetizer. And it's just not very good. I was looking forward to a fried garlic, tomato, bread soup, but it tasted like someone had simply opened a can of Campbell's and added a bunch of salt. At the premium restaurants, there's 50/50 chance they'll get your order right. And for larger parties there absolutely will be a mistake somewhere; you can stimulate dinner conversation by trying to guess what it will be. And the drinks. I've already mentioned the house wines. The margaritas clearly have no triple sec (which means they're not margaritas!). The cocktails in general are weak, but they're free, so you can just ask for a shot of liquor to add to your cocktail to bring it up to regular strength. We chose the place because we were bringing 15 people together from two families (my family and my husbands), and we didn't want to have to worry about cooking or finding restaurants to accommodate a big group every night, especially with kids in the mix. An all-inclusive resort seemed the logical choice. But it's unpleasant to invite people to fly thousands of miles to get meals you'd be embarrassed to serve to friends in your home. It's a shame really. The facilities are quite nice. If they could give the food service staff the same 15-minute training I got back when I was a banquet waiter decades ago, that would boost the quality of the resort. And if they would just buy higher ingredients and made some adjustments to the menu (cream cheese in EVERY item at the sushi restaurant? really?) the resort could really be something. Unfortunately, I can't recommend it.

    Stop overbooking!

This resort has many issues, many that can be easily corrected if management takes notice. First, stop raising people’s expectations by saying the “suites” have early check-in “when available”, then going so far as to ask what your projected arrival time is. This leaves a person to believe that a room will either be ready upon arrival or made available shortly after arriving. Also, educate your staff as to what YOUR website states, that way your “premium” clerk does not, in essence, call your clients a liar and say “no, check in is at 3, show me where it says otherwise”. Also, why even have a “premium” check-in area, that leaves your guests standing around for 15 minutes, while your one employee is taking dinner reservations? Then, when a room was finally available the clerk did not call a bellhop to have me escorted, but just told me it was on the 7th floor…which leads to the next problem. Stop overbooking rooms! I paid half on YOUR website for a “grand master suite”. I was charged the other half for the “grand master” suite upon arrival, then placed in a master suite. It was obvious it was not the room I had booked when I entered. The grand master is approximately 2239 sq ft and the master suite is about 1464 sq ft. So back down to the desk I go. Here they tried to convince me I was in a grand master suite. This went on for a bit, then she continued to tell me there was no difference in the two suites other than a dining room table. I stated that the master is much smaller than the grand and all I ever got was, “Oh, no, they are about the same size.” This went on for over 30 minutes to find out there were NO grand master suites available. Really? You did charge me for one! I was assured that I would be refunded the difference, but it took days to get that accomplished and then I have not credited the correct amount or the tax I was charged. So, you all still owe me over 100.00 US Dollars (124.18 to be exact). I will also point out during the process of attempting to get my credit, a front desk staff member actually took out her personal cell phone and was taking photos of my credit card, front and back. I do not think she had in ill-will doing this, but this should never happen! When attending the rooms, there is an amazing whirlpool tub, which I use! Guess what? All the toiletries are in the shower! I spent days, using a glass to put shampoo and conditioner. Not once was I ever left any bottles of these items, even though it was obvious I was using the tub and glass containers. The shower receptacles were not refilled regularly and actually went the first 5 days not being refilled at all. On day 4 the conditioner was completely empty and I ended up purchasing my own products to use. The hotel itself is beautiful and situated in a gorgeous area. You have the potential of having an amazing place here if you would stop playing games with your guests and do something about the food. The buffet is terrible, gave up after a couple of nights and have gone out to eat since (The first night at the buffet, no one ever even offered to fill my glass with water…etc, the 2nd night, different waiter, was very nice and attentive). The room service menu is definitely lacking of choices, but the breakfast omelet has been very good. The staff working around the resort is hit and miss. Some are amazing, like the bell staff…can’t say enough good things about them! The pool area staff are 5 stars! Lucy (hope I got her name right) with the concierge always has a smile and a pleasant greeting. The food and beverage manager always has a kind word and I enjoy running into him each day. The young man who fills my fridge is also very nice and makes sure you are taken care of.

This resort and area was well worth the money. Loved the Deluxe Suite for 4 people! Resort was very clean, food was good, not too busy, had all the appropriate amenities. Want to give a shout out to Cesar Lopez who was a waiter in the Buffet. He was amazing and very attentive. We accessed the water boats infront of the resort to take us to the Los Arcos for snorkelling. Ask for Chava Javier, very nice and helpful fellow. The only downside was the entertainment - we have seen better. All in all ... great holiday, would come back to the resort.

We had a girls trip and I was so happy with this resort. The staff were great, the food was good, and the view and pools were amazing. The place is clean. I will be going back. It's about 20 min from downtown but so worth it.

A wonderful resort in a perfect setting, a short cab or bus ride from old town or to the botannical garden. The ameneties included 3 pools, a kiddy pool and 2 spas. Area and grounds very well kept and clean. Great entertainment staff with Ricky, Candela, Dayonne, Brenda. Luis and Kate. Fabulous buffett with excellent staff, just ask for anything you don't see. Special thanks to Patricia, Norma, Carlos Ruiz and Alexander Rodriguez. Rooms were huge and comfortable, very clean, great balconies. Superb service from the moment we arrived, thank you Adriana at reception and front desk. Almost forgot to mention 4 great themed restaurants. Did I mention the beach right in front! Loved it all!.
