There was nothing to do at the hotel especially when it rained. Entertainment was on for fixed time and then everything closed at 9 or 10 pm. No encores. All shows were the same, dance groups.accommodation was a tip, very poor quality. Shabby, but clean. Food had no meatballs but just pasta .. only the main restaurant had more choice but at fixed times , the beach restaurant supposed to have meatballs but they never had any. Delivered us just pasta after an hours wait. the place was empty. Very rude staff, and uncaring. Water was not bottled, it was refilled bottles from the tap.. drinks queues for watered down drinks was ridiculous. Sailing, I have all my certifications from RYA to tidal skipper but was not allowed to take boats out or take the helm.. had to be taken out on them by the hotel staff. All recreation stopped if it rained. Miles from anything to do so had to use expensive taxis. Staff were grumpy and rude. I would never recommend this hotel. We also stayed with locals for two weeks in other areas of the island in air bnb.. highly recommended. Delightful people. There are lots more photos of the poor quality place but only able to upload 10! The hotel towels.. I was taking this picture and the maid snatched the towel away, then produced a tidy towel .. and moaned at me. The chairs on the balcony were falling apart. The lights in our room hung off the walls and didn’t work. The mirrors were all unclear, the place should be torn down and rebuilt. I know it’s Cuba, but they could have put on entertainment that made up for the poor quality place. If in Spain it would have been a 2 star, at least in Spain the staff are friendly, and have great entertainment. Shame, this place spoilt our Cuban experience. The rest of the island was wonderful.

We were at OVelP from Feb. 23rd to March 8th - yes, readers, this was our 12th visit. Firstly, I must compliment the General Manager, Juan Antonio for the wonderful improvements that were made in the Priviledge (Adults only) section of the hotel. New patio furniture, a Privilege beach and the breakfast /bar/lounge area. The staff at the Privilege Check-in were waiting for us upon our arrival. Yadira and Blanca are amazing and the right people as they handle customer inquiries, can make reservations for guests amoung their other duties. They are led by a great Public Relations Manager - Mayelin Sanchez and her Assistant PR Manager - Yanet Soto. These 4 ladies go above and beyond for all guests at the hotel and have been there since the opening of the hotel 7 years ago. Also reporting to Ms. Sanchez are the 2 Butlers - Zuri and Yandy and the 2 concierges Roxann and a new lady (can't remember her name). These 4 do an outstanding job and go well beyond their job descriptions to ensure that the clients are well looked after. The Privilege Lounge/bar has the same staff now as when the hotel opened. Anely the Bar Manager, Amelia the Asst. bar mgr. and the entire staff like Pedro, Fidel, to name just a few plus the 2 wonderful chefs and the ladies that assist them - they work in very small quarters and put out great meals. The Privilege Pool staff of Damarys and Jacqueline are great and certainly put out some great drinks. If they don't have what you want (the bar selection is premium brand drinks) they will get it from one of the many other bars within the resort. The room service was also great the servers were Adriel and Alexandro who worked from 7 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. for the entire hotel. The bellboys Ivan, Danay and Irving were always there to offer rides to the lobby, or to the room and were very pleasant and happy to serve the clients. The Beach Restaurant had an amazing Cuban day themed lunch every Wednesday and our servers were Yanuary and Adi - great service ladies. Yalimi and the Beach Bar staff were kept busy non stop and always had a smile on their faces. Although we didn't eat in at the snack bar we had many a snack delivered to the Privilege pool and the food was always great. The a la carte restaurants have been maintained by the same extremely pleasant staff since day one. Sandra and here staff at the Italian Restaurant were great and always smiling. Anita and here staff at the Asian were also great and smiling always. Luis and his staff at the Gourmet restaurant were also great and always smiling. It is pretty amazing to go into any of these restaurants and they remember what kind of wine you like or your favourite dish on the menu even after a year has passed. The entertainment in the lobby each night was great as were the bands in the Piano Bar. I can't say enough about the Lobby Bar and Piano Bar staff - they were all great- keep smiling Hanay and Leydis We didn't go the Buffet to eat but several people we met did go and said that they never had a bad meal and the variety was exceptional. The Front Desk Manager - Mabel also has an exceptional (and very patient) staff my compliments to all of them. From the mini water ballet at the Privilege Pool which was excellent to the floor shows in the evening all were very good. The Entertainment Team certainly do a great job of keeping the guests busy and the beach or around the big pool as well as starring in the floor shows in the evening. Last but not least our maid Masleydis who kept our room very clean and stocked and to the never ending hard working gardeners for their amazing work on the gardens throughout the resort. I must be honest, there were some shortages from time to time but not through any fault of the hotel as ALL HOTELS were experiencing shortages and after all, you are in Cuba not Miami or New York. There were certainly more times than not that the staff made up with something just as acceptable or better. We do understand that H10 Hotels which run the Ocean Hotels in Cuba have pulled out of all their properties and we can only hope that whichever Company (rumour is that Valentin Hotels) will keep all the current staff that we have come to love and consider our Cuban family and that they will keep our Cuban family united as their staff. I'm sure I have missed some people and I do apologize. It always amazes us that we are always recognized by all the staff that we meet during our stay, they all seem to know who we are even though we may not always know who they are by name. We love you all at El Patriarca and hope to see you again when it is possible to travel safely again. Stay safe and HASTA PRONTO! MUCHAS BESITOS Campanita and Ricardo

Just announced today that this wonderful hotel is closing :( I will miss it and hope that a new owner is taking over (and that they will make it even better!) I hope all the staff will be well taken care of. Check out their Facebook page for more info.

Beautiful beaches , clean rooms but no hot water for showers and problem with cooking meals

Great room except no hot water. Occasionally warm but usually cool. Beach was great and pool was fine. Breakfast was great with fresh fruit and omelettes daily. Crepes and waffles only occasionally. Dinner more difficult as the beef was horrible at the Italian restaurant. And no wine!? I had fresh fish most nights but it was often not cooked enough. The last night my fish was underdone but I had eaten it like that most of the week but it must have been bad because I was violently sick the whole following day. For that reason I’m not sure I could recommend!

My wife and I were here for seven days in March. We have been to Cuba on multiple occasions and understand there are concessions to be made. In the case of this hotel the standards are much lower than expected. Hotel staff who deal directly with customers, other than the front desk, work at their own leisure. It is difficult to get their attention and to get service, specifically in the coffee shop. I normally tip generously but limited my tipping after I saw no improvement in service. On a bright side, staff who do not deal directly with customers, such as gardeners, were extremely friendly. The entertainment staff at the beach and pool were high energy and very entertaining. Evening bar entertainment, scheduled for each night was only available two of the seven days we were there. Mosquitoes and bugs were horrible. Obviously there is no insect control. We had to close a blanket into our room door to seal it from mosquitoes at night. We learned this the hard way after the first evening. Other problems we faced were: No hot water to take a shower on some days. On other days, hot water was only available late in the day. Most places were not cleaned, including room floors and bathrooms and near the pool. The pool was washed once during the seven days of our visit. The food was well below what I would expect, even for Cuba. There was little difference in the limited food choices for every meal. Lunch and dinner options were the same every single day. Do yourself a favour. Avoid going here. I find that when we select a resort in Cuba, we normally only go to resorts where we know someone who has already been there. Someone is less likely to give a favourable review if you are acquainted with them and they know you are going to that same resort. In this case we did not do that.
